Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Based on the portions I've read since people continue to quote the troll, meh. I read better trolls over at Fark on their business tab, let alone their politics one.

Maybe I just miss the old days around here so any glimpse of fireworks merely takes me back to an older, simpler time. Where's dupree at these days, anyway?

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

So what you're saying is that you take political threads here seriously? Well there's your mistake. :)

JMHO

Me...I dont take ANYTHING seriously...but I do enjoy reading it for entertainment purposes and I dont find that crap entertaining. Maybe if I didnt see that kind of discourse everywhere I would find it funny as satire but it isnt satire, that is how people think. It just makes me sad and that defeats the purpose of reading political threads :) (which is to laugh my *** off as Dem Worshippers like Kepler and GOP guys like Patman argue over which side sucks the least and truly believe it! :D )

Off fighting in Iraq with nate91b? ;)

See those guys were fun and entertaining...Old Pio does not even deserve to mentioned in the same breath as the old timers!

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

So? Is that supposed to be in support of his contention that there are no lessons to be learned from the Third Reich? There are many lessons to be learned, and I think he understands that. He just doesn't want me to ever suggest one. With him it's personal. The Germans seem to understand that, because it's my understanding that all these years later it's still illegal to show or own a copy of "Triumph of the Will." They must think there's some lesson to be learned. No?
I have watched "Triumph". It is probably the greatest propaganda film of all time. However, I wonder on the wisdom of Germany and Japan of surpressing the ugliness that occurred from the mid 30's to 1945.

The Germans don't suprress the ugliness exactly, they just don't tolerate any reminicing. There was a guy from Lincoln, Nebraska, who made a living printing and exporting German language Nazi propaganda magazines and books. His name is Gary Lauck and I don't know if he's still in business. In the 90's he made a trip to Europe and was popped by Interpol, which had an arrest warrant issued by Germany. He was brought back to the Fatherland, tried, convicted and sent to prison. The Japanese, on the other hand, have been much slower to come to grips with the ugliness of their regime. It's not uncommon to read Japanese references to "the late unpleasantness" and other euphemisms for the war. And from time to time various Japanese Prime Ministers have issued apologies to groups of victims. However, both countries seem to have gotten to about the same place. I think there's no future for National Socialism or Japanese militarism.

"Triumph" was indeed the greatest propaganda film of all time. Stalin was reportedly a big fan, but just didn't have any Leni Riefenstahls on the payroll. Try watching some documentary on the rise and fall of the Third Reich and see if they can get to the end without using at least some images from "Triumph." It can''t be done.

Leni's "Olympia" also set a standard for sports films that everyone since has embraced. The diving sequence is stunning. I once had a professor who told us whenever he got pessimistic about the future of cinema, he'd rerun that sequence and it always helped.

Putzi Hanfstaengl, Hitler's foreign press secretary, used to tell the story of an effort to hook Leni up with the Fuhrer. They were left alone for an evening. Next day, Putzi gave her the silent "well, what happened" gesture, with palms up. And she just shook her head.

The only thing that can destroy a thread quicker is some old posters reminiscing about the good ole days.

The civility of the right is tracking with the stock market.

Coburn: 'It's a Good Thing I Can't Pack a Gun on the Senate Floor'

Sen. Tom Coburn, expressed frustration with his fellow lawmakers this week, describing them as "a class of career elitists" and "cowards,” and adding, "It's just a good thing I can't pack a gun on the Senate floor."

The president's "intent is not to destroy, his intent is to create dependency because it worked so well for him. As an African-American male" Obama received "tremendous advantage from a lot of these programs," Coburn

I owe you one 'cause you stood up for me last week. So you get a pass here. ;)

Wow. And Sean Hannity whines about class warfare on a daily basis? That might be the sickest form of classism I've ever read.

What Senator beat the living stuffing out of a fellow Senator over slavery? I'm thinking it was Calhoun(?).

Thinkin a bit about this.

Today is filled with people who say one thing and do something else. From Obama's positions in campaigning vs. executing the presidency...to Perry's claim that nothing is more important than states rights, until he says we need to tinker with the Consitution to limit citizens rights (gay marriage).

I can understand disapproval of language. But you are one of a smallish percentage of posters who mean what they say and say what they mean...and have no problem discussing it. We may have little in common...but hats off for those traits.

Oh and XYZ...this post is my revenge. :)

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Christ I would pay money to USCHO if they would develop a feature that would not force me to read the stuff by people on my ignore list even if they are quoted. What is the point of being able to ignore someone if everyone who wants to fight with him quotes his stuff?
Just as I was getting to your post I was thinking who I needed to put on ignore to avoid having to read the drivel

It's my fault. I'll quit now.
Thank goodness.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Whats worse is posters I do like like Slap Shot and Scooby just look like idiots when they argue against him.

I thought my last exchange with him ended on a fairly harmless note. True Pio and I will never be political bedfellows, but I don't think it's been overly contentious on the whole.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Latest Perry chatter was on a visit to New Hampshire....where he was quizzed on Global Warming and Evolution. Yes and answered that their both unproven theories.

Of all the moronic attacks on evolution "it's just a theory" tops the list. In science, a theory is the sum total of all knowledge on a subject, and leaves us with The THEORY of gravity. The "It's just a theory" crowd would have us believe a scientific theory is just a hunch. As in "Inspector Clouseau's theory is that Maria Gambrelli shot the victim in the face."

Science is forever throwing out "knowledge" that no longer meets the requirements of replicability. Creationists or "Intelligent" Designers frequently suggest science clings to unproven "theories" in the face of contrary evidence, but they are the ones still promoting a view of the beginning of the earth from Genesis. It is they who are unwilling to reconcile those pre literate texts with carbon dating.

And the idea that we should teach both evolution and creationism (or whatever) and allow the "kids to make up their minds," is utter nonsense. Do we do that with any other subject? "Some people opposed slavery, others thought it was a pretty good deal, you decide." That doesn't mean we can't let students know about the conflicting points of view, the Scopes monkey trial, etc. And what the Intelligent Designers believe. But, at the end of the day, in a science class, we're morally obligated to end the argument and teach the kids the best that science has to offer. Contrary views are better taught in Sunday school, where they belong. Every kid in America should be required to watch "Inherit the Wind" several times between middle school and 12th grade.

Matthew Harrison Brady: I do not think about things I do not think about.
Henry Drummond: Do you ever think about things that you do think about?

Stop that. You made sense.

My world view just crumbled before my eyes. :)
