Lol Dean Philips tweets that he owes Bernie sanders an apology because the nomination process is rigged

guessing he’s realizing he’s not gonna make a lot of ballots

How dare the nomination process be rigged in favor of people who can convince constituents to take the extreme measure of…..(checks notes)…..signing a piece of paper.

Minnesota 5th has two challengers to Omar in the last week

don samuels, the former city council member who lost to her last primary

Sarah gad, Arab American woman who is daughter of Egyptian immigrants announced her challenge

Samuels better run a better campaign than he did last time...it was beyond lazy and gave no reason why anyone should choose him over her outside of the Defund issue. (which wins him very few votes in Minneapolis only the burbs)

Don't know the other person, but it will be an uphill battle for various reasons. I don't see Saint Louis Park being helpful to her and Omar's part of Minneapolis is going to be a struggle for her as well.

We are way to far out for any sort of real predictions but if I was to make a prediction today this ends 1 of 2 ways:

1) most likely Omar wins a split vote with like 37-40%. Samuels finishes second and the new woman finishes third respectably in hopes for a run in 2 years.

2) Samuels wins because grad splits off enough of Minneapolis that Samuels will use his likely SLP strength to eek out a small victory.

The thing is Omar was more vulnerable last cycle. She was coming off some wildly unpopular comments and a lot of people in her burbs were getting annoyed with her grandstanding. (not me...though I understood it) Since then she has been much better in the public eye and has seemed to have learned her lesson. I am not sure if that will be as noticeable to those who were offended by her last time but if she can win back even 10% of SLP that she lost she will win in a landslide. Samuels is suspecting she can't.

On another note: I find it interesting that the play seems to be to run Muslims only in the district. The Republicans tried that last time as well. The GOP I get because it is just appropriation since they have zero chance to win the district but I wonder how happy the DFL is that another Muslim is taking aim at the seat. There is more to the 5th than a specific area of Minneapolis...

edit: Gad has an interesting story. I am not sure how well it will play in the grand scheme of things but she is definitely someone to to support.

Gad story is interesting. Her stance on safety will go over well in the burbs but also a lot of SW mpls who get tired of no police force.

and I agree with you on everything- Omar has really had a different strategy this term. I think she wins again no doubt. I don’t know where else she’s gonna go- she’s not as transferable as Ellison because she doesn’t have the education to use for a job like he moved to. She wouldn’t win any statewide elections so this is her ideal spot, will be interesting to see how long she wants to retain it

Omar can position herself long term to be a highly public voice for Arab and Muslim civil liberties, just as figures did in the past for women, Catholics, Blacks, Jews, Latinos, and LGBTQ. This will make her extremely unpopular with the people who are actively hostile, and that in turn will make her more of an inspirational figure when contrasted with that type of hate.

Being the spokesperson for the Out Group is a tough gig but it also is an opportunity.

I think she has lots of opps for foundations/civil liberty orgs etc. my point was more for elected office- i don’t see her going for gov/AG/senator etc

Yes, I agree entirely. I think Omar winds up in a position where she can be a beacon and a conscience. That is VERY hard to do as a Member, unless you have a deathgrip on your district which from what I am reading in your comments she does not.

After Muzzies there really aren't many groups left. Atheists, but the country has a lot of growing up to do before they can handle that. Another century or more. And inevitably people who get like the internet embedded into their cerebellum. Tomorrow's Cyborg-Americans are gonna have a long road ahead, with the rubes yapping about God and jobs and luddite anti-technology.

Gotta always have somebody to fear and hate. Oppositional Identity Formation is a Primate Thang.

I don’t think she has a death grip. Dems have one for sure, but I think this will be pivotal for her. If she wins this one she could be safe for some time. The fact that other minorities are all that are challenging her, time and time again, is interesting.

not all of the city of Mpls is a lock for progressives, either. The richest area has the most traditional dem rep and she’s withstood several progressive challengers handily.

While npr reporter was talking to rep burchett from TN, McCarthy walked by and shoved him. Reporter then claims burchett lunged at her

oh there’s video

Something in the water on Capitol Hill?

More like “Sitting GOP Senator gets his feelings hurt by Union Leader.”

Just another reason I’m happy with my vote for O’Brien…

The funniest thing is that Mullins wanted to prove O’Brien was a “union thug”. I’m going to go ahead and guess that Mullins does not know about the Teamsters long association with organized crime and just say “bold strategy Cotton.”

A lot of empty space in Oklahoma bud…
