Can't help but think what Jack Edwards' prepared speech would have sounded like after the dramatic victory...

Here is the awesome Spanish language call courtesy of Univision. That man loves to say GOOOOOOLLLL!!!

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Is there a good site to check which sports bars in the area have viewing parties, or should I just hit the yellow pages? Saturday is going to be great.

If the USA should advance past Ghana on Saturday, they would play the winner of South Korea/Uruguay. If they win that they will probably play the Netherlands, Brazil or Spain in the semis. Looking at last year's Confederations Cup run, is there any reason to automatically think they don't have a prayer in that game? They already beat Spain and they had a 2-0 lead on Brazil in the final.

England vs USA in the final? :D

As much fun as it might have been, I think I'm happy I didn't brave the crowd at Nevada's.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Muslims don't drink :)

Tell that to the ones I saw in the bars in the Middle East. :p

I think its funny Altidore is in the quest commercial with Messi and Kaka as if he is somehow in their same league. :D

Um, Altidore had a great game.

England are going to hate that they finished second in the group to the U.S.! :)

Eff em. ;)

Lost in the celebration was something that I found utterly hilarious, that being him saying hello to his ex-wife and blowing her a kiss. I'm guess that might have been less than sincere.

Post-game comments would show they were sincere. He said they are very good friends and had an amicable depature.

And count me as one USA fan that doesn't mind seeing Mexico get through. I think it speaks well of CONCACAF soccer.

GO USA!!

It's kind of a shame Ghana went through. I had an excellent rant prepared about what a joke it is that Africa gets 6 teams and Asia gets 4 while CONCACAF only has 3.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I was listening to the USA game on ESPN radio, and had the NYTimes' live blog up as well (as well as the Guardian's). The Times' blog has an audio clip of a goal horn that goes off when someone scores. And the radio feed was a good 45 seconds behind the blogs. During extra time I was across the room, and suddenly that Times goal horn goes off. S4it!, I'm thinking, who scored? I didn't run over to read the blogs, I stayed put and listened to the radio. That's when Algeria came down and had a decent cross and a header, which went straight at Howard, which led to the breakout and the goal. But since it was a decent Algerian cross, and an actually shot on goal from pretty close, the announcers were fired up.

Long way of saying: Fifteen seconds before we scored last night, it was obvious to me that Algeria had scored in extra time, and I had to listen to it knowing what was going to happen. What a turnaround, eh? :D Whew! :o

yeah, but is anybody going "you know what this tournament needs... those pleasant Costa Ricans".

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

The way I read the schedules on SI, ESPN, and FIFA, the path to the finals is:

Uruguay
South Korea

USA
Ghana

Netherlands (assuming they win Group E)
Paraguay (assuming Italy/Paraguay finish 1/2 in Group F)

Brazil (assuming they win Group G)
Chile/Switzerland (assuming Spain wins Group H)

Looks like a good shot in the first two matches, but then comes the possibility of Brazil or the Netherlands

when you're down to the last 4 nations on earth and you're one of them, three of the others is probably going to be hard :)

you're not supposed to remind everybody that ol' Jack is only pretending to be a psychopath because otherwise he's just a dull nerd.

True, but that doesn't change the fact that he isn't on the same level as Messi and Kaka. :p

I thought that guy Mensah had a really good game for Ghana - he had such good positioning that it was like there were two of him out there!

;)

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I just re-watched the goal and I noticed that after Donovan passed the ball to Altidore he let up slightly on his run and was seemingly thinking about stopping and thinking his part was over after dribbling for 30 yards.

Kudos to Donovan for continuing his run and not just stopping and ball watch because he stayed with the play and was in perfect position for the rebound once it popped out after Dempsey's shot was smothered.

Gotta love it!

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I like the one from Pacific Beach, CA which is titled "USA 1 vs Algeria 0 Gold Cup 2010."

Ah well, it's the thought that counts...

He had a good game but is not quite there yet. Still missing the put away chances.

Anyone else like the back four Bradley had in today? Algeria was a faster team in the open with some explosiveness, and I thought Bradley did a great job shoring up the back four after some big defensive lapses in the previous two matches.
