World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Al-Fayed wanted Fulham to be Man United of the South of England. While they aren't there yet, they are turning into a solid club. Could be another Top 10 for them after that great escape of a few seasons ago.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

That's what I would have thought, too. Might have just been gameday exuberance.
Yeah, Gentleman Jim (if indeed that's who you picked up on XM) tends to be that way.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Counting the final match of last season, Wigan have been outscored 18-0 in their last three Premier League matches.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The shocker of the weekend has to be Villa getting thumped by the newly promoted Geordies. Lerner better get things sorted out there quick, or this could be a real step backward for the Villans.

Arsenal's romp was fun to watch, but the talent gap was so massive that it was hard to not feel bad for Blackpool.

Something new to add to the list of funny sports faces: the Edwin Van Der Sar face.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

US v. Poland in Chicago on the 9th of October, and US v. Colombia in New York on the 12th.

Odd that New York (New Jersey) looks set to get another friendly.
I think they're just scheduling them in places where they'll draw well. The NYC area also makes return travel easier for players who might potentially have to play for the USMNT on Wednesday night and then for club teams in Europe Saturday afternoon.

(I also like the idea of a USA friendly at Red Bull Arena, but that's mainly for selfish reasons.)

Another interesting stat: through two matches, Chelsea already has scored 60% of Derby County's entire (historically awful) 2007-08 goal tally.

Maybe they should have asked for 50 million for Milner!!

Anytime you start with a penalty in the first few minutes and miss, you start to think bad things...when they called Young offsides (he was on by several feet) it was clear that nothing was going right. They lacked any kind of cohesion in the offensive 1/3 and just let themselves get ripped.

Even when they got down 3-0 I was still looking for a spark...it wasn't there. They earned that drubbing.

I said MacDonald needed to get off to a great start to even be considered for manager...I suspect that notion is now put to rest.

I guess I'm a little ignorant on the airport situation. I understand how the East Coast makes it easier, but is NYC really easier for the players to get out of than Philadelphia for instance? I don't personally have a problem with it, just thought it was a little weird considering US Soccer's past history of moving locations around.

Do you know a lot of Columbians in Philly?

There are a lot more direct international flights to various locations from the New York airports than there are from Philly.

SUM probably wants to throw a bone to Red Bull Arena, too. Philly got a nice chance already with the Send-Off game.

If they have it at PPL Park, that's only 20,000 seats to fill. They should be able to do that even with 0 Colombians in the crowd.

Fixed?:)

Like I've said, utterly no problem with New York, just found it odd at first glance is all.

PPL park will get theirs. I despise Red Bull, but that franchise has been through the ringer in getting that stadium built, and I have no problem with them cashing in with SUM events.

I'm glad the Johnny-come-latelys in Philly enjoy their nice new stadium, but they'll be just fine if they have to wait a bit for some international games to come their way.

I suspect that it is somewhat easier, given that there are three international airports in the metropolitan area. But the only metropolitan areas with significant Colombian populations are NYC and Miami, and I suppose that's more of a factor.

(Seems like travel would be pretty easy from Miami as well, but I don't really know for sure. It'd probably be fine if you're Clint Dempsey and you're going to London, you can fly nonstop to London from just about anywhere, but if you're Clarence Goodson and you need to get to Norway, you're unlikely to find any nonstop flights from Miami.)

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Random question here. So EPL games are once a week, Friday through Monday? Does it mean anything special when games are on Monday night? Is that like Monday Night Football or Sunday Night Baseball over there?

I don't think the EPL has played Friday games in a while.

As for Monday games being special, not really. I mean, Sky Sports rolls out the fancy MNF graphics, and all that, but the games certainly aren't guaranteed to be "BIG" like MNF games here are. I think Hull and Stoke featured on MNF last season. (Think the Lions or Rams getting on MNF in the NFL this season).

Probably more like Thursday night college football. Sure, you've got the national TV audience, but you still know the big games are on Saturday.
