World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Citeh and high road are two things that usually don't go together. :D

However, teams do it all the time. They'll be told to buzz off, but they will come back with more cash and the other team will listen. Lerner should complain if he's that mad. If not, then be quiet.

There are two courts, the league and public opinion. Pretty clear which one he was appealing to.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Just saw the 'Pool-Arsenal highlights. I would have given Cole a yellow, but when you go in so recklessly like that, I don't think you can complain much.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

This stupid, stupid, stupid idea deserves to be criticised more.

Shootout? Who is this guy, Gary Bettman?

Can FIFA vote him out? Why haven't they done it yet?

There's the same failed logic that the NHL critics had pre-lockout. It isn't a lack of scoring (or in this case, a lack of wins), it's a lack of scoring chances.

If you want to really cut down on the number of ties, perhaps soccer should look at ways to liberalize offense in the game itself (you know - the part of the game that leads to scoring goals, which then leads to avoiding ties) rather than come up with a new way to flip a coin and 'resolve' the problem after it's already happened.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Cole's red could have gone either yellow or red, but it's certainly not the travesty certain folks might make it out to be. A draw is really pretty fair. Arsenal I'd say had the edge in play overall, but 'Pool did quite well in the second half, being down ten men. I can live with an away draw at Anfield with Cesc and others not playing.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

I don't get it... how can a guy with ideas that terrible be worth that much money to an organization?

Well, FIFA is a cash cow. Perhaps someone else could squeeze more money out of it, but as long as Sepp keeps handing out the fat checks to all the Confederations, I don't think there will be much impetus to vote him out.

I've wondered whether maybe you could change the offside rule such that a player must be behind the last defender both when the ball is played and when he receives it in order to be offside. I don't really know how that would affect play in a broader sense though.

I was just thinking a small tweak in offside would suffice - make it so that you need visible space between the second to last defender and the attacking player - something that would make it easier for attacking players to time their runs, but not so advantageous to the offense that the defenders just sit behind the ball.

Combine that with some serious enforcement of diving, as well as end line officials (or a second referee) to help police things in the box, and we'd be well on our way...

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

In a tournament environment, even something as simple as retroactive cards/suspensions would be a great way to tackle the diving.

In a single game, or over the course of a season, it wouldn't do much. But in a tourney that's at most 7 games long, it seems like a simple and effective way to do it.

I don't think you even need to go that far on the offside rule. The rule currently is that if even one part of your body that can be used to a score a goal (head, chest, feet, leg, etc.) is past the 2nd last defender, you are offside. I might change the rule to if even one part of your body that can be used to a score goal is [in front of or even with the 2nd last defender, you are onside.

I hate hate hate the idea of a 2nd referee though. So many different styles of refereeing, I think consistency would go out the window pretty quickly.

I think consistency is already a de facto impossibility, given that you have one set of eyes trying to keep track of 22 players on the field.

Well, yes I suppose, but at least it's the same set of eyes. Say you have one referee who sees late challenges as a yellow card every time, while the other is more inclined to give a warning. Or, say you have a referee from England and a referee from Spain. The referee from England would probably be more likely to allow more physical play, while the Spanish referee blows for more fouls.

Edit: I see you talked about the additional referee policing things in the box, maybe you'll have to explain more. I was coming at this as arguing against two referees, one for each half of the field, which I've seen proposed before.

No, I want both options on the table.

Just about every other sport has multiple referees each making independent judgments, yet they manage to stay just as consistent as soccer is now.
