2009 Boston Red Sox

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I don't think anyone took that loss too hard last night. Especially with Green's stint on the mound. Still, it would have been nice to sweep with Texas winning.

Dumb comment after the game last night. I think it was Caron who noted that the Jimmy Fund Telethon put the loss to the White Sox in perspective. Ummm, it's a game. I think going out and mowing the lawn in the afternoon would put the game in perspective, nevermind kids with cancer. There's no legitimate reason to freak out over any regular season loss in August...

You've been a Sox fan long enough to know that people freak out and obsess over every little thing throughout the season.

Yeah, but I've been a Sox fan long enough to know that it's not worth it.
People have no sense of perspective: the freak out over losses to Texas but not the 3 game set in Toronto after the All Star Break that was pretty much the beginning of the end. Huh? Freak out over streaks, not individual games.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

You're making that determination based on last night? Really? One bad game. They won the series. As long as they keep doing that, they should make the playoffs. If you start seeing them drop series they should win (this weekend, for example), then you can start worrying.

As for Penny and Smoltz, I really thought they'd have more to offer, but I also think their issues were magnified because their starts became more important in light of the struggles/injuries the rest of the team had. I'm sure Penny will land on his feet in the NL, and be a decent pitcher again.

Like I said, it's something I've been wondering since the All Star break. Last night was obviously more like the 06 team than the 05 team.

A month ago, I'd agree with you, but coming off a 3 games to 1 showing in the middle of a wild card race, not so much. In 2006, it would have been much worse that 9-5.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

I'm curious as to Theo's thought process in acquiring Wagner. Some kind of deal in the making? If not, this doesn't make much sense to me. We have a deep pen and need starting pitching.

He's going to be the ultimate LOOGY, and at the end of the season you'll offer him arbitration and likely get a first round pick and a sandwich pick.

How could you go wrong? You basically paid 3.5 million for a first round pick and a sandwich pick. Anything else is just gravy.

Yeah, alright. I turned it off after 4 so I didn't see any of the upside of the game. So I was still disgusted when I made that post.

I still don't see them making any waves in the postseason if they get there though.

A game is a streak of one. :D

Neither do, but I don't see them getting swept (2005) or finishing abysmally (2006) either. 2006 was the closest the Red Sox have come to the 2008-2009 Friars.

2006 was the perfect storm of injuries, Manny's baffling behavior and gross ineptitude.
Kepler- Well played.

No other team will be bringing him in to face Big Papi and other lefties in the 8th inning of a playoff game.

Assuming we make the playoffs. Some good starting pitching would help in that regard.

TBA... this arbitration, 1st round draft pick, sandwich pick crap sucks, if that's the reason. We're in a pennant race and fighting for a playoff spot fer chrissakes. Management can be business hero's in the off season. Give this team a chance to win now.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

It's stopped raining. Let's play the game, people.

... and we're back.

I don't think the 2006 Red Sox win that game... mostly because by this point in the season, it was more like the 2006 Paw Sox.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Not a bad weekend. And with Texas and the Rays losing today (thanks for nothing, Ozzy Guillen), the Sox move ever closer to the Wild Card.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

Byrd looked like that #3 starter I've been hoping for. It's only one game, but he looks solid with great command of his pitches. I feel a lot better about our chances right now. Still want a healthy Wake back though, and for Beckett to return to form.

Sure they've beaten up on some bad teams recently, but they're a season high 22 games over .500 after today's win. It all starts with starting pitching...all hands on deck right now.

Re: 2009 Boston Red Sox

At the risk of TBA making fun of me, that strike three call on Yooklis was one of the worst calls I've seen all year.

I'd slot him in as the #5 starter I've been looking for. Buchholtz to me is the #3 guy and the one I want starting in the playoffs. Still desperately need Wakefield to fill the #4 spot. They can hold off everybody else IMHO if the rotation comes together like this.
