2009 Boston Red Sox

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

well i suppose they saved some money in the short run, also they werent sure he wouldnt accept the arbitration out of spite (and they'd be on the hook for another 8 to 10 mil), and they werent guaranteed any draft pick compensation if no one re-signed him even if he rejected arbitration; no one knew what his arm would do at that point. he had only pitched one good inning before the trade.

but yes, also they are stupid.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Are the Red Sox even going to try any more or just hope that the guys from 2007 will play like they did 3 years ago?

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Just heard on ESPN that the Sox have agreed in principle to a trade that would send Lowell to Texas for minor league catcher/first baseman Max Ramirez. Deal is pending approval by Sox ownership and Lowell passing a physical. Sox will pick up most, if not all, of Lowell's salary in the deal. Meanwhile, if it goes through, Texas plans to use Lowell at first or as a DH.

seemingly big news. i assume that means they have a 1B in their sights.

Beltre hit .265 with 8 homeruns and a whopping .304 OBP...please no.

Rising ticket prices and lowering payroll here we come...

I love how they're trying to destroy all the good will from 2004 and 2007 in one offseason.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Heard this morning on the SportsHub this morning that the Red Sox also talked to the Cubs about a Lowell + cash for Milton Bradley deal - I would have enjoyed the inevitable falling out. :D

I might get ripped to shreds for this, but given the resources available to Theo, he's overrated as a GM.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

The system in MLB still sucks, but it's what we have. The Red Sox obviously don't have the money that the Yankees have, but I don't think Henry is spending as much as he should given the system in place and that he is still raising prices.

My issue with Henry/Lucchino is that they like to pretend that they're hurting for money but when you see Fenway filled every night and folks are paying higher-than-average prices for the seats and everyone in New England owns at least five pieces of Red Sox merchandise, not to mention the transplants and bandwagon fans that do too... It's tough to buy what they're selling as far as being a mid-market team spending beyond their means and they need to cut back. It's tough to listen to someone claim to be financially hamstrung when you know its not the case.

The Red Sox spend more for draft picks and IFAs than certain entire divisions of baseball combined do.

But please, continue this woe is me bit, it is quite enjoyable. :D

JD's post was completely reasonable. he said the Sox have more money than almost everyone but they aren't acting like it.
it's not like he said the officiating was good.

Reading comprehension isn't his strength.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Shank has always referred to that as a bag job. The local bidder was a concessins guy who got screwed when that old lady hand holder joker gave aramark a long term sweetheart deal beofre they (MLB) got the team for John a-doubleU.

They rake in so much money it's criminal they try to cry poor. They sold out their sox-pax sale this weekend as well as the yard sale Sunday. All those game being offered saturday will be sold before Sunday is over. If not I'll be shocked.

I think Henry is spending more than enough money given the system in place. They're throwing in more money for prospects than any team in baseball and that includes the Yankees.

So exactly what does he want Henry to spend more on? If they have more money than everyone else what do you exactly want from them? They spend more for IFAs and domestic draft picks than anyone else. They make a mockery of the slotting system at every turn.

But dear me, they must not be spending enough.

What are you determining how much money the Red Sox spend? The MLB payroll? Do you have the numbers for all expenditures? Or are you just being your usual self and speaking from the gut?
