2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

With Plattsburgh winning in OT they've essentially traded their chance at Pool C for home ice for the SUNYAC championship, not that they had any choice in the matter.

a win is a win. OT does not make a difference, The computer doesn't know it was OT. Not having the 25th regular season game with a D3 game win on the record instead of a win against a D2 opponent that means nothing is what is hurting.

Can someone explain how a Utica win and an Elmira loss bumps Elmira ahead of Utica in the PW? That doesn’t make any sense.

Actually, it does. An OT win is worth less than a regular time win thanks to tweaks to PWR. Just like a home win is worth less than a road win.

What I don't know is if this still applies to a playoff OT win, because that format is five-on-five instead of three-on-three.

I was looking at the NCAA D3 Pre-Champonships Manual today and in the Pairwise Criteria for Division III it says, "No adjustment to calculation for games decided in overtime." So apparently the OT adjustment is only a Division I thing???

That would be a boon to a certain team with 5 OT wins this season.

IDK, but what is up with all this tinkering with a nearly perfect (and completely transparent) process?

My opinion: stick with the PW -or the RPI- and quit moving the goalposts.

Makes D-3 look corrupt. And silly.

I've been wondering about this. I know all the adjustments are always driven by the D1 men, and it has always bothered me that (apparently) everyone else has to go along with it. But, you seem to have found evidence that is not the case (and I know the D1 women are now using what's called the NPI instead of PWR). I can find out. Let me ask around.

That’s news to me. I just looked, and last season’s pre-championship manual did say “overtime calculation adjustment applied.”

The DIII women’s hockey pre-championship manual for THIS season still says “Games decided in overtime will be weighted at a 67/33% ratio.” So apparently this must have been a decision specifically made by the DIII men’s hockey championship committee for this season.

And if the D3 calculation truly is different than the D1 calculation, do the USCHO pairwise rankings account for the difference?
