Duluth hockey fans warned after racist chants

Re: Duluth hockey fans warned after racist chants

Well, it's the same concept. A people who have been reduced to a nickname. And the Irish were treated very badly here back in the day.

I'm making sure that anyone defending the "no nickname, no chants" thought will stay consistent if someone chants that at the Irish.
The Irish have recovered, many Native Americans are still struggling with poverty and many other issues. That is where I see a difference.

Re: Duluth hockey fans warned after racist chants

The real problem here is that potato has three syllables. It just doesn't work well in a chant. Drunken Micks would work though.

Oh, so now things are all better with the Irish, we can ignore stereotypes? And history? Ok. Gotcha. The "no nickname, no chant" is so ludicrous, I honestly can't even believe RWD even tried to pass it as a legit reason for the chants.

Re: Duluth hockey fans warned after racist chants

Old Pio, just as I don't bye your evidence that smallpox blankets were not used, I know that you won't bye the evidence that they did, so I won't bother searching the interwebs for the abundance of documentation that exists. However, idiot that Ward Churchill was (and I assure you that I agree that he was), those rumors predate him by quite a few decades (as someone has already proven) so it certainly was not started by Churchill. I know quite a few people who have actually studied this issue, including one who has a PhD in the subject, who assure me that plenty of documentation exists. It wasn't really any of the Sioux tribes, the army just did their best to starve them and kill them off in other ways, but they did use the smallpox blankets on some other groups.

In any case, I will say this. The chant isn't funny. There are VERY few things that I can't find a way to make a joke out of, but genocide is one of them. I wish that the few people who use that chant, and others that make light of the United States attempted genocide would stop. As an American, that particular episode in our history does not make me proud. Neither does making a joke of it.

It's so much more fun to believe this myth, isn't it? Fits right in with your view of "whitey," doesn't it? There is no "evidence" the story is true. Let alone an "abundance" of evidence. What there is is discredited lying by a fired liar. Believe what you wish, but please dont imply there's a legitimate academic disagreement here. There isn't. It never happened. And your PhD pal is wrong. Rumors are generally not the standard in discussing history. Facts are inconvenient things. Churchill, and anyone who agrees with him on this matter, is not a historian, but a polemicist. Big difference.

And if the government of the United States was engaged in "genocide" against the Indians, we did a pretty p*ss poor job of it.

Of course not, silly.

86,000 posts! Way to go (I guess).

That's what you're saying though. It's okay to chant "Drunken Micks" at a hockey game because the Irish no longer have the same problems that many Indians have. Ridiculous.

Re: Duluth hockey fans warned after racist chants

DULUTH, Minn. - Students who own season tickets to Minnesota-Duluth's men's hockey games are being warned to shape up after reports of racist chants during recent games against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

Athletic Director Bob Nielson sent students a letter warning that inappropriate comments directed at officials or other teams could get them tossed from the arena, or cost them their tickets.

It's funny to see others schools trying to replicate (unsuccessfully) the atmosphere that is Yost...

For the most part, Yost isn't racist. In fact, whenever Scooter Vaughn received a penalty the entire student section would chant and point to the referree calling him a racist.

No one I know puts any stock whatsoever in Ward Churchill. And yes, your myth probably is much more fun to believe in. And for the record, you can stop right away if you think you have any clue what my view of "whitey" is. You don't. Let it go.

It's amazing to me that anyone would question the attempt at genocide.

I find Twitter to be a little more civil. And in regard to "intent", if you read THIS you'll find the "intent" I was referring to.

The British considered "intentionally" using blankets infected with small pox to kill Native Americans. That would have been genocide, and is what I was referring to.

Excerpt:

Dear Philip:

A common reaction to this story is that it has to be folklore. Giving infected blankets to the Indians--why, that's awful! That's disgusting! That's ... ethnic cleansing. Hmm. Maybe this story bears a closer look. Fact is, on at least one occasion a high-ranking European considered infecting the Indians with smallpox as a tactic of war.

So now you're retreating to "one occasion" and "one high ranking European" who allegedly "considered" this tactic. Well, if that isn't "proof" that the United States Army did it on the occasion claimed, what is?

so I guess when UMD fans commit a mob lynching, they'll just say "if he wasn't black, we wouldn't have done that".

UMD fans are disgusting. I hope you all die.

***k you all.

I thought you said you were going back to hiding? So why'd you post again?

Speaking of Scooter Vaughn, Skeeter was a totally lame character. Muppet Babies was an awesome show but Skeeter was just plain dumb. Animal or Gonzo is probably my favorite.

Man, it's going to suck in a couple hundred years and mnstateofhockey's descendant points to the US Army's plans for the invasion of Canada as proof that we hated their guts ever since they beat us in the 2010 Olympics and always planned on occupying them.

After all, those plans were discussed by high ranking Americans.

Sorry, but I fail to see the attempt at logic in your post...
