2009 Boston Red Sox

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Team Payroll, meaning free agents. I didn't think this was hard to grasp...

I don't like that ticket prices are going up while payroll is going down.

The Red Sox spend more than everyone in the draft and for IFAs. You want them to spend for the sake of spending money when they take that money and instead of signing one guy at 10 million they sign about 20 draft picks and IFAs?

I'm done arguing with you guys since you don't have the actual figures except for payroll. Payroll is just one component of the costs incurred by the franchise. Red Sox also spend well on scouting, especially Pacific Rim. Unless you have all the figures, it's kinda disingenuous to claim the Red Sox don't spend enough.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

My issue with Henry/Lucchino is that they like to pretend that they're hurting for money but when you see Fenway filled every night and folks are paying higher-than-average prices for the seats and everyone in New England owns at least five pieces of Red Sox merchandise, not to mention the transplants and bandwagon fans that do too... It's tough to buy what they're selling as far as being a mid-market team spending beyond their means and they need to cut back. It's tough to listen to someone claim to be financially hamstrung when you know its not the case.

Exactly, well said. Management is no longer putting any money into Fenway since the various expansions over the past few years. The place is a dump and it's been paid for many times over. It appears at this point that owners and shareholders are lining their pockets. There are other clubs in MLB that do this as well.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

*Pounds head against wall*

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT DRAFTING/INTERNATIONAL FREE AGENTS

I'm strictly talking about this offseason and how to make the team better for NEXT season.

For example, I would like them to re-sign Jason Bay and sign John Lackey.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

What are you determining how much money the Red Sox spend? The MLB payroll? Do you have the numbers for all expenditures? Or are you just being your usual self and speaking from the gut?

Because it's completely reasonable for me to spend my 30 minute lunch break going through the Red Sox payroll expenditures, right?

Do you not see the irony is castigated Red Sox fans for whining about the Yankees outspending them and then making fun of them for complaining about the team not spending INTELLIGENTLY? Or I am the only person who finds the two issues to completely different?

Not going to argue with GLM's point about the high ticket prices because that sucks on toast.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Nice to see TBA channeling hockydad.

It's OK, Dan Shaughnessy feels your pain.

It's actually a really good piece and he refers to the 2002 sale of the Red Sox as a "bag job."

Holy Parise does that man cling to points like a fat guy clings to a bag of Cheetos. Since the story broke that Mass wants to spend $9 mil on a foot bridge to connect the parking lots outside Gillette, I have not heard him talk about anything without bringing it up in some way.

He's slipping though...he forgot the gratuitous shot at Curt Schilling in this column.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Exactly where did I channel hokydad? That's just mean. :D Sorry that I follow your draft picks and signings more strongly than you guys tend to. :p

I have no beef with Schilling either, not in agreement with his politics but the man could pitch.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

or Beltre

yes, i forgot about him. but i just cant see this brain-trust putting all their eggs in that basket. he has been a dud since the steroid testing began. Theo is smarter than that.

a question i have is why didnt they just flip lowell over to first instead of sending him to texas to play first? Youk is a great third basemen anyway, and they would save a ton of money. plus you bench ("rest") lowell when martinez plays first and varitek catches.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Lackey to the Sox.

Now find a bat please...

Halladay to the Phillies, Cliff Lee to Seattle. Looks like Toronto is getting all prospects.

Im not a fan of Lackey but its hard to complain when you have a rotation of Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Buccholz, Dice-K and Wakefield.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Here's a shock...

Sox vs Yanks to kick off the baseball season on ESPN2.

I'm stunned.

Also, the mothership reports the Sox have a $15M offer on the table to that 21-year old Cuban lefthander who defected.

isn't it now just an assumption that lowell can play 1b (or wants to even play 1b)?

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I like the Lackey signing but the Sox still need an outfielder with a big stick (Bay or Holiday?) and a decent third baseman if they are to compete with the Evil Empire in 2010.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I'm stunned.

I could live the rest of my life without sox-yanks to be honest... remember when the other teams used to be interesting. Not saying i'd go without the red sox... but I'm annoyed by the whole sox-yanks stuff.

Apparently Mike Cameron is the answer. Sox signed him today to a two year deal. Terms were not disclosed because the deal has not become official.
