World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

A question for those more in tune to CONCACAF...How important is the Champions League? It certainly seems less prestigious, perhaps significantly less prestigious, than the Mexican or MLS championships. Is it prestigious at all? While I'm at it, does anybody care about the Open Cup?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I think the Open Cup is convoluted as to who's in it. They should just what the FA does and open it up to all teams. I go through the tourney tree and all teams are not qualified. It doesn't make sense.

I'm not sure how the Mexican sides take it. I think it's underappreciated by the fans of MLS clubs, unfortunately. Not only does the CCL indicate supremacy at the club level of CONCACAF, it also provides entry into the Club World Cup and a possible match against either the Copa Lib champion or the UEFA champion.

While I'm at it, does anybody care about the Open Cup?
Not as many as probably should, considering it's something like the second oldest club competition in the world.

I think the goal is to get a manageable "round" structure, and I suspect that travel cost issues play into it (which is something I suspect is at least an order of magnitude more significant for us than it is for the FA).

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

You could regionalize it and then insert the MLS and USL teams in later rounds like they do with the EPL and Championship clubs. I just think it should be a true OPEN Cup.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

What an awful decision to disallow a Liverpool goal that would have made it 2-0.

And Joe Cole missed a penalty earlier.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Balotelli with his first goal in a Al Citeh shirt, and a precious goal it is.

1-0 Man City over FC Timsoara.

For MLS teams, CCL is under-appreciated because the MLS teams don't take the competition seriously - and they do so out of their own need for survival. MLS rosters are not large, and successes for teams are largely based on MLS results. CCL means long travel and mid-week games (itself an impact on attendance), thus with small rosters you end up seeing a lot of subs.

Not as many as probably should, considering it's something like the second oldest club competition in the world.

Same thing applies to US Open Cup - small rosters are a problem. Several teams have raised this as an issue, and I think the league is considering some roster exemptions for teams that partake in CCL, as well as eventually expanding rosters on a permanent basis as the MLS academies take root - and accompanying that with the return of the reserve league.

The Open Cup is open to all. MLS teams qualify either based on in-season finish from the prior year, or based on play-in games against the other MLS teams.

I think the single biggest thing they need to do with USOC is market the **** thing. It's got great tradition. Part of the reason the brackets are so confusing is because their website sucks. And they also need to ensure that the winner of the USOC still gets a CCL berth - otherwise all motivation for MLS teams will disappear.

That's the one thing I don't like about the USOC. Why have MLS teams play in against other MLS teams?

I also dislike the fact that you can bid for home games. Should be a straight draw.

I don't mind MLS teams playing in against themselves, because that leads to some fun matchups against USL teams. More MLS v MLS isn't compelling, really.

And you can bid for home games because the economics of the tournament requires it.

Right, but I'm saying I'd like to see MLS teams enter the tournament all at once. I think there will be 17 of them next year, so have them all enter at the round of 32 (have to get rid of one team somehow). That way, you have 16 MLS v. non-MLS matchups. I always enjoy those.

Trust me, I realize the economic aspects of it. Just saying I don't like it.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Villa and Rapid Vienna end in a 1-1 draw, which isn't a bad result considering they were playing on the road with a majority-youngster lineup.

Schedule congestion is a part of it as well, with 30 league games, teams in the CCL, SuperLiga, the World Cup this year, whatever international duty is required in others, friendlies etc.

Travel is very much at the heart of it as well, the Open Cup is regionalized in it's schedule structure to reduce cost. Plus it makes more money and sense to have say, Portland and Seattle play instead having Seattle play like Harrisburg City. The FA doesn't have to worry about travel, Portsmouth to Newcastle isn't that far of a trip compared to Seattle to DC or LA to New York.

well, we got a goal and you are right, they were young out there...why did they bring on Weimann and replace him 10 minutes later? Injury?

Yeah, I was watching illegally and they made a big to-do about how he is from Vienna and then about seven minutes later, they're going into a corner and someone gets his ankle bad. Didn't see it directly, but he had to be stretchered off.

thanks

word I hear is that they won't keep macdonald unless he makes a great go of it, he doesn't have a staff and hasn't been a manager at this level before...I think a 'better' manager will cost them way more money and maybe get them to 5th place...not worth it unless MacDonald is really screwing things up or if players are going to leave unless a name manager comes in
