2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

I see them shoving the four non-west Adrian teams together, to make sure only one west team goes to Hartford. (unless Adrian pulls a couple upsets)

First Round:

12) Salve Regina @ 9) Plattsburgh
13) Plymouth State @ 7) Trinity
11) St. Norbert @ 3) St. Scholastica
10) Bethel @ 6) UW-Stevens Point
8) Adrian @ 5) Geneseo

Quarterfinals

12) Salve/9) Plattsburgh @ 1) Elmira
13) Plymouth St./7) Trinity @ 4) Utica
11) St. Norbert/3) Scholastica vs. 10) Bethel/6) UWSP (at highest seed)
8) Adrian/5) Geneseo @ 2) Hobart

I think this requires no flights before the Frozen Four and doesn't deviate too much from a "fair" bracket.

My thinking was trying to keep bracket integrity over the possible flight before the final four. I was able to keep byes for #1, #2, and #3. Your bracket is pretty reasonable too. Based on the year, either would be possible. The committee has risked a QF flight in the past...

Thought I'd take a shot at a tournament using the Pairwise as of 1/12/2024 and using a 13 team field. I couldn't come up with a field that guaranteed no flights before the Phinal Phour, but it's possible based on the outcome of one first-round game:

First, the teams are as follows:

1. Elmira
2. Hobart
3. St. Scholastica
4. Utica
5. Geneseo
6. UW - Stevens Point
7. Trinity
8. Adrian
9. Plattsburgh
10. Bethel
11. St. Norbert (current beneficiary of the new at-large bid)
12. Salve Regina
13. Plymouth State

First round:

Plymouth State at Utica
Salve Regina at Geneseo
St. Norbert at Adrian
Plattsburgh at Trinity
Bethel at UW-Stevens Point

Quarter-final round:

Bethel/UW-Stevens Point at St. Scholastica
St. Norbert/Adrian at Hobart
Plattsburgh/Trinity at Elmira
Plymouth State/Utica vs. Salve Regina/Geneseo

This was a quick mock up for discussion... anyone improve it?
Utica out in first round again??

Utica out in first round again??

Jerry, you apparently have bought into the fake news about Utica.
They are 0-0 in the first round of the NCAA's.
(Utica is 1-2 in the quarters and 0-1 in the semis. That's the truth and, yes, it hurts)

True, the one you picked definitely makes sense! I could see it for sure. The only question is would they put an NCHA matchup in the first round?

They did back in 2013 (Eau Claire at SNC - last year of the old NCHA) and in 2014 (Adrian at SNC - first year of the new NCHA).

I should have said their first game…….

Because I have yet to see official word one way or another that we're going 12 or 13 teams in this tournament, you're getting both versions of the bracket until further notice

Here's the 12 team bracket:

CCC: Salve Regina (10)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (12)
MIAC: St. Scholastica (3)
NCHA: Adrian (6)
NEHC: Hobart (1)
NESCAC: Trinity (7)
SUNYAC: Geneseo (4)
UCHC: Utica (5)
WIAC: Stevens Point (8)

At Large:

Elmira (2)
Skidmore (9)
UNE (11)

First Four Out:

Norwich (13)
Trine (14)
St. Norbert (15)
Plattsburgh (16)

Round 1:

Adrian @ Geneseo
Plymouth State @ Utica
UNE @ Trinity
Salve Regina @ Skidmore

Quarterfinals:

QF1: Salve Regina/Skidmore @ Hobart
QF2: Adrian/Geneseo @ Elmira
QF3: Stevens Point @ St. Scholastica
QF4: UNE/Trinity @ Plymouth State/Utica

And here's the 13-team bracket:

CCC: Salve Regina (10)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (12)
MIAC: St. Scholastica (3)
NCHA: Adrian (6)
NEHC: Hobart (1)
NESCAC: Trinity (7)
SUNYAC: Geneseo (4)
UCHC: Utica (5)
WIAC: Stevens Point (8)

At Large:

Elmira (2)
Skidmore (9)
UNE (11)
Norwich (13)

First Four Out:

Trine (14)
St. Norbert (15)
Plattsburgh (16)
Curry (17)

1st Round:

Adrian @ Geneseo
Plymouth State @ Elmira
Norwich @ Utica
UNE @ Trinity
Salve Regina @ Skidmore

Quarterfinals:

QF1: Adrian/Geneseo @ Hobart
QF2: Salve Regina/Skidmore @ Plymouth State/Elmira
QF3: Stevens Point @ St Scholastica
QF4: UNE/Trinity @ Norwich/Utica

Could you see them maybe ponying up and paying for an extra potential flight if it maintains much better bracket integrity? In this scenario, if Adrian beats UWSP, then they'd need a flight to Duluth. But given the Frozen Four is at Trinity, they would only be guaranteed one flight for that round. So the potential maximum flight number would be two. Is a Adrian/Geneseo vs. Hobart quadrant of the bracket that features 3 of the top 6 "seeds" enough to risk an extra flight? I'm not so sure, but I could be wrong.

First Round:
Salve Regina at Skidmore
Plymouth State at Utica
Norwich at Geneseo
Stevens Point at Adrian
UNE at Trinity

Quarterfinals
Salve/Skidmore at Hobart
Plymouth St./Utica vs. Norwich/Geneseo
Stevens Point/Adrian at St. Scholastica
UNE/Trinity at Elmira

I like the thinking, but in the past, they have shown that they will prioritize not having flights over bracket integrity. So until they show that they're willing to bend on that policy, I'm operating as if the 500-mile rule is firm

They bent it for the women in 2023. Giving Adrian a bye and having the first round being Hamilton vs Nazareth. Hamilton won and was over the 500 mile limit...

Also as a note going forward: I cannot predict what the NCAA will do in terms of allowing the 500-mile rule to be broken. I wish I did, but here we are. So you will see the bracket with all of the current rules being followed, and then we can discuss what the NCAA will do until we're blue in the face

Auto-Bids:
CCC: Salve Regina (T-18)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (10)
MIAC: Augsburg (29)
NCHA: Adrian (3)
NEHC: Hobart (1)
NESCAC: Trinity (7)
SUNYAC: Geneseo (5)
UCHC: Utica (6)
WIAC: Stevens Point (4)

At-Large:

Elmira (2)
Hamilton (8)
St. Scholastica (9)
Skidmore (11)

First Four Out:

UNE (12)
Trine (13)
Bethel (14)
St. Norbert (15)

Round 1:

Augsburg @ St. Scholastica
Geneseo @ Adrian
Salve Regina @ Utica
Plymouth State @ Trinity
Skidmore @ Hamilton

Quarterfinals:

QF1: Skidmore/Hamilton @ Hobart
QF2: Geneseo/Adrian @ Elmira
QF3: Plymouth State/Trinity @ Salve Regina/Utica
QF4: Augsburg/St. Scholastica @ UW-Stevens Point

I wonder if losing to Augsburg in the playoffs would be enough to drop St. Scholastica out of an at-large bid?
