2009 Boston Red Sox

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

seem to be hoping to win a whole lotta 1-0 and 2-1 games.

Cameron is one of the best outfielders of this era, his stats have been suppressed by most of the ballparks he has played in and he is one of the greatest defensive centerfielders in baseball history.

Him in left is going to be an insane difference between him and Bay. Night and day for outfield defense.

Cameron also has some nice pop and will enjoy the Green Monster.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Apparently Mike Cameron is the answer. Sox signed him today to a two year deal. Terms were not disclosed because the deal has not become official.

Crap. Braves were interested in him too. Would've looked good in LF at Turner. Good bats are becoming scarcer every day now.

He's going to play center.

he is a nice player... but certainly not one of the best outfielders of this era. (defensive, absolutely. but me thinks you are expanding this...unless by "best" you mean "top 50")

plus he turns 37 in less than a month and has been losing speed and is still only a .250 hitter and has too many k's.

i'll give you the benefit of the wall, but i think 25 hrs would be a great year for him next season....(plus, he should be hitting 8th if the sox had a decent offense)

also, defense in left is like a tiara on a pig. :p but tell me about his arm. he had 4 A's last year (bay had 15). cameron had 3 year before, and 7 in '07. ????

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

they must be trading bucholz for an infielder. i cant see them going into the season with 6 SP again, especially with no LF or 3B

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Two "meh" moves today. I think the Sox overpaid for both of them. Cameron's a really good defensive pickup but this team needs offense in a bad way. I like trading Buchholz + Ellsbury for Gonzalez, but only if we get another bat to play LF (Holliday anyone?) with Cameron in center. Not sure if that's doable salary-wise, but it's what the team needs to contend.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I like the Lackey signing. Would have rather had Halliday but not sure of the Blue Jays would have dealt him within the division. Anyway, they need to load up with starters given some of the injuries over the past few years, and I really don't want to count on another mid year replacement like the Smoltz experiment. Beckett-Lester-Lackey-Bucholz-Wakefield works for me.

I also wouldn't deal a guy like Bucholz. Take care of any holes in the lineup (like 3rd base) via free agency or other prospects. Add one more bat at 1st or 3rd and this team is a contender. I'd like more production out of the outfield (particularly right field) but good luck getting rid of Drew.

Where's Dice-K?

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Where's Dice-K?

Injured.:D

A healthy Dice-K bumps 42 year old and also oft injured Wakefield to spot-starter/long relief duty. I'm more than happy to have 6 starters on the staff. Really want to avoid the Smoltz-Byrd-whoever stuff that happened last year as they scrambled to fill the rotation. Now if anybody gets hurt, there's already a known replacement for them, not some guy off the scrap heap.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

You know, it used to be that the Red Sox spent wisely and the Yankees spent poorly. That's how the Red Sox kept up with the Yankees, when the Yankees had a $70M+ advantage in payroll.

Now the Red Sox offer Lackey, who seems to be on his way down, a contract that pays him similiarly to what the Yankees are paying AJ Burnett?!? Come on.

The tables have certainly turned.
