Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

So what exactly is the holdup on the Cosmos stadium talks? Last I knew, they had narrowed down to something like a half-dozen (or less?) possible locations throughout the five boroughs.

I would've thought that there might have been an announcement about the Cosmos being the 20th team by now, and I figured that the lack of a proper stadium was the part that had to happen first. Unless Garber is asking for a larger franchise fee.

I never said otherwise, my thing about being a frontrunner wasn't a shot at you.

No worries...I just don't want people thinking Im some glory hunting wank...that's all :D

Stoke and Newcastle set to go at it today at the Britannia. Any thoughts???

They're working on a trying to build a stadium, I don't know what the last update was. Plus, they're working on an ownership group. Chuck Blazer ( soon to be former CONCACAF Sec-Gen.) is reportedly leading one right now.

The Arsenal match was insane!!! Weird refereeing decisions and utter chaos in the last 20 minutes. Also, John Terry...Where do you start with that one???

Crazy win for Arsenal. Who'd have thought with all their problems recently the'd become the first team to every score five on Chelski at Stamford Bridge in the EPL?

Sorry guys. Did no one tell you? That was a meaningless game.

haha. That game could go a long way in determining a CL spot. Don't be surprised if even Chelsea falls out of the top 4. This season has been strange already.

Stoke 0-2 Newcastle '41

Ba at the double in the first half for the geordies. Shocking right now as Stoke is usually a tough place to play...Newcastle dominant.

They do have several locations for a potential stadium (One next to Shea Stadium, one in Staten Island, one in Brooklyn), but I guess the holdup is bureaucratic stuff (surprise). None of the possible locations are break-ground ready. They apparently have 3-4 strong ownership groups in contention, but the league has kept things very close to the vest. Personally, I think the best location for a stadium would be right across from Yankee Stadium where a soccerfield currently sits. Erect some stands and boom, stadium ready to go. Of course there would be a ton of crap to deal with from the community who were ****ed off enough at the Yankees for taking away a park for 4 years.

I'm taking a look at the area southwest of Yankee Stadium on the satellite view of Google Maps. I guess I'm not seeing there being enough room for a MLS-sized stadium. Maybe if you took away "Heritage Field" (I'm guessing that's in the footprint of the old stadium?), you could do something with that lot, but it seems a bit narrow.

Without knowing anything about the other sites, one would have to think that the area by the old Shea Stadium in Queens would be a good spot. Would that be too "out of the way" for most New Yorkers?

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Is Newcastle really 3rd in the EPL right now? Wow...

The thing I find really interesting is that it's mostly been the same crappy players they've had for a few years now.

Edit to add: Although of course it's been summer signing Demba Ba doing most of the scoring.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Blackburn sent me a 25 minute survey on the state of the EPL.

I haven't taken it yet, but wondered if anyone else has gotten one?

I assume you need to be signed up for your clubs newsletters, website, etc. in order to receive one.

I've gotten them from City before...nothing yet this season...but Im sure I'll get another one.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Happy to see the Magpies doing well. They were the first EPL team that caught my eye on my own (my first soccer coach at age 11 in 1988 was a United fan) and while I don't expect them to last this high in the table I love it for now.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Random American soccer tidbit...NSC Minnesota Stars won the NASL Championship in only their second season and as the lowest seed in the playoffs.

Plenty of people go out there for Mets games; it's not too far out of the way if you have a compelling product. (Or, given that we're talking about the Mets, even just a somewhat appealing product.)

Also bear in mind that there are lots of Mexicans and other Latinos in Corona and Jackson Heights and other neighborhoods in northeast Queens, and lots of Koreans in Flushing (a demographic I don't think MLS ever done much to court, despite sizable populations in some of the league's biggest markets). Plus it's a decent location if you want to attract Long Island soccer moms and their kids, certainly better than one in upper Manhattan.

Ugh. How many times do we have to see this approach fail?
