Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

Well avoid the clap, numbnuts.

That's good advice. Amazing, you're too stupid or pompous or ignorant to recognize the quote, and it's all my fault for using proper punctuation. Got it.

Sorry I didn't remember a quote from the first half hour of a movie from almost 20 years ago made by a minor character. I'll be sure to memorize all movies the next time you quiz me.

Moron.

This guy is going to get a good performance review.

In the chaotic seconds after the shooting erupted Saturday, a University of Arizona student who had just begun an internship in Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' office sprang into action.

Daniel Hernandez, 20, had trained as a certified nurse's assistant, and many credit his quick actions with saving the congresswoman's life when she was shot in the head.

I think there's a pretty important distinction to be made when someone says this was politically motivated. Undoubtedly, she was targeted because of the office she held. However, I don't think it anything to do with the positions she held in that office.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

The shooting was motivated by insanity.

He was a communist. A lefty moonbat.

But I won't take the bait and claim this was politically motivated.

I heard from the right media that he was a leftist anarchist. Now he's a communist? Aren't those quite a ways apart on the spectrum?

In the alternative, why don't you try making an adult contribution to this thread, as nearly everyone else has. I realize busting my chops is obviously right up there with tug jobs in your world, but we've had an unspeakable event here and evidently the best you can do is make excuses for not recognizing a movie quote. "Minor character," "20 years ago" "First half hour," etc. Surely you can do better. Or perhaps not.

One wonders if this sick extremist watched the movie Machete, which involved shootings of Arizona politicans.

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

That it's Sarah Palin's fault and she should be put on trial, too.

No, this guy is clearly a nutjob and it wasn't Palin's fault. People may blame it on the tone of the debate but I'm not buying that either. Until someone from the left or right does this very thing where it is clearly politically motivated we are not likely to change our discourse. We always wait until there's a crisis first.

Its coming out down here that they have found stuff in his apartment where he has attended her events in the past, and had stuff about her and her politically rallys in his apartment. Maybe he just hated her...but seems politics are involved.

Again though, I don't think anyone is disputing that he went after her because she was a politician, but that's a huge leap from being motivated by her individual positions, right?

I've heard he hated GOV'MENT! Hated W. Hated it all.

Of course, also that he is insane!!!!!

He's insane. Even if he shot her because she's a Democrat it still amounts to absolute zero. The guys three fries short of a happy meal.

In a perfect world, all of the people calling for "toning down the rhetoric" would include all the rhetoric, not just the words from the right. Unless and until they do that, these. faux concerns can be dismissed as trying to take political advantage of six dead people. Never mind the fact that there's no evidence Loughner was influenced by any mainstream politician to do anything. I think it's a fool's errand to suggest his motive may have been political. Using ordinary terms to describe this extraordinary event is, IMO, a waste of time.

Could Mark Chapman be described as a "rock fan?" Well, the first time he met John Lennon he asked for and got an autograph. Later that same eveing, Chapman murdered Lennon. "Rock fan?" "Lennon fan?" Those words simply didn't apply. And ordinary descriptive terms don't apply to a deeply disturbed spree killer, either.

Then let's tone down all the rhetoric. Regardless of where one stands on theories of equivalency, the solution in all cases is for everyone to be more respectful and less incendiary.

Much of the blame for this kind of bs is the media which continues to fomet anger or conflict and emotional response (vs. logic). Fox continues to lead the way on this. Its goal is not to actually uncover the shooters true motivations...but rather Its headline reads the 'left rushes to spin act of madman into blame gain'. It converts a story where there could be some learnings and progress into a story where its pure goal is to extend anger on the left. And some call these guys news...

The sad thing is that in the end...from what I can tell his motivations were in fact racist...Loughner said:

"My hope is for you to be literate. If you're literate in English grammar then you comprehend English grammar. The majority of people who reside in District 8 are illiterate. Hilarious."

And in a final statement on myspace he said:

"Goodbye friends. Please don't be mad at me. The literacy rate is below 5%. I haven't talked to one person who is literate. I want to make it out alive. The longest war in the history of the United States. Goodbye. I'm saddened with the current currency and job employment. I had a bully at school. Thank you. P.S. --plead the fifth!"

Re: Arizona Congressman Gabrielle Giffords Apparantly Survives Assassination Attempt

What are we on now? The backlash against the backlash against the rush to judgement? This is silly. There isn't something we should have done to prevent this. Some lefty sources are even rejecting the "Palin's orders" argument:
Slate: Congress can't legislate civility
Mother Jones: The guy wasn't political, just crazy.
Tierney notes that Loughner did not display any specific political or ideological bent: "It wasn't like he was in a certain party or went to rallies...It's not like he'd go on political rants." But Loughner did, according to Tierney, believe that government is "****ing us over."
