Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Hey, awesome, just what US Soccer needs, losing players to foreign countries because our immigration system is Byzantine and unnavigable:

Did he grow up in the US?

edit: nobody is putting a gun to this guy's head telling him he has to play for the Armenians... does he have love and affection for the US of A or for his pro contract potential?

So we're always supposed to learn something from friendlies right? So what did we learn? Our defense still sucks, we still don't have a foward capable of scoring, and referees still hate us.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I think this game just reaffirmed that Bob Bradley has done an acceptable job in the past, but in the future the USMNT needs a coach that can bring the best out of players (Klinsmann?!). I also believe that whoever the coach is next month will let some of the up and coming US players get some time.

Now to return to my man crush, I'm glad they suggested Tim Ream as a candidate for a call up. He's certainly more reliable than Bornstein and has a lot better ball skills than Gonzalez, but more importantly he's young and fresh (like Gonzalez) and could be a future bench player.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I think Klinsmann would be great, but I don't know if he wants the job. Who else would be a good fit if Bradley moves on?

He's married to an American. Why does he have to wait 7 years to get citizenship? It's freaking 2010. Who the hell cares where people are born? Does he live here? Was he a taxpaying, employed citizen? Does he want to be here? *** is the problem?

Where people are born is an accident of geography. People aren't pre-ordained to be Americans or Armenians or Malians or whatever. People are people.

I'm sure Tom Tancredo can answer that question for you... :D

I don't know how long they had to play basketball in Argentina/Europe before they became as good as the US and I guess they had to play baseball in Japan for 50 years before they could beat the US in the baseball classic (or whatever it is called)...and in those instances it is unclear if we sent our best players and if they were actually motivated or were overpaid slackers.

From the SI article earlier this summer, as recently as the 80's our MNT was a joke. I've watched a few shows about how the European clubs train their basketball players and we all know how the other countries train their soccer teams...it is only in the last 20 years that the US has really adopted training methods that could put a winning team on the field and more recently have changed much of the youth development programs lest we end up more like England than Brazil in another 20 years.

We also have 'pay to play' here so it is possible a decent percent of our future stars aren't getting involved at all.

So, I think we have made decent progress, we've got a large country so even the above will produce enough players to form a decent team. I still wonder if it won't take another generation before we have kids who are innate soccer players vs. trained soccer players.

Soooo I didn't get a chance to watch the friendly last night (was at the Nats game, watching Strasburg not blow out his arm) - but one thing from this picture did catch my eye - and Goff mentioned it in his wrap-up: That field at the Meadowlands looks rather narrow.

Big version (too big to embed):

Did they really just spend a billion dollars on this place and not make a field wide enough to host a WC Final?

Other new NFL stadiums don't seem to have this problem. Judging (admittedly, by my naked eye on TV) from the corner hash marks, Houston had a plenty wide field for the MLS All Star game, as did Nashville for WCQ and Arizona, too.

It matters where his wife is born in your argument...

I remember noticing that the field in Philadelphia at the Linc was very narrow as well when they played there at the Gold Cup last summer.

Edit: Thinking about it further, was there an issue with Dallas as well? I can't exactly remember, but I think I remember reading a story about how the luxury box type things Jerry installed on the sidelines narrowed the field for soccer. I think the Meadowlands might have that same issue.

I see Brad Guzan is continuing the proud tradition of USA goalkeepers going bald at an early age. :D

I made this exact comment while standing in 101 last night with Sam's Army and the American Outlaws.

Meanwhile... the North Korea story is getting more tawdry.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/wor...orea-World-Cup-squad-tortured-early-exit.html

Fifa has launched an investigation into allegations that the North Korean World Cup coach and players were punished by the government after they lost all three of their games in the tournament in South Africa.

Mr Blatter said the investigation was launched after Fifa executive committee member Chung Mong-joon, from South Korea, provided new information on the issue.

Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed Bin Hamman, who recently travelled to the secretive communist nation, said he was hopeful the investigation would prove conclusive.

'There was an unconfirmed report that these players have gone through torture or something like that, but I can't confirm that.

'I haven't seen anything with my eyes or heard anything with my ears. Maybe this Fifa investigation can clear the air.'

That does look narrow, from the standpoint that there clearly isn't a lot of space behind the advertising boards that are there on the sidelines. I don't know what FIFA's rules are, though; if the field that's there right now is regulation size, does that matter? (I can't tell whether the field is actually regulation width though.)

Yep, the Linc looks narrow:

So does JerryWorld:

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

A FIFA .pdf (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afd...08/fqcrequirementsmanual(may2009)specimen.pdf) gives these requirements:
Length:
Minimum 100 meters (110 yards)
Maximum 110 meters (120 yards)

Width:
Minimum 64 meters (70 yards)
Maximum 75 meters (80 yards)
I can't seem to get the PDF to load; is there any requirement as to how much space there has to be outside the actual pitch? Like, space to take corners and throws? And, does anyone know what the actual pitch size was last night? "It looked narrow" is one thing; "It was only 61 meters wide" is another.

"Regulation Size" is a range - these are all on the small end of the range, from what I can tell. FIFA has been quite clear, however, that they'd prefer 105m x 68m, and 'require' it for the Final:

http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/tou..._recommendations_and_requirements_en_8211.pdf

That's essentially 115 yards x 75 yards.

Red Bull Arena has a 75 yard wide field - note the hash marks on this pic:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3219/2656091057_4d3209394e_b.jpg

And compare them to the ones I linked above to the Linc and JerryWorld. I'll bet those other fields are set at 70 yards wide, which is probably the smallest you can go.

5 yards isn't a lot, we're talking about 7.5 feet on either side of the field. They could probably squeeze that in with some minor adjustments and temporary sod in the corners - or maybe they'd require a little construction in the corners.

For JerryWorld, you could add some temporary scaffolding in those field level suites and lay sod on top of that, the stands are far enough away from the field to make that work. But New Meadowlands looks like you'd need some more aggressive cuts into those corners to make it work, like the Rose Bowl's 1994 renovation:

I'm not sure if this exactly it, but there's a section on "run offs".

Run-offs shall be in accordance with national and or competition rules. In the absence of any such rules a minimum of 3 meters per boundary is recommended.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Thanks for looking that all up, guys.
