World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Chelsea's Cole Palmer became the first player in PL history to score 4 goals before halftime. It took him nine minutes and 48 seconds to complete a hat trick. His 4 goals was all it took to beat a sleepwalking Brighton 4-2.

Hard Rock Stadium, Miami (Miami Gardens)
GEODIS Park, Nashville (Nashville SC’s stadium)
MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey (East Rutherford)
Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte (Charlotte FC’s stadium)
Camping World Stadium, Orlando
Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando (Orlando City’s stadium)
Rose Bowl, Los Angeles (Pasadena)
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
Lumen Field, Seattle (Seattle Sounders’ stadium)
Audi Field, Washington D.C. (DC United’s stadium)

If you’re wondering why there’s mostly East Coast stadiums, it’s because the Gold Cup is being played at the same time on the West Coast. Seattle is hosting because the Sounders are qualified thanks to winning the CONCACAF Champions League in 2022 so they get a home game. There’s one more MLS team to qualify as the “host” team, it hasn’t been announced but it’s generally assumed it’ll be the Supporters Shield winner because that’s the best chance to get Mes… err Miami in (Miami leads the standings but could still be caught by the Galaxy or Columbus, Miami and Columbus play Wednesday).
 
Messi and friends, aka Inter Miami clinched the Supporters Shield last night with a win over Columbus.

Fun story out of it: The Supporters Shield is not owned and presented by MLS, it’s owned by a coalition of supporters groups called the Independent Supporters Council. When a team wins the Supporters Shield it’s presented to the players but held onto the rest of the time by whichever supporters group of the team that’s a member of the ISC. Well, apparently Inter Miami doesn’t have a supporters group that is a member of ISC so no one is entirely sure what happens now. Though it seems a few of the groups have applied to ISC.
 
Gregg Berhalter is back to work as head coach and GM err Director of Football for the Chicago Fire.
 
And you thought MLS had bad team names…

NWSL's Boston franchise finally has a name, and it's BOS Nation Football Club, according to CBS Sports sources. The franchise, set to join the league in 2026, will unveil the new name and logo on Tuesday. The official rollout of the name can be linked to "TooManyBalls.com," a placeholder for an extensive marketing campaign around Boston to promote the new club name and colors, which will be green and black.

Edit: I never thought a team name could be worse than Real Salt Lake and in comes Boston with this monstrosity.

USMNT gets smoked by Mexico 2-0 in Guadalajara.

The good news is that Pochettino’s resume gives him some slack and the fans and journalists are finally starting to say “why do the players look like they’re not giving any effort?”

Don’t think so. But also not a great excuse when considering previous results against Mexico with less than stellar lineups (2021 Gold Cup Final immediately comes to mind).
 
MLS considering switch to fall-spring season after 2026 World Cup.

MLS executive vice president of sporting product and competition Nelson Rodriguez told The Athletic it is still “too soon” to know if MLS will institute changes or what those changes could be.

“We have been engaged, really, since January, and it’s been very extensive and exhaustive and deliberate,” Rodriguez said. “It’s still too early. We’re still asking questions. We’re still collecting and analyzing some data. We’re still formulating models. Some of those models are for formats themselves, some of those models are how to assess the information that we get.”

I get there are pros and cons to this. I just don’t see the pros outweighing the absolute mess of scheduling for northern teams and the likely attendance hits.
