2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

As a FYI, the pairwise updates in "real-time" as scores get put into USCHO's system.

So generally by Saturday night at 11pm/midnight or so you'll be able to see the latest up to date information.

Unless they put in a result wrong... happened on the women's side this weekend!

Does Plattsburgh need to get to the SUNYAC championship game to get in? Or are they now first out?
Oswego '88

If all the favorites won their conference tournament, Plattsburgh would get the second of four at-large bids.

With that being said, 8-14 or 15 are VERY close and every result over the next three weeks could impact those placings. Plattsburgh making their conference final would surely be in their best interest given how close it all is and with the inevitability that one or two favorites won't win their conference tournament.

The MIAC standings (and I'm sure a couple others) should look different after next weekend. Bethel is the best team I've seen in that conference this season.

Happy conference championship season! Here's the bracketology through games on 2/17. Going forward, the auto-bid in these will go to the highest remaining seed in each conference tournament

Auto-Bids:
CCC: Curry (7)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (8)
MIAC: Augsburg (22)
NCHA: Adrian (2)
NEHC: Hobart (1)
NESCAC: Trinity (3)
SUNYAC: Geneseo (5)
UCHC: Utica (4)
WIAC: Stevens Point (9)

At-Large:
Elmira (6)
Plattsburgh (10)
St. Norbert (11)
Skidmore (12)

First Four Out:
Bethel (13)
Stevenson (14)
Hamilton (15)
Endicott (16)

With a potential 9/4 split here, I did two different versions of the bracket: Option 1 adheres to the 500-mile rule completely, Option 2 bends it slightly to have an all-West pod, and keep the NY teams from having to make the trip to Michigan

OPTION 1

First Round:

Augsburg @ St. Norbert
Elmira @ Geneseo
Skidmore @ Trinity
Plattsburgh @ Utica
Plymouth State @ Curry

QUARTERFINALS:

Plymouth State/Curry @ Hobart
Elmira/Geneseo @ Adrian
Plattsburgh/Utica @ Skidmore/Trinity
Augsburg/St. Norbert @ Stevens Point

OPTION 2

First Round:

Augsburg @ Adrian
St. Norbert @ Stevens Point
Skidmore @ Geneseo
Plattsburgh @ Elmira
Plymouth State @ Curry

QUARTERFINALS:

Plymouth State/Curry @ Hobart
St. Norbert/Stevens Point @ Augsburg/Adrian
Plattsburgh/Elmira @ Trinity
Skidmore/Geneseo @ Utica

Bracketology posts are fun, but shouldn't Hobart, Adrian, Trinity and Utica be receiving 1st round byes, as of now?

Don't know, just asking.

Only 3 byes because 13 teams make it now

But to your point, in a perfect world, yes, 1-3 would get the byes, but in our current format, unless all 3 teams are in the East, it's probably not gonna happen

I thought you were leaving this "cesspool"?

Does it make a difference if PERENNIAL NATIONAL POWER Utica goes out in the first round or, if getting a bye, the quarterfinals?

You would think such an astute and informed follower of D3 hockey would be aware that the tournament expanded this year. The Old Granddad must really be doing a number on the brain cells.

I came up with a slightly different bracket, giving the top 3 seeds the first round bye. It guarantees a flight in the first round, but if seeds holds, would have no flights for the QF, with a maximum of two. Not a more likely bracket, but one that adheres to bracket integrity a bit more. I like Pioneer's bracket, just came up with an alternative...
