If Slovenia beats/ties England
- US needs only a tie.

with the caveat that England can't outscore the U.S. by more than 2 goals in achieving the ties.

If ENG/SLO tie and we tie, though, we need their goals scored to be <= 1 more than ours for the last game. And if it's two more, we pick straws!

if this comes down to drawing lots I think soccer will have a hard time being viable in the states afterwards.

Umm what in Englands play makes anyone think goal differential for them is going to come into play? :p

Algeria was hacking England all over the pitch, got 1 yellow. Look at the yellow Carragher got compared to what Algeria got away with.

Gerrard was hauled down in the box for a corner, nothing. Crouch grabbed around the waist, no foul.

Algeria dove all over the pitch and kept getting calls.

Which is going to happen in soccer games. England wasn't denied a goal nor did it see cards thrown around like in the Germany game.

I'm not saying the ref earned an A, but an F? You're blinded by your "loyalty" to England (freaking Benedict Arnold).

Seriously. Wayne Rooney needs to be benched.

The problem is, so does everyone else except David James and John Terry and Joe Hart, and you can't bench them all. :p

We have to think that Joe Cole shtupped Fabio's daughter or something. SWP is worthless.

Is our group C really that competitive, or do we all just suck?

America would only like it if they had to sing and the best performer won or if there were torches and notes in coconuts instead of straws;) :D

So how are those picks coming? :D

I think group A so far is the only one that is totally blown for me, barring a miracle.

From FARK:

*Koman Coulibali of Mali was present at the Hindenburg crash, severely reprimanding the victims for impeding the fire's progress.
*Koman Coulibali's favorite game is 52-card pickup.
*Koman Coulibali once stopped a Presidential inauguration in progress on the basis that a vote in Colorado looked funny. Upon further inspection, it was revealed that Coulibali has never been to Colorado, or in fact North America.
*Koman Coulibali once stopped police officers mid-pursuit for speeding.
*Koman Coulibali's favorite hobby is drinking tears.
*Koman Coulibali once handled a homicide case as a prosecuting attorney. Upon learning that the victim was shot in the face, he requested that the corpse be given the death penalty.

I'm not sure why that's the case. I think the people who already like soccer will think it's asinine but that the stupidity is in FIFA's regulations (we all already think FIFA is stupid anyway after this morning) rather than in the nature of the sport itself. (Just like people who like baseball aren't going to stop liking it because Bud Selig ended the the 2002 All-Star Game in a tie or because of Don Denkinger's or Jim Joyce's blown calls; those don't change the fact that the sport itself is still entertaining.) The people who don't like soccer will add it to the list of things that they don't like about it, like ties and vuvuzelas and diving, but people who can't tolerate ties weren't going to like soccer anyway.

Koman Coulibali of Mali doesn't sleep. He waits.

Sigh.

England has 1 goal scored, not 2.
Scoreless for 176 minutes.

You know what I kind of wonder? What if, instead of the team they put on the field, Spain fielded a team of Spanish guys from FC Barcelona. Still plenty of talent, plus they know each other's tendencies and style of play the way national teams typically don't.

Valdes
Puyol, Busquets, Pique, (grab a left back from the B team)
Xavi, Iniesta, Jeffren
Bojan, Villa*, Pedro

*OK, cheating a little here since Villa hasn't actually played with Barcelona yet.

Would that group of players advance out of the group stage? I think they might.

Something I always found interesting about the Spanish league, since I mentioned the B team: reserve teams in Spain play in the same league pyramid as the main squads. So, like, Villarreal B is in the Segunda Division A (the equivalent of the CCC) and even finished 6th this year, higher than some clubs that have been in La Liga recently like Numancia and Gimnastic and Rayo; Barcelona B is in a playoff final to be promoted to that same level. Not really relevant to anything, just a tangent from what I was actually saying, but I think it's cool.

England has 1 goal scored, not 2.

Robert Green doesn't count? :D

Re: World Soccer XIV: Where JV keepers can play in the World Cup - Group Stages continued

What have we learned today?

1. Koman Coulibali is an idiot.
2. Roberto Undiano Mallenco should probably send Mr. Coulibali a thank-you card.
3. Jim Joyce should probably send both of them a thank-you card.
4. Landon Donovan is a bad *** mother. (Was that the goal of the tournament thus far?)
5. Nepotism rules!
6. We should ask the next referee to start the game on 16 minutes.
7. Germany lost and missed a penalty to boot. Serbia, which has specialized mostly in infighting in the last few World Cups, beat them. England should have lost and didn't. The United States should have lost and didn't, then should have won and didn't. There may not have been a day this screwy in the World Cup this side of 1950. Frankly, I'm shocked that I'm still alive to write this because I thought the world have ended by now.
8. This is setting itself up perfectly to mean absolutely nothing. England wins, USA wins, today was all just a dream. Though we may win the group and still have to play Germany in the first round. Woo hoo for that.
