Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

No one would've flinched if Australia had won. Again, Qatar was the smoking gun in the room, because there's no reason to put it there other than bribes.

I strongly suspect that every awardee has done it with bribes, since at least the 80s. It's an open secret that the US won the 2002 Winter Games with bribes. Why would the 1994 World Cup have been any different?

Point being: it's ubiquitous.

This. It's analogous to being a big football school - if you're consistently fielding championship squads, you're at least bending some NCAA rules, if not outright breaking them. It's the nature of how things are done today. It's not right, but if you can't beat 'em, you usually join 'em.

IMHO.... the US should stay out of it until there's no other realistic choice. Actually, the UK, too. Qatar is going o fail- so wait until either country can low-ball a "rescue" bid to make it happen.

It's not as if there's not some really amazing choices for venues that already exist. For Christ's sake, they brought in real grass for ONE game to the Big House. And the game DIDN'T MATTER.

So many huge stadiums around the country.

And watching the EPL, is very similar over there.

In other words, wait until you REALLY can make some money on FIFA. :)

I don't think Michigan can host, sidelines are too small. While still regulation, I'm pretty sure they're below preferential standard for World Cups. Though I must say the thinner field did seem to cause more chances than normal, which was fun.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm waiting for someone to pull out the square field. FIFA allows for a 100x100yd field. Unfortunately not for international matches.

*Puts on referee shirt* Actually a square field is illegal as Law 1 of the Laws of the Game states the field "must be rectangular."

(No, I will post a link because I'm not giving FIFA the clicks)

a square is a rectangle...
Smartass. :p

From Wikipedia because I won't link FIFA:

The pitch is rectangular in shape. The longer sides are called touchlines. The other opposing sides are called the goal lines. The two goal lines must be between 45 and 90 m (50 and 100 yd) and be the same length. The two touch lines must also be of the same length, and be between 90 and 120 m (100 and 130 yd) in length. All lines must be equally wide, not to exceed 12 centimetres (5 in). The corners of the pitch are demarcated by corner flags.

For international matches the field dimensions are more tightly constrained; the goal lines must be between 64 and 75 m (70 and 80 yd) long and the touchlines must be between 100 and 110 m (110 and 120 yd).

Not that I'm suggesting Michigan Stadium, but that it's a good example of one of many stadiums that can be converted to be a wide enough grass surface. Seems like the entire WC tournament could be at different stadiums that have seating of over 60,000, and never repeat one. Which is why the US (or UK) should wait until it's "too late" and get paid to host the WC in 2022.

IIRC, Chicago almost pulled their Olympic bid due to the trend of spending HUGE dollars, and seeing it just go away. Don't need that.

I also think that the US could do a WC for very little cost- other than the actual surface to grass. The only thing that could be a hang up are the physical seats- I may be wrong, but one thing that would eliminate the Big House is the lack of actual seats.

I don't get how someone as dumb as him could get so high up in FIFA. He doesn't seem intelligent in any way. He also doesn't seem very credible.
He apparently knew how to play the money games at FIFA, which has been one of the most important skills to have at FIFA for a good while. I agree he doesn't come across very well.

There are some utter morons in the top echelons of business and government. Some people have an insanely high BABIP.

Game? The "game" is simple- "yes, I will take your money for a vote" whatever the case may be. Pretty easy game to play- as evidenced by some of these guys. Oddly enough, easy to play very, very badly, too- as evidenced by the total lack of decent coverup of the payments.

I know as a soccer person I'm supposed to be excited about the Womens World Cup, but I'm not. It's hard for me to care.
