Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

anyone else see this: http://worldsoccerreader.com/2010/0...-national-team-coach-succeeded-martin-oneill/

Pretty funny read, although annoying since its all in italics.

a little too long, the point was made paragraphs earlier...the first comment is exactly how I feel about Bradley...wrong place, wrong time. I say keep the interim coach, which offers the most continuity. If they had gotten more than 1 point from West Ham last year they would have been far better off, he has already exceeded what MON did:p

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

As usual, Arsene Wenger tortures Arsenal fans with the prospect of filling Arsenal's obvious needs as the transfer window winds down. More than likely they go unfilled though.

Another year of Almunia flapping is goal will not be fun.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

United is knocking on the door early. Still kinda wish Patrice Evra would have some sort of freak injury.

Joey Barton starts the season in Barton fashion with a yellow.

EDIT: Berbatov scores to make it 1-0.

Fletcher makes it 2-0. United almost makes it 3-0 twice. This one could get ugly. Sorry GLM.

I read Wenger just extended to 2014, so look forward to a few more Torquemada sessions.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

3-0 Man United and it coulda been a lot worse. At least the Magpies didn't put all 11 behind the ball for the whole game and play for a 0-0 draw.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

No, I want both options on the table.

Just about every other sport has multiple referees each making independent judgments, yet they manage to stay just as consistent as soccer is now.

Okay, how would you solve the issues I think could arise?

Also, what levels of the game do you implement this at? Who gets saddled with the higher costs of two match officials, FIFA, the host country, or someone else?

As far as refs independent judgments (one calls it tight while the other lets things go), well, yeah that could be an issue, but it's also an issue in football, hockey, basketball, and every other sport that uses multiple officials. I don't see how it's any more of a concern in soccer than it is in those sports, yet I don't see calls for pro basketball to go back to one ref from the standard 3-ref crews.

If that's the only issue, then why are we even pausing, just do it already.

Start with national teams and work down from there. As domestic leagues want it/can afford it, let them implement it. Whoever normally pays refs will pay the 2nd one.

Well, it's pretty evident that one ref can't handle a basketball game, or a hockey game, too fast paced. In football, there are so many different things to watch for, that they need the 6 or 7 officials or whatever they have. I just don't see the need for an extra on field official being evidenced in soccer right now. More behind the goal? Sure. Let the 4th official have access to a television? Sure.
I also think that inconsistency could have a much greater effect on the outcome in soccer than in some other sports. In basketball, say two guys are banging down low, and the referee calls a foul that isn't getting called down on the other end. What's the penalty? Maybe the ball out of bounds, maybe two free throws at most. 2 points in a game that will likely feature at least 130 points. However in soccer, if there's a dubious penalty decision brought on by a two referee system, that's absolutely massive. 1 goal in a game that may not feature any more goals.

If you start with national teams, where do the referees get their training? They will be refereeing in their home countries all by themselves, and then on international duty being paired up with someone who they never work with usually.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Seems to have worked out well for them.

United is notorious for not winning games like that. (see opener vs. Reading three years ago. also see opener vs. Newcastle the year before.) They always seem to throw everyone forward and get only a draw for it. However, you aren't an elite team if you can't overcome a lesser team doing that.

Berbatov seems to have gotten his scoring touch from when he was with Spurs a couple years ago. Rooney still looks like he can't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Love United or hate United... Ryan Giggs is still the man.

Seems to have worked out well FOR NEWCASTLE, I meant.

Re: World Soccer XVIII: A New Season

Aston Villa has given Mancity 24 hours to complete the Milner deal or they will keep him for the season...we'll see if that is just bluster but there is a deadline this week anyway.

The team leaves for Rapid Vienna Thursday and if Milner plays it will exclude him from playing for Mancity in europa if he moves. It appears MacDonald and AVFC plan to put him on the field, partly because they want to win vs. make another early exit and I'm guessing partly to try to speed up the deal.

After seeing Milner play Saturday, I'm hoping the deal falls through and Villa finds another way to balance the books.

On a lighter note, Diego Maradonna has offered himself for the Villa manager role. Can't see any downside to that.;)

Deals done. Physicals taking place right now. Shame. I was rooting for it to fall through as well.
