Of all the moronic attacks on evolution "it's just a theory" tops the list. In science, a theory is the sum total of all knowledge on a subject, and leaves us with The THEORY of gravity. The "It's just a theory" crowd would have us believe a scientific theory is just a hunch. As in "Inspector Clouseau's theory is that Maria Gambrelli shot the victim in the face."
Science is forever throwing out "knowledge" that no longer meets the requirements of replicability. Creationists or "Intelligent" Designers frequently suggest science clings to unproven "theories" in the face of contrary evidence, but they are the ones still promoting a view of the beginning of the earth from Genesis. It is they who are unwilling to reconcile those pre literate texts with carbon dating.
And the idea that we should teach both evolution and creationism (or whatever) and allow the "kids to make up their minds," is utter nonsense. Do we do that with any other subject? "Some people opposed slavery, others thought it was a pretty good deal, you decide." That doesn't mean we can't let students know about the conflicting points of view, the Scopes monkey trial, etc. And what the Intelligent Designers believe. But, at the end of the day, in a science class, we're morally obligated to end the argument and teach the kids the best that science has to offer. Contrary views are better taught in Sunday school, where they belong. Every kid in America should be required to watch "Inherit the Wind" several times between middle school and 12th grade.
