Nah, Nixon kept it short and to the point. His resignation letter is still the gold standard that should be used by any intelligent individual resigning from their position.

Very true.

Nixonian would be if Blatter's hand-picked successor immediately pardoned him as quid pro quo. Never sell Dick short.

It would be interesting to know what #presidentnixon or whatever it is is saying about Blatter.

Interesting that Sepp thought holding the election would make the problems go away.

If England get a Cup out of this, I think Barry and Lynch will get an unlimited bar tab in the UK.

Can we elect John Oliver to some sort of office? The man gets it done.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

I'll have to listen to Oliver's segment again, but given that sponsors didn't back out, he's off the hook for having to eat McDonalds or drink a Bud Light Lime.

Looks like at this point, he don't give a flying FUDGE about it, and is popping the bubbly. https://twitter.com/iamjohnoliver

At this point, it could have just been a couple of the big corporate heads got together behind the scenes to get him out with a your blood or your signature on the resignation letter type of offers.

Fox was live from their set in Vancouver. A set that's still under construction.

I'm actually laughing that some of the African fans are sad. They say that the U.S. and England are being babies. These people are so misguided.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Glad he's gone. If you read the comments on some of these international news items that seem obvious to us, most of the world is composed of idiots, so no surprise in any of this.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

IMHO.... the US should stay out of it until there's no other realistic choice. Actually, the UK, too. Qatar is going o fail- so wait until either country can low-ball a "rescue" bid to make it happen.

It's not as if there's not some really amazing choices for venues that already exist. For Christ's sake, they brought in real grass for ONE game to the Big House. And the game DIDN'T MATTER.

So many huge stadiums around the country.

And watching the EPL, is very similar over there.

In other words, wait until you REALLY can make some money on FIFA. :)

In many parts of the world, what we call bribery and corruption, they call routine cost of doing business. We believe in the rule of law, they are still stuck with raw arbitrary exercise of power without restraint.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Don't kid yourself, we are. If the US had won the 2022 hosting rights, do you honestly think this investigation would've occurred?

The investigation? Yes. The resulting indictments? Maybe not. But not because the U.S. got it, but because Qatar wouldn't have. You're missing a smoking gun at that point.

I don't think we would be mad if the Aussies got 2022. They at least don't have 1,000s of slave laborers dying to make their stadiums..

Also, I beat UEFA feels kind of dumb for not backing England for 2018.

I've always wanted to goto Australia and to a world cup, that would've been a great excuse to knock off two birds with one stone.

No one would've flinched if Australia had won. Again, Qatar was the smoking gun in the room, because there's no reason to put it there other than bribes.

There's a lot of history at play here also. For a long time FIFA was dominated by Europe with South America having a little influence and others pretty much powerless. Other parts of the world still smart from that and also appreciate that Blatter fed at least a bit of FIFA's riches to local organizations for grassroots activities (though it sounds like at least some of that money doesn't get to its "intended" purposes). Don't underestimate the regional differences in how this is all perceived. And of course the voting method of FIFA, where some tiny island nation of 5,000 gets the same vote as Germany or Brazil, begs for favors to be bought or cultivated, as Blatter was a master of.

Since when did the Big House have a roof and reside in Detroit? :D
