World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I'm saying that one of the duties of a national team manager in my opinion is to develop young talent. What does it say to said young talent when the man in charge would rather spend his time making eyes at an old ginger instead of trying to bring other guys into the fold.

Also, Scholes is playing great now, sure. But who's to say he'll still be healthy in two years time when the EUROs come around? So essentially, Fabio would be bringing him in just for winning a few qualifiers, and not developing anyone else in the process. Leaving him with another Rob Green over Joe Hart or SWP over Adam Johnson type of situation.
Sure, but the most important duty of the national team manager is to win things (yes, even if you're England's manager), and if he thinks Scholes gives him a shot of doing that...

Yep, totally agreed on that point. As such, I have no problem with him trying to get him to come to the World Cup. It's this continued flirtation that I have a problem with. Do they really need Paul Scholes to qualify for EURO 2012? Are teams like Montenegro and Bulgaria really going to put up that much of a fight? Bringing him in now does nothing to help England's long term situation, just putting a bandage over the gaping wound.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Yep, have to love Steve Goff.

I think that's a great decision from US Soccer. Shouldn't have to cater to Colombians at this stage of soccer's development here.

Agree, not sure PPL has 'earned' it yet. But, Philly hasn't had it too tough...ManU, Celtic and soon Chivas Guadalajara playing the Union and that is just this summer. Had USWNT vs. Ireland last summer at the Linc.

I think they'd fill PPL for any game and the Linc would probably get a decent crowd too.

They built it, the games will come. As long as USSoccer think it is Philly and not Chester, PA. It isn't in the best neighborhood and the ramps to the highway aren't finished so getting in and out is trying...when the parking lots and ramps are done it would be a good venue for a MNT game.

Yeah, probably better for the USA overall to send it to Crew Stadium. 20,000+ waving the Red, White, and Blue, and it has been a fortress for the MNT.

To an extent, sure, this is when you need to give your Jack Wilsheres and your Kieran Gibbses and your Tom Huddlestones a chance make an impression, sure. But tinkering too much and having a group of players with no chemistry with one another is what got them into this mess, no? Contrast that (to repeat an example) with Spain, where everyone is on the same page; you could say the same thing about Germany too. Whereas Argentina were another team where they had a lot of talented players who didn't really know how to work together on the same field, and look where it got them.

I recently read the autobiography of George Cohen, the longtime Fulham player who was also the right back for England's 1966 World Cup winning team. The book was published in 2003, so the 2002 World Cup (where England were knocked out in the quarterfinal by eventual champions Brazil in the game where Ronaldinho scored that ridiculous free kick goal) was fresh in everyone's mind. He offered a pretty strong critique of Sven's approach in part because he felt that there wasn't enough stability in the squad for the players to have any chemistry with one another, as contrasted with the approach Alf Ramsey had before the 1966 World Cup of getting his squad reasonably settled well in advance and using the buildup to the tournament to get them to develop as a group.

The point of bringing that up is - if Capello thinks Scholes will be able to contribute in Euro 2012 (which would be quite a feat at 37, but that's besides the point, let's say for the sake of argument that Capello thinks he can and that he doesn't just want to call him up to make the guy feel good about himself and sell some tickets), it doesn't make sense to wait until the spring of 2012 when Scholes is thinking about retirement and throw him into a few pre-tournament friendlies with teammates he's not familiar with, he's got to be involved sooner. I mean, part of the reason he's such a good passer for ManU (Capello witnessed on Sunday) is the same as part of the reason why Xavi is so effective for Barcelona and for Spain - he knows where his teammates are going to be, where they're going to make runs, where they like to receive the ball. That's a non-factor if he doesn't have time to get to know his teammates, and when better than a match against Montenegro that England are going to win regardless so there's no harm from a few misplaced passes here and there?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Again, I 100% agree with your point that Scholes is a wonderful player, he would have helped them a lot at the World Cup, and if he does play at EURO 2012, he will help them a lot there as well. I just don't think he will make it to EURO 2012, and thus it's pointless to bring him in. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Anyways, great day in the Champions League today. Werder score in the 90th minute to send their match to extra time, then win it in extra time. Partizan beat Anderlecht on penalties.

Toronto go to Panama tonight to play Arabe Unido, one of the dirtiest teams in CONCACAF- and that's saying something.

The Crew also play tonight at Santos, but from all indications they seem ready to just slap a postage stamp on the match and mail it in.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Lima had a had trick for Braga in their 4-3 win at Sevilla to see the Portuguese side through. Sampdoria blew their chance to make it through (also at home) after going up 3-0, then giving up a tie-equalizing goal and Claudio Pizzarro's leg-winner for Werder Bremen in extra time. Anderlecht will blame "loose turf" in the penalty area for their misfortune, which included missing three penalties after a spirited fightback against Partizan Belgrade, which sets up one of those trips that none of the big boys will want to take. Basle fought the law and Basle won, 3-0 over Moldovan side FC Sheriff (4-0 on aggregate). Speaking of bad trips, Hapoel Tel Aviv topped Red Bull Salzburg, winning the tie 4-3 after a 1-1 draw in the second leg in which the Israelis scored them both.

So, Braga, Werder Bremen, Partizan Belgrade, FC Basle and Hapoel Tel Aviv, COME ON DOWN! You've been selected for the Champions League, where the price is always right!

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

The "loose turf" really seemed to have it out for Anderlecht, while it evidently had nothing against Partizan.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

It's crazy to think: there might be TWO Swiss sides in the group stage.

I know that Spurs will likely come back tomorrow against That Club With The Ridiculous Name, but it's still worth noting.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Great way to make your current players feel confident huh?

Couldn't you look at as adding a guy like Scholes will help other players GAIN confidence in their ability by playing with him. Even if he doesn't make it to Euro 2012, I don't think him playing with younger players is an automatic negative.

"Nigel" (I swear I'm not making that up) on the EPL XM cast made a point yesterday: why not close the transfer window before the season starts? It seems weird that rosters are still unsettled for the first few weeks of the RS. Opinions?

I like that idea over having a trade deadline shortly after the season begins. It's just odd seeing a guy like Milner suit up for Aston Villa in the first game of the season and then have to wonder if that's his last. Either that or I would keep the "transfer window" open well into the season like our pro sports do. Maybe I'm just used to how we do things, but JMO.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Another excellent CONCACAF referee on display tonight in Panama.
Arabe Unido are the Anti-Christ and the reason why the vast majority of fans in North America hate this competition.

Crappy referees (and this coming from a referee) are the other. Columbus just got screwed as well. Fine night for CONCACAF...

He makes the ref from Mali look like Graham Poll.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Fulham up 1-0 (Gera). Everton up 2-0 (Fellaini, Rodwell). Spurs up 2-0 (Crouch, Defoe); BBC commentary says Defoe clearly controlled the ball with his hand right before the goal and it never should've counted.

Edit to add: Fulham up 2-0 (Gera, Dembele).
