Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Sorry, but this is effin brilliant. Belongs in somebody's signature.

thanks, I've never been accused of brilliance before (hoping it wasn't sarcasm). But then I thought of a better way to express the "point of reference" thought I was trying to get at: The known universe could be a germ on the leg of a fly on a speeding car's windshield. From there science might be able to describe the fly, and even the irrefutable "Law of Constant 55 MPH Wind". But there's still a heck of a lot more we don't know than what we do, from God's POV.

Little reason not to be disappointed.

And Daily Show does some bomb dropping on a few easy targets in the republican party.

There's easy targets everywhere...from the hippies protesting on Wall Street to the Tea B*gg*rs on capital steps...there's enough material for comedians for the next 2 years.

Neither wing likes Obama. Let's see if the middle can get him reelected.
It's interesting timing that one of the most centrist presidents in history serves at the same time as one of the most radicalized parties in history. Obama's appeal in '08 was hope. Obama's appeal in '12 is sanity.

Not even the middle really likes him...well I think the undecideds were sitting at 64% disapproval right now.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/pub...among_undecided_voters_64_disapprove_of_obama

Rasmussen does tend to lean right...but that is not a good number either.

The only Republican with a chance to beat Obama is Romney...and the religious far right is too thick to look past him being a mormon to get him nominated.

Perry would get murdered in the election.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Looking at the 2012 map on this site, I see:

170 EV guaranteed for Perry and 186 for Obama, with 182 in play.

That's not getting killed, even if Obama got all the rest.

The problem with the GOP's top two contenders, at this point in time, is that there's little overlap in the state's that they might have appeal to. Perry I would imagine would play well in FL, VA, and NC (states on your unassigned list). Northeast blue state Mormon flip flopper Romney will struggle mightily to hold every state in the South.

On the flip side, The Mittster may play well in NV and CO with a large Mormon population and less of an emphasis on social issues. He should also nail down New Hampshire. Hard right wing knuckledragger Rick Perry will hardly even campaign in NH or CO and I don't see how he plays in the Rust Belt either. So on Kep's list all these states may be in play for the perfect GOP candidate, but in reality several of those drop off as soon as the nominee is actually known between the two main contenders.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Perry would not carry states like MI, PA or MN and probably not WI, IA or NH. But your point stands.
I don't know enough about most of those states, but there's a very strong element in PA where...

Dorothy Cooper is 96 but she can remember only one election when she's been eligible to vote but hasn't.

The retired domestic worker was born in a small North Georgia town before women had the right to vote. She began casting ballots in her 20s after moving to Chattanooga for work. She missed voting for John F. Kennedy in 1960 because a move to Nashville prevented her from registering in time.

So when she learned last month at a community meeting that under a new state law she'd need a photo ID to vote next year, she talked with a volunteer about how to get to a state Driver Service Center to get her free ID. But when she got there Monday with an envelope full of documents, a clerk denied her request.

That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.

"But I didn't have my marriage certificate," Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.

"I don't know what difference it makes," Cooper said.

State Rep. Tommie Brown, D-Chattanooga, said Tuesday that Cooper's case is an example of how the law "erects barriers" for the elderly and poor people -- a disproportionate number of whom are minorities.

"What you do, you suppress the vote," Brown said. "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out."

Papiere, bitte.

I think the red tape is absolute BS with this lady. While I do believe ID should be required, this lady should be given her ID and allowed to vote. She has shown beyond all doubt her eligibility.
