Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The defending champions are in town and the DW Stadium in Wigan appears to be about a third full.

Just think how many will turn out when their opponents next season will be the likes of Cardiff, QPR and Scynthorpe.

Chelsea up 1-0 late in the first on a Malouda rebound goal.

I thought the exact same thing... lol. 1/3 full might even be generous. That place is as empty as you are likely to ever see an EPL stadium be. Wow.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Wigan's had a decent run of it in the EPL since 2005-2006. Has Martinez been the manager all that time? If the first two weeks are any indication, doesn't look good for them.

No... Martinez only took over before last season started. Steve Bruce was their manager before that for just a season and a half. Before that Chris Hutchings and then before him Paul Jewell, who was manager when Wigan first were promoted.

I agree...Martinez is already in hot water and has to be the odds-on favorite to be the first manager sacked this season.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I'm honestly not sure what they are referring to that happened 20 years ago. The only two things that come to mind at all are when Sol Campbell went from Spurs to Arsenal on a free transfer back in 2001. Spurs fans were (and still are) livid and called him Judas, and much worse. Or, George Graham was Arsenal manager up to 1994 when he left after a bunging scandal. But he didn't go directly to Spurs, where he ended up in 1998. He had a couple year stop in between at Leeds. So, I don't really know what The Beeb was talking about that happened 20 years ago. My best guess would be they were referring to the Campbell saga and just got the timeframe off by a decade.

Emailed my buddy in London earlier and he thinks also that he has to be referring to the Sol Campbell move from Spurs to Arsenal.

He wrote: "I can only think of Sol Campbell in the last 20 years.
Pat Jennings went from spurs to Arsenal in the 70s amid controversy, but I'm thinking this must be referring to Campbell."

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Makes me crazy that Wigan can only get 1/3 of the DW full. Chelski usually brings a crowd with them. I bet you a lot of the people in the stadium are Blues fans.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

So Craig Bellamy today in his first game with Cardiff: 2 assists and a beautiful 35 yard free kick goal.

He should absolutely dominate the Championship.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Villa missed a penalty kick early and then Newcastle scored about 2 minutes later.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Late in the second half....

Newcastle 5 - Aston Villa 0

 is not enough of an emoticon.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

That's a penalty but Nemanja the Diver grabbing a big ol' handful of shirt isn't? Nice to see the officials are already in midseason form.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I'll take the draw at Craven Cottage. Haven't done well in recent seasons for some reason. Chelsea is already dominating in goal difference.

Heard from about the 20th to 39th minute in the first half on XM. It was the FFC announcers but it seemed like they were dominating.

BTW, they called the 3-0 win over Man U last year "the biggest home win in team history."

Win over Juve in the Europa League maybe?
