Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Full Text for those people without extra:
I generally agree with that view of our national teams. If you look at the Mia Hamm teams they had more skill than the team this year.In particular they could use both feet, were better with the ball, and had better vision.
IMHO unless or until we get rid of Bradley as national coach and go with the program that Klinsmann had outlined a few years ago, we will be in the same boat or worse. I think that program will affect both the men and the women.

You're falling into two traps.

One of those is the same as the writer: a youth system's results lag by about ten years. While the shortcomings of the MNT and WNT are instructive about past issues with the youth system, they don't tell you much about how it is right now. The youth system (particularly for the men) has been undergoing constant evolution over the last ten years or so, with the most dramatic changes coming with the MLS youth teams and the Developmental Academy system.

The second is more simple, believing Bradley has the slightest thing to do with youth development in this country.

The U17M looked terrible in their WC, so at what age level are we talking about this not being a problem?

The third qualifying round for the Champions League is set. Hi-light include Rubin Kazan- Dynamo Kiev, Rangers-Malmo, Macabi Haifa-Maribo.

Question, I thought Man City had to play a playoff round becaue they finished third. Not hating on them, just wondering why they got advanced to the group stage because I thought 3rd and 4th in the EPL had to go through a playoff.

City has automatic qualification to the CL. This is based on the UEFA coefficients. The top 3 nations receive 4 CL bids. Of those 4, 3 are automatic group stage bids. (United, Chelsea, City). The 4th place team must go through a playoff. (Arsenal). The playoff is not a given...they could face some stiff competition. The 3rd and 4th playoff round losers drop to the Europa League.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

The WPS game last night between magicJack and the Atlanta Beat sold out. Tonight's match between the Boston Breakers and the WNY Flash has not sold out yet. Wish I could go, but I'm a little far away. Tonight's game will be on FSC live at 6PM ET. It'll also be the Breakers' "project pink" night to raise money to fight cancer.

Also, Abby Wambach was named player-coach of magicJack after the players complained about the old coach and he was removed. If you watched the game last Wednesday, you could see Abby coaching from the sidelines (just before they scored). It appears we have a candidate to coach the USWNT at the 2019 World Cup.

Good points. However that is the problem, the head coach of the US mens team SHOULD have a lot to do with how players are developed. The fact that he doesn't is hurting us.

so every 4 to 8 years we should completely revamp how younger players develop?

No, he SHOULD NOT have a lot to do with how players are developed, and the fact he doesn't has JACK-ALL to do with our problems.

Ultimately, the CLUBS should be the primary driver to how players are developed, because the CLUBS are the ones who deal with them day-to-day and the CLUBS are the ones who have the most to gain by developing players efficiently.

And the clubs know that developing youth players is more important than some 16 year olds winning a tournament.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Well certainly the clubs have a lot to gain. However I think the reason Klinsmann was not ultimately hired was his insistence on control of the youth development process. Personally however, whatever system we have used to get players for the national team up to now does not work, and has not ever worked. So for the head of the national team to say that he needs players who can create better, or actually finish, or whatever, means to me he has a say in how they develop.

Gee, top shelf. I wonder what would happen if the men raised the crossbar by 2 feet or so. That is one sport where a bigger (taller) net is needed.

Blackburn fell to Villa in a well played game in Hong Kong 0-1. They will play the loser of Chelsea/Kitchee on Saturday.
