World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I don't think the EPL has played Friday games in a while.

As for Monday games being special, not really. I mean, Sky Sports rolls out the fancy MNF graphics, and all that, but the games certainly aren't guaranteed to be "BIG" like MNF games here are. I think Hull and Stoke featured on MNF last season. (Think the Lions or Rams getting on MNF in the NFL this season).

Ahh yes you're right.

That is what I thought, that it was just another scheduled match. Watching Liverpool and Manchester City right now on ESPN 3. Also I am starting to read Soccernomics. Good book so far. Cannot wait to get through it all.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Now Ives tweets that NYC is out as a location.

I guess that's that point mooted then.

This is why I leave my soccer reporting to a real reporter - Goff knows all:

*The proposed U.S. friendly against Colombia on Oct. 12, first reported here three weeks ago, is close to being finalized. Neither the New York area nor Florida, locations that would draw large numbers of Colombian supporters, are no longer under serious consideration because of venue issues. So don't be surprised if the weekday match ends up at a medium-sized MLS stadium (Columbus?) geared toward a U.S. team crowd. The big ticket-revenue game is Oct. 9 against Poland at Soldier Field in Chicago, which has a huge Polish-American population. A Nov. 17 friendly overseas is also in the preliminary stages.

*shakes fist*

**** you Ives, stop getting my hopes up like that!

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Question on Paul Scholes...

Did he retire from international soccer? I was watching a show on FSC yesterday and they were praising him in every aspect of the game. Did something happen with him and the English FA?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Wow, Man City is drubbing Liverpool, 3-0 late in the match! It's going to be tough for Pool to get back into CL territory this season.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

PPL park will get theirs. I despise Red Bull, but that franchise has been through the ringer in getting that stadium built, and I have no problem with them cashing in with SUM events.

I'm glad the Johnny-come-latelys in Philly enjoy their nice new stadium, but they'll be just fine if they have to wait a bit for some international games to come their way.

Agree, not sure PPL has 'earned' it yet. But, Philly hasn't had it too tough...ManU, Celtic and soon Chivas Guadalajara playing the Union and that is just this summer. Had USWNT vs. Ireland last summer at the Linc.

I think they'd fill PPL for any game and the Linc would probably get a decent crowd too.

They built it, the games will come. As long as USSoccer think it is Philly and not Chester, PA. It isn't in the best neighborhood and the ramps to the highway aren't finished so getting in and out is trying...when the parking lots and ramps are done it would be a good venue for a MNT game.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

It's really a shame Joe Hart and Adam Johnson weren't experienced enough to earn a place in the England team this summer.

Maybe next time Fabio?

He retired from the national team several (5?) years ago. Capello tried to get him to come to South Africa at the last minute but apparently only gave him a few hours to think about it. Scholes has recently said that, given more time to decide, he might have gone.

And Capello is on the chase again:

Great way to make your current players feel confident huh?

Is that really what he's concerned about? Seems like overconfidence is more of an issue with them. (Fat Frank, for example.)

On the other hand, he's just watched Xavi pass everyone else into Bolivian at the last two major tournaments England has participated in, and maybe realizes that Scholes, at present, is a similar type of player. Doesn't hurt that Capello was at the Cottage on Sunday and Scholes had a really good match. (Good thing for Scholes he didn't go to either of the last two, I guess.)

"Nigel" (I swear I'm not making that up) on the EPL XM cast made a point yesterday: why not close the transfer window before the season starts? It seems weird that rosters are still unsettled for the first few weeks of the RS. Opinions?

Cry me a river. MLS teams abide by the same window and re-make their rosters mid-season.

I don't think anyone's complaining, I think he's just saying it's odd.

Of course, baseball teams make trades throughout the season. Hockey teams too. More rarely in football, but it happens. I don't see why it's a big deal here.

I'm saying that one of the duties of a national team manager in my opinion is to develop young talent. What does it say to said young talent when the man in charge would rather spend his time making eyes at an old ginger instead of trying to bring other guys into the fold.

Also, Scholes is playing great now, sure. But who's to say he'll still be healthy in two years time when the EUROs come around? So essentially, Fabio would be bringing him in just for winning a few qualifiers, and not developing anyone else in the process. Leaving him with another Rob Green over Joe Hart or SWP over Adam Johnson type of situation.

I think it is different than what we have the US and it is more fun. Why have everything settled before the season? Adds a little drama. When does the transfer window close?

Yeah, I like it too. A little like the trade deadline in the NBA or MLB, but with more things happening.

It closes for most of the "big" European leagues on August 31st. I know in England it used to close at Midnight, but now I think it's 5:00 at night.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Joe Hart looked excellent in the first two games. Pool was shambolic yesterday. It may be tough sledding for them. They seriously need to ditch the owners.
