World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Falmouth, ME's Roger Levesque just put Seattle up 1-0 in Honduras, definitely against the run of play.

This game is "electric yellow" (SEA) against Maraton's forest green.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The straight draw for the USOC works for me. Maybe have the lowest MLS team play into the Round of 32. If an MLS team is drawn against another MLS team, then so be it. Bidding is just dumb. You could also regionalize the draw to have a Final Four from the East, West, North and South and then mixed up once the MLS teams enter the tourney.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Sounds like Gallas is heading to Spurs. Figures!

I need a footie history lesson. The Beeb was talking about this this morning and they referred to "the infamous trade across North London 20 years ago..." as some sort of a dark precedent, maybe between the same two clubs. Who were they talking about and what made it "infamous"?

Bidding is dumb? Without bidding, the tournament probably doesn't exist beyond the amateur level cup it's always been.

I'm honestly not sure what they are referring to that happened 20 years ago. The only two things that come to mind at all are when Sol Campbell went from Spurs to Arsenal on a free transfer back in 2001. Spurs fans were (and still are) livid and called him Judas, and much worse. Or, George Graham was Arsenal manager up to 1994 when he left after a bunging scandal. But he didn't go directly to Spurs, where he ended up in 1998. He had a couple year stop in between at Leeds. So, I don't really know what The Beeb was talking about that happened 20 years ago. My best guess would be they were referring to the Campbell saga and just got the timeframe off by a decade.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Ugh, Arsenal goes up 2-0 over Blackpool in the HD game, and Blackpool is down to 10.

Everton-Wolves in standard def it is.

Also, Spurs up 2-1 at Stoke, two for Gareth Bale.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Didn't think there should have been any foul on Wolves. Ref calls one anyway and decides to award it outside the box when the non-foul (IMO) actually occurred clearly inside the area. Then a potential foul on Everton goes uncalled in the follow-up after the free kick was blocked...Cahill bangs it home.

Buzzards luck for Wolves.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Half time:

Arsenal 3 - Blackpool 0
(Walcott 2, Arshavin pen; Evatt RC)

Stoke 1 - Spurs 2
(Fuller; Bale 2)

Everton 1 - Wolves 0
(Cahill)

Birmingham 0 - Blackburn 0
West Brom 0 - Sunderland 0
West Ham 0 - Bolton 0

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Blackpool.... I don't think you're in Kansas anymore... welcome to the EPL, boys. We ain't all Wigan... ;)

Trade? Seems odd a bit... Ian Wright came to Arsenal in '91 from Crystal Palace and David Seaman came to Arsenal from QPR in '90. Neither were amid bad terms or anything like that. Hell.. I am stumped. I will ask a guy who might know and get back to you guys.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Arsenal 4 - Blackpool 0

Diaby.

West Ham 0 - Bolton 1

Own goal (Upson).

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Jeesh, Theo Walcott hattrick, 5-0.

And Blackburn go up 1-0 at Birmingham to move to the top of the table, that's fun.

Edit: Nevermind, Blackburn concede less than a minute later.

I think Arsenal's dander was a bit up after last week's lackluster second half 11x10 advantage and only being able to rescue a single point and that after the Pepe Reina OG...

To think... Fabregas and RVP are not even in the line-up today. Hell, even Diaby has scored.

Oh man!!! And now Chamakh misses from less than 3 yrds out!!! Full open goal after the Arshavin sublime cross.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I like how Blackpool's sub wants to be known only as "Ishmael."

Reminds me of Bart reading "Moby Dick for Dummies" on the Simpsons: "Call me Ishmael, dummy!"

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Ugh Blackburn needs to play better on the road this season... and they are not.

2-1 with 10 to go. Birmingham is not good, they shouldn't be winning!

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Spurs are lucky as heck.

That sure looked in. Remind me again why we don't have "goal line technology" in 2010 that can determine if a ball is actually fully in the goal??? Oh yeah... it makes too much sense.
