Maybe it's because it's so frickin' cold.

Can we get a pic of Fabio Capello with the words EPIC FAIL on the bottom?

You know what I kind of wonder? What if, instead of the team they put on the field, Spain fielded a team of Spanish guys from FC Barcelona. Still plenty of talent, plus they know each other's tendencies and style of play the way national teams typically don't.

I always wondered this too, not necessarily about soccer (in fact, particularly about hockey).

By the time you hit the highest professional leagues, everybody down to the bench sitters is an incredible talent. Maximizing familiarity might compensate for any loss in raw ability. Pick the best team, not the best players.

England hasn't offically failed yet. They can still qualify for the next round. The group has been pretty much blown wide open with one game to play.

It's just not a World Cup without the Americans getting bent over without lube by some asshat referee against a European side.

The first is all the more hilarious because Findley managed to get a "handball" yellow for getting hit in the shoulder/face.

I thought the ball did actually rebound off his face and hit him in the hand (will have to go back and look at that again), but there was clearly no intention to play the ball with the hand, it was just a fluky bounce.

Speaking of Epic Fail.

The Dubious Thrill of Nil - Nil. :p

Almost everywhere English footballers appear, they contribute to a riot or two in the stands. English fans have rescued the word hooligan from the dustbin of 19th-century history. "Houlie" is Gaelic for a kind of wild Irish party where alcohol is certain and bloodshed likely. The Irish never care much about the merits of an argument as long as it ends in a fight. The modern hooligan is a Brit fan who uses soccer as an excuse for a fight. Who would have thought that the English would ever make the Irish look good?

Much ink has been spilt on the subject of soccer violence in the cheap seats. Yet sports mayhem is not restricted to the British. Italian rival spectators must often be separated by razor wire and automatic weapons. And soccer fans are hiring personal bodyguards in South Africa this year. :o

Oof, even worse expression than usual. Ordinarily Fabio looks like a cross between David Letterman and Elvis Costello.

On the field level view from somewhat behind the ref, my guess is the call is on Bocenegra. Even though he's in a headlock, he's the only American with his arms around the defender too. It's at least plausible the ref thought he saw the foul there, even though if anything it should've been on the defender for a headlock that would have made Hulk Hogan proud.

The other possibility is Edu himself, since he did a moderate swim move and initiated some contact with the defender.

Both would be horrendous calls given what else is going on in the box, but that's my best guess.

It's interesting reading the analysis of the officiating from some of the professional people on BigSoccer and other places on the internet.

Consensus seems to be that Coulibali was too inexperienced for this game, at this level. Biggest comment is that he was refereing "out of fear". Anytime something happened on a free kick near the penalty area, he had to call a foul to stop the play instead of letting go and maybe having to make a controversial call if something happened.

One thing I noticed in my review from a referee perspective is that on free kicks, he never stopped the play before the kick was taken and come in and settle things down like the top level referees will do. Instead he just had to call a foul to stop the play.

Safe to say, Koman Coulibali will not referee another game in the tournament.
