World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

But Young Boys don't have Shaun Wright-Phillips screwing things up for them all over the pitch either.

Whenever I see "Young Boys" I titter. Yes, I know, Juventus means the same thing, but still.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Remarkable. 3-2 FT.

Spurs have to fancy their chances of winning, and as long as they don't give up two or three goals a win puts them through.

New Boys has to be kicking themselves for not scoring 5 goals tonight and putting this out of reach.

OK, so Fulham are rumored to be about to announce the signing of AZ's Belgian-Malian striker Moussa Dembele. People are suggesting that a good nickname would be "Chocolate" Moussa, as a play on chocolate mousse; will overly sensitive types think we're calling him "chocolate" because he's African?

Its better than when the NBA started realizing Oscar Robertson was being called Jesus...and the press started calling him BLACK Jesus.

Huuuuge result for Toronto tonight. Winning 2-1 against Cruz Azul in the CCL group stage opener.

So call him darky instead?

Yes they will, ain't sayin' it's right, but somebody will be offended. But, hey, white chocolate is pretty popular...or maybe they could call him Bullwinkle.

On the "is this offensive" scale: Philly Union fans, at every opposing team goal kick, yell "YOU SUCK, ***** hole" after the kick. Very loud, very clear.

It isn't a song or a chant, it isn't clever...just mindless yelling that offends a lot of people. The club is weighing what to do...I think they should suggest to the Sons of Ben Supporters that they should come up with a new chant vs. outlawing the old one. Thoughts?

Extensive experience in college student sections has shown that simply telling fans they can't swear won't work.

The front office should instead be encouraging the supporters to be a little more creative somehow. And it's on the supporter group leaders to spread the word.

how about tossing the fans out? Its about time Philly fans were domesticated.

The flip side is that plenty of MLS teams have tried to do this, and immediately squash any sense of supporter culture. The supporters may use some salty language, but they're also the only ones singing and chanting at most MLS games. Teams alienate them at their own risk, IMO. Get rid of the supporters and you've got nothing but soccer moms.

A few teams got this early on. DC United has always embraced the supporters, despite some conflicts between the groups and the FO. The newer teams (Toronto, Seattle, etc) have also learned this lesson, and other MLS teams are slowly coming along.

In DC, the supporters police their own. The leaders negotiate with the Front Office, the boundaries are agreed upon, and life moves on. If the PU (love that, btw) front office wants to curtail the swearing, then discuss it with the supporters and have them police their own.

Well, first of all, it's hardly a Philly problem. I think nearly every team in the league does some variation of that chant. Many Mexican and Latin American teams do similar chants as well. I don't like it either, more for how mindless it is than how offensive it is, but I really wouldn't want to see the front office step in either.

Cater to the soccer mom crowd and you get a situation like Dallas. With a supporters section with 20 people or so.

At Stadio Azul?

That's only a huge result if it's on the road. If it's at home, it's pretty meh.

(There's not much to Cruz Azul "almost" winning last season, either...)

The only really remarkable result in MLS's history of international competition is DC United winning the C'CAF championship ca 1998, and then following that up by beating the Copa Lib champion Vasco De Gama in the inter-American cup.

I dunno. It's a 4 team group, and Toronto was not favored to advance. So, I'd say it is less than huge, but more than meh. A loss would have eliminated them, most likely (I don't see TFC winning at Cruz Azul or at RSL).
