World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

At Stadio Azul?

That's only a huge result if it's on the road. If it's at home, it's pretty meh.

(There's not much to Cruz Azul "almost" winning last season, either...)

The only really remarkable result in MLS's history of international competition is DC United winning the C'CAF championship ca 1998, and then following that up by beating the Copa Lib champion Vasco De Gama in the inter-American cup.

Yeah, I'll count this as holding serve, so to speak.

Don't get me wrong, it's sure a lot better than losing. But MLS teams have done OK against Mexican teams on US soil, but absolutely horridly when playing south of the border.

How so? Cruz Azul rolled through Columbus in Ohio last season, winning 2-0. The year before that they beat DC. Any time an MLS team wins over Mexican opposition, I think it's a big deal.

Why isn't there much to Cruz Azul almost winning last season? They lost the final on penalties. Is that not any indication of how good they are in this competition?

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I dunno. It's a 4 team group, and Toronto was not favored to advance. So, I'd say it is less than huge, but more than meh. A loss would have eliminated them, most likely (I don't see TFC winning at Cruz Azul or at RSL).

TFC also has 3 straight road fixtures in CCL play now before they get their last 2 at home. So if they had lost or even drawn here, they would have been in dire straits.

In the 09-10 CCL, DC earned a 1-1 draw at Toluca (at 9,000 feet of elevation!). That was an impressive result. Unfortunately, they needed the win in order to advance and didn't get it.

Don't get me wrong, it should be a big deal for MLS teams to beat the Mexican teams, but winning at home should be expected. Results on the road are truly worth celebrating.

I think we're down to arguing the semantics here, but I don't think I ever said it was a huge upset. The result was "huge" to use my word, because coming in I would have put them as 3rd favorite to advance from the group, and because they have those 3 road fixtures in a row coming up now.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

On the "is this offensive" scale: Philly Union fans, at every opposing team goal kick, yell "YOU SUCK, ***** hole" after the kick. Very loud, very clear.

It isn't a song or a chant, it isn't clever...just mindless yelling that offends a lot of people. The club is weighing what to do...I think they should suggest to the Sons of Ben Supporters that they should come up with a new chant vs. outlawing the old one. Thoughts?

Ohhhhhhh you mean that "YOU SUCK ****** HOLE!" that like every team around this country uses (I've heard echo through Qwest Field after 30,000 have said it). Or the original Spanish word that many Mexican (and MLS) teams fans use? OMG! This is ridiculous! They used a bad word! Oh noes!

Maybe you are offended, but I wonder where you get to speak for "a lot of people"? Accept it. Things like that are going to happen at every game no matter what, and it really isn't that bad.

It sets them up nicely, yes.

My larger point was that MLS teams have gotten results against Mexican teams at home. Getting results on the road has been almost non-existent recently.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Cater to the soccer mom crowd and you get a situation like Dallas. With a supporters section with 0 people or so.
FYP.

If you want to know the real reason why teams like DC United, Houston, and Chicago, and lately Seattle and Toronto, have large supporters groups, it's because the FO's let them be free. And when things got heated between the groups and overzealous security guards the FO's defended their supporters. The minute you chastise and alienate them is the minute you end up on the path like Dallas.

First of all, I didn't say I was offended. I said it was mindless. I asked the folks on here for their thoughts.

The club has put out emails discussing the issue and is going to send out a survey. I thought I could tap into a group of people who follow soccer and get their opinions.

My 'solution' to what must be an issue (or they wouldn't send the emails) would be to suggest the supporters come up with something different vs. banning the old phrase which is sure to spark further issues.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

From Blackburns web site (8/17):

Blackburn Rovers can confirm that officials have held a cordial and productive meeting with Western Gulf Advisory (WGA) staff and advisers concerning a proposed takeover of the club. The process is ongoing.

Not sure why they bothered to make that statement, since it doesn't really say anything.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Americans Eric Lichaj and Brad Guzan in the starting XI as the Villa plays in Europa League qualifying at Rapid Vienna.

Barry Bannan (never heard of him) scored early for Villa, but Rapid came up with an equalizer.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

As someone who generally pulls for clubs from eastern Austria (Vienna, Graz, etc.), I'm kind of frustrated by the draw for this round of the Europa league:

I've got Rapid Wien against Villa and Sturm Graz against Juventus. Only Austria Wien has anywhere near a favorable draw, but they lost their opening leg at Aris (GRE), 1-0.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

It was supposed to be, but for some reason he's been looking for a new club this summer.

So he's not back at Benfica (his "home" club), I take it. Does that make him a free agent?

*Checks Wikipedia*

Okay, he's listed as a reserve player for Benfica there. I don't understand Portugese, so I'm having trouble figuring out their official website.
