Speaking of ignorance.

Upon learning that I have a daughter who has lived in Istanbul for the past two years, a mother-of-three, extremely religious acquaintance of mine recently asked if I was worried about her safety, saying "there are a lot of muslims there, aren't there?"

Quite a few, yes. I told her I was probably at a higher risk of death or injury driving on those beautiful, hilly roads of southwest Wisconsin. She indulged me with a tolerating smile.

I'm sure that woman was out of touch. But your daughter should be a bit careful. I put myself at some risk and found myself in significant danger while there. I believe it had nothing to do with Islam...but rather a bit more lawlessness. From what I can tell, I just wouldn't take too many undue risks...but I'm sure its generally a safe place.

The great irony is in the rest of the world when you mention Americans it conjures up images of idiots running around shooting each other. :p

I think I recall that story being told here, though I didn't connect it with you, 5mn. That was a scary situation, if I've got the right story.
