World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

They played a technically sound game. Japan knew they couldn't match the US player for player or match their offensive skill.

They capitalized on their opportunities and took advantage of a US backline that overacheived in the Brazil game and really was average at best through the majority of the tournament.

I think my kid's U14 C3 team has a more dependable back line than that club did yesterday. At least they know to clear it the **** out of danger. :(

We gift wrapped the first opportunity to the degree that it felt less like Japan earned the opportunity, but they put it in the net. I didn't think Japan played well. The US realized that the way to disrupt the Barca-like passing was to jump on the backs and not give them time to build...it worked really well.

Agree with other comments that the US squandered too many scoring chances. Thought the Tobin Heath sub was really suspect at the time...it didn't turn out too well either.

Never will be a fan of PK's being the solution...win or lose. Granted it is a test, it's not like picking straws...I think another 15 minutes would be a better test.

We know how France and Brazil felt, it could be argued the team that dominated those contests didn't win either.

Yesterday's match on ESPN garnered an 8.6 rating. The USA-England World Cup match drew a 7.3 rating and was on ABC.

I disagree about the France match, the US dominated at least half of that match.

Your point? It was for a title. You don't think a USA vs Anyone World Cup Championship Match would do better?

Heartbroken we lost, but I don't hate Japan for winning it. First, I have a good high school buddy that lives there with a Japanese wife and child. Second, they deserve some happiness after the stuff they've been through. Good on them.

So we choked away the World Cup, and now we're going to be responsible for crashing the global economy after we fail to raise the debt ceiling.

America needs a hug.

Yes, plus the game was refreshing because the referee didn't act like some North Korean schoolteacher on a power trip. She actually smiled at the players and talked to them rather than calling fouls and pulling out cards, and the players responded. Other than that, the ref was pretty invisible, which is a good thing. Some tightly contersted play, but no really dirty stuff; the one red card was deserved, but not because it was a dirty play. And the US player (Morgan?) who got fouled didn't pout, or act like she had been clubbed like Nancy Kerrigan. There were also no Marta-like histrionics, and no Erika-like stretcher incidents.

She was steeled by her time in the 2 Bundesliga. Some, um, interesting run ins:

(Music maybe a little NSFW? Certainly bizarre).

Bibiana Steinhaus, also a 2.Bundesliga referee. It was gonna be either her or Kari Seitz from the US for the Final.

She may have a shot of eventually being in the Bundesliga but who knows. It's rare for a woman to referee to referee in the top-flight, Sandra Hunt worked in MLS, a few Euro countries and Australia have one or two.
