Re: World Soccer XIV: Where JV keepers can play in the World Cup - Group Stages continued

On the field level view from somewhat behind the ref, my guess is the call is on Bocenegra. Even though he's in a headlock, he's the only American with his arms around the defender too. It's at least plausible the ref thought he saw the foul there, even though if anything it should've been on the defender for a headlock that would have made Hulk Hogan proud.
That would be my guess as from his view Bocanegra had his arms around the defender but he may not have seen the headlock (though I doubt that).

Three Lions have a little security breach.

It's not our security people's fault, they do a sterling job wherever they go
Yes, because your security people prevented the fan from getting in the locker room as well...:p

The other possibility is Edu himself, since he did a moderate swim move and initiated some contact with the defender.

Both would be horrendous calls given what else is going on in the box, but that's my best guess.

If you watch the ref during the replay his eyes are on Edu the whole time, and he even had his whistle ready to go before the play started. He knew he was going to make a call before the FK, and it was going to be against the US.

My favorite is the guy who's getting hauled down in such an obvious way, that even an NFL ref would toss a flag on.

Thats the only possible explanation I have. The foul on the free kick was one of those that could've went either way. Maybe he decided he didn't like the original decision and this wouldn't result in a goal. I'm not sure I'm ready for conspiracy theories yet, mainly because Dempsey's foul in minute one could've been red, albeit the decision would've been harsh.

Ultimately I'd never thought I'd see the day where Torsten Frings handball on the line that wasn't and the Ghanian "penalty" drawn on Onyweu don't seem that bad. At least those were a missed call and a poor interpretation of a rule. Both preferable to a Referee simply making something up.

Seriously, why is their a referee from Mali (a country poor and underdeveloped by African standards in life and soccer) at the World Cup?

edu was relatively unmarked, the guy keeping pace with him was poorly positioned in front of him with his back to edu.. when he saw the ball come in he went into a slide. i suppose its possible the ref thought edu tossed him down.

but yah. one of the more absurd calls of the tournament. slovenia were being b**tches all game like that on the free kicks. i suppose a good part of that is normal for world cup play (Sadly). assuming the usa gets past algeria, i almost wouldnt mind seeing england go through instead of them

Well, if my math is right here. England beats Slovenia and USA beats Algeria, USA and England would both have 5 points, Slovenia with 4, and Algeria with just one with their draw with England. And if I'm not mistaken, if Algeria beats the USA and Slovenia beats England, both of them would advance. A draw in either match knocks out Algeria.

Needless to say, the Knockout rounds starts Wednesday.

I just read a second feasible option for the call. The Ref saw the Slovenian team's offensive line impersonation and blew his whistle but then realized he had just called a penalty late in the game. Lacking the stones to enforce that obviously decision, he pointed the other way as a small trickle dribbled down his leg and prayed that something, anything had happened during the play that would give him cover.

Its as good as any explanation I've heard.

Re: World Soccer XIV: Where JV keepers can play in the World Cup - Group Stages continued

No becuase I said someone had to win the England/Slovenia game, you have them tying in your scenario.

If England beats Algeria they have four points. US has two and Slovenia has four.

If the US wins by any score they have five points. As long as someone loses the Slovenia/England game, one will be left with four points and the US is in.
Sorry about that. I realized my mistake later. I kept seeing "not a winner in the England/Slovenia match" (which makes no sense at all). And, your scenario-making was right.

Of course, now it's down to more of a "win and you're in" scenario (for England and the US at least). Slovenia only needs a tie. Algeria needs help, but they can still make it. And, in contrast to bigmrg's post, an Algeria win by 2 (or by scoring two more than England), combined with an England / Slovenia draw advances Slovenia (5 points) and Algeria (by having a positive goal differential or more goals for).

The only two I've heard that seem to make sense are the "He was reffing with fear and didn't want to have to make a big call" theory or the Bocanegra theory.

The corruption talk is now endless. Granted this guy isn't like Pierluigi Collina or Roberto Rosseti (they were two referees who the instigators of the Serie A scandal wanted punished because they were "too objective") but I just don't believe the fix talk.

Three Lions have a little security breach.

Good news! After further review, FIFA has determined that there was in fact no security breach. The fan was actually let in by Robert Green. He lets everything go by you see...
