Hopefully a tragedy like this will bring people together as people rather than exacerbate our existing (and, when measured against something like this, trivial) differences as self-appointed pundits. My wife knows several of the people who work with and/or personally know either Giffords or her fellow victim staffer. My prayers (deist as they are) go out to the injured and also those people whose lives have been smashed by this. It is simply a sad, sad day.

I really think that the point that people are trying to get across is incidents like Kelly's Fundraisers, Palins gun cross hairs on senate candidates, Glen Beck in general, the use of gun/shooting references to taking out political candidates is getting out of hand. I'm sure the democrats are just as guilty of these tactics as the republicans. I never said that I felt that it was Kelly's fault that this stuff went down yesterday, or Palins. But even subliminally those messages are being put across to people.

After writing it I almost feel like i shouldn't post it...because it comes of as disparaging into the deaths yesterday...which I don't mean to do. Of course I don't believe any of this to be true...just f-ing with old pio.

In the predawn hours of Nov. 2, Glen Beck snuck into the nutjobs apartment and put a device in his coffee maker that would inject small amounts of mind altering drugs into in his coffee. God then sent his Earthly messenger, Sarah Palin, to talk to the nutjob about the roll God needed him to play in his bigger plan of republican/white supremacy in America. Sarah would then send out pamphlets to Tucson with this congressman's face in cross hairs to let the kid know who the target was. Earlier in the year, Palin and Beck had asked Mr. Kelly to have his M16 gun shooting spree to help identify people in the Tucson area with good shooting skills. Yesterday morning god spoke to the nutjob and told him it was time.

I doubt I would have voted for Kelly, either. Manchin, I'm not so sure about. Nevertheless, attempting to connect Kelly to what happened yesterday is profoundly unfair. I used to read Andrew Sullivan a lot, but not for several years. And his clumsy, mean spirited effortrs to connect Kelly to this shooting illustrate why I've stopped. There should be some limit here, but there evidently isn't. We get lectured about "hate" yet a guy like Sullivan can smear a dude like Kelly with impunity and some folks will not their heads and say "makes sense to me." Jared Loughner is responsible for what happened yesterday, no one else.

The father of the little girl just did an interview on Fox. Mein Gott. In our rush to get to our default positions, we run the risk of losing sight of what happened yesterday. I've lived through too many of these, yet my reaction is always the same: anger, sadness, revulsion. If there's more to this incident than we know now, it will come out in the fullness of time. Sadly, the overly confrontational nature of our politics these days leads some of us to jump to unjustified conclusions. By all accounts, Ms Giffords is a nice person, doing her best to seve her constituents. And even if she weren't, that's hardly a justification for what happened outside that Safeway.

I agree with you that there are a few things he seems lose his head over. It should be enough on this issue to recommend people rededicate themselves to being respectful even in complete disagreement. He's been going on for months (years?) about who's the "real" mother and father of the handicapped Palin baby. This is important, why? As I say, I used to read him all the time. Not so much these days.

I simply can't watch that. I have my own little girl (not so little anymore) who I left at college for the first time this weekend. We watched the news together and I just hugged her for a long, long time afterwards.

We impose political overtones on everything -- it's the nature of life philosophies that nothing is really "inapplicable"to them. But even if we think we're absolutely sure of some political connection to these events, using them as illustrations seems to be a sort of desecration. For every 9/11 or Columbine there are people enduring limitless pain. That pain should make us silent, at least for a little while.

Trying to explain the motives for a profoundly disturbed person is usually a fool's errand. We crave answers. There "must" be an explanation for what this guy did. Well, maybe. Remember, John Hinckley wanted to kill President Reagan to impress Jodie Foster!

And those of you unhappy with the tenor of political discourse in this country seem to have a limited view of what's innapropriate. Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Kelly et al are "bad," Olbermann, Maddow, Al Sharpton et al don't show up on the radar. We had about 8 years of calls for President Bush's execution, assassination and death by other means. No one posting here whose panties are in a wad over conservative excesses have mentioned that stufff. Why?
