World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

I just re-watched the goal and I noticed that after Donovan passed the ball to Altidore he let up slightly on his run and was seemingly thinking about stopping and thinking his part was over after dribbling for 30 yards.

I don't know if he was stopping or just slowing up so that he'd be in the proverbial high slot while Dempsey covered in front of the net, to put it into hockey terms.

i think that is exactly what he did... he slowed up so that dempsey's run would open space in behind in case altidore cut it back to him... really no sense making the exact same run as dempsey (and allowing one defender the ability to mark two people at once)... holding up created more than one option for altidore, but also allowed him to keep any parried ball/rebound in front of him...

That's exactly what he did. Both Dempsey and Buddle were on that first level, where the cross was played in. Adding another body to that mix wouldn't help anything. Donovan stayed in the second level, available for a drop off pass or to clean up a deflection/save/attempted clearance.

On another note, the Union open their new park this Sunday against Seattle.

They sent all season tix holders scarves to note the occasion. Gonna be 95 and humid this Sunday, might need it to soak up the sweat.

I couldn't go to the open house due to the US/England game but drove by recently. Looks like a great little stadium.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Tell that to the ones I saw in the bars in the Middle East. :p

Um, Altidore had a great game.

Eff em. ;)

Post-game comments would show they were sincere. He said they are very good friends and had an amicable depature.

And count me as one USA fan that doesn't mind seeing Mexico get through. I think it speaks well of CONCACAF soccer.

GO USA!!

Hey, did I accidentally use your username and password? I agree 100% with everything you wrote except I could really care less about Landon Donovon's personal life.

Great commentary.

I know that as an American there is some rule someplace that I'm suppose to hate Mexico and like England, but I somehow got the wires crossed.

Kudos to Donovan for continuing his run and not just stopping and ball watch because he stayed with the play and was in perfect position for the rebound once it popped out after Dempsey's shot was smothered.

Gotta love it!
Not only that, but an outstanding pass to Altidore. IMO, that's the hardest pass to make in soccer or hockey -- to a teammate moving full speed directly away from you.

And it was preceded by a throw from Howard, probably ~50 yards and right on the money.

Really, that goal was a team effort. Donovan, Howard, Altidore, Dempsey and (to a lesser extent) Buddle all played very important roles in that play.

Of course, in the eyes of the ESPN-types it was all Donovan, but let's face it, that was a beautifully executed counter-attack.

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

Can Slovakia get through with a win or are they playing for pride only?

Go Paraguay!

Re: World Soccer XV: Diver Down

This group seems rather boring, but I'm rooting for New Zealand. They can still win the group if they win!

BTW, I know it's real early, but if these scores held...are New Zealand and Italy headed for a coin toss?
