I don't like that call one bit. The ball struck the arm not the other way around...

But that just might be my internal bias against the Ghanareans.

Where the hell was that red card eight years ago?

How in the HELL was that not a red card? That is the definition of a reckless foul bordering on malicious. Coming in from that angle making, that late, and making no attempt at the ball? Holy crap. Talk about a gift.

I don't mind seeing Ghana win. And although I understand the penalty kick for the ball hitting his arm (it just occurred so close in)...the red card seems bad to me. It seemed as though it was beyond the Aussies control...but I don't know the details behind the rule.

Doesn't that red card fall into the category of Denial of Goal Scoring Opportunity?

I believe the rule explicitly states the hand has to be used "deliberately" to stop an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Hmm, right from the FIFA rule book, seems to back up what dxmnkid316 was saying:

Well, I was a ref for the better part of a decade :p

Edit: i also want to take this time using that picture to bring up another point that's killed me all tournament long. A deliberate hand ball in the middle of the field is NOT a bookable offense unless you're tagging them for deliberately wasting time, and even that's a stretch. I've ALWAYS had a problem with that.

This situation makes me glad I wasn't in charge of this match, because it's such a dicey situation.

To me, it's a handball, since Kewell had his arms in a position where (on the goal line) he could make contact and prevent a clear goal scoring opportunity. His arms weren't accidentally where they were, so that's on him. At the same time, he clearly didn't "deliberately" handle the ball....but his actions usually merit the whistle for a handball.

If you call him for handball and the PK, he has to get a red card. That's clear cut. If you don't want to red card him, then he's pretty much got to keep the whistle out of his mouth and there's no call at all, and I think that would have been very poor for Ghana. But the bottom line: someone is going to be tragically unlucky here and it turned out to be Kewell.

Tough situation for the referee. To make the call in the heat of the moment when it's THAT close in a World Cup, well....let's just say I'm glad to be watching it on TV! :)

I don't believe that's true. I think you can have a handball called there without a red card. It is a tough call for the ref, and I was just going to come here to say that i didn't like him early on, but he's established absolute control of this game, has been polite, and has generally made the right calls. Very good showing to be sure.

Edit: I stand corrected, "deliberately" is the threshold for the original foul. So I think you might be right. It's either a red card or a swallowed whistle.

I guess I don't see how in that situation you can rule that there WAS a handball and it was not "deliberate" (in that Kewell was primarily responsible for the ball hitting his arm). You probably could make the argument, of course, but I think it would somewhat be a stretch....then again, what Kewell did wasn't at all aggregious, so it can probably be seen as a stretch either way.

I agree re: the official. We could have used this kind of quality yesterday....in more than one of the matches!

Yeah, I amended my original comment. I thought I remember reading about a provision for that in the book (granted, I remember the ultimate provision by stating the referee should call the game with the spirit of the game itself in mind).

Either way...to me as an outsider, it seems to me that the appropriate call for the incident would have been a kick without the red card. Stupid rules! :)

Anyone just tuning in would think it was Ghana who was a man down, not Australia. The Black Stars have done very, very little with an additional player over the last stretch especially.

Holy crap that's a dangerous play by the AUssie. Not only does he with his spikes into the keeper, he has the gall to continue to flail his leg next to the keeper's face.

Is anyone else amazingly shocked they aren't wearing latex gloves when handling a bleeding player!?! What the hell are they thinking?

Ya...played very soft. May have played themselves out of the next stage.

You could easily give him a yellow and the PK.

The handball rule is the most poorly enforced call in the game.

Does anyone know if the Slovenian player injured at the end is OK? I just hope the young man is able to walk again! I can see why a country where they injure so easily was Serbia's ***** for the better part of a century.

Dempsey broke the guy's ankle. He's out for the rest of the tournament.

Now don't you feel good about yourself.

Why would he feel good that Dempsey broke the guy's ankle?
