Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

More reports today that Bradley has quit. A paper in Birmingham saying that he's due to take over at Aston Villa next week.

Well, this could end up being the best of all worlds.

The USSF doesn't retain him - getting a new person in charge is a good idea just to mix things up.

They don't fire him, either - giving him a chance to make a graceful exit and find a new job.

An American will get a shot to coach overseas.

Would that be enough to make me finally commit to a club, and to choose AVFC? Maybe. Although the small part of me that's been leaning towards West Brom won't like it.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Well, he's better than Sven. That said, I think there are some Villa fans who will hate him even if he wins trophy after trophy, just because he's American.

Well this is how it might play out if Bradley is hired.

1) Villa want to sell Milner, MON wants the offer that includes several players plus cash, Lerner interjects and just wants the cash making the team weaker.

2) MON quits when he finds out they're also willing to give Ashley Young away for peanuts

3) Lerner hires yes-man Bradley who has never coached at this level.

American or not, I think Bradley is in for a dogfight.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I actually hope Bradley succeeds. I'd love for him to stick it to the snobby British press that looks down their noses at American soccer.

Yeah, and I don't disagree with any of that. My point is, there are fans who are going to hate him no matter what he does or doesn't accomplish.

MON agreed earlier in the year that they were going to sell and not reinvest all of the proceeds...he decided to include Ireland in the deal which is inconsistent with the agreement. Somebody had to go.

Plenty of teams have to realize their status as less wealthy than ManCity, just like MLB teams have to choose not to compete with NYY, BOS etc.

If they spent the money would they have an much higher chance of finishing in the top 4? They had Milner and didn't do that. They let Barry go and finished in the same place. So, if you were AVFC would you rather risk the future trying to buy your way into 5th place or stay in the 5-10 pack and live to fight another day? Sure, ManCity has decided to try for the brass ring, but a lot of other teams are holding pat so it is conceivable AV will finish 6-8th again without Milner. A good business decision.

Add to that the discord that apparently existed between MON and several players and the departure may end up keeping some players (Davies) that were going to leave otherwise.

Sounds about right.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Some of my thoughts.

1. It's time to replace Bradley. Even if someone better isn't available, keeping coaches longer than four years is unusual, even in major soccer nations. The reason is that it doesn't work out that well. Think Marcello Lippi and Bruce Arena.

2. I thought Bob Bradley did a great job. As some of you may remember, four years ago I wasn't pleased with Bradley's selection. I was looking for a better tactical coach. However, the general improvement we made over the four years, the Confederation's Cup run, the wins over Mexico and winning the World Cup group makes Bradley's tenure a success.

3. Klinsmann would be my first choice. I see him as a gift to the US soccer community. How often does a nation just developing as a soccer power have an experienced World Cup coach come to their country to live and contribute? Let's use him. Klinsmann did great with Germany in '06. He struggled at Bayern, but so have a lot of great coaches. It's a tough place to coach, especially for a consensus builder like Klinsmann. Only "My way or the highway" guys succeed at Bayern and we don't need that kind of personality for Team USA. I say give Klinsmann a shot. If things are a mess in two years, we can try someone else, but not giving Klinsmann a shot is like giving back a gift unopened, in my opinion.

4. I would be okay with any of the Schmidt, Yallop, Kinnear crowd. MLS is the big thing in US soccer and any coach that has been successful in the league would probably do fine with the national team. I think Yallop's tenure with the Canadian team would be helpful for him. Schmid would be well respected by the players. Kinnear impressed me at Houston. I think he's had them consistently over perform.

5. I wonder if Roberto Martinez's name will come up in rumors. He presented himself very well and came across as very knowledgeable about the international game in his broadcast role with ESPN this past summer.

6. Carlos Alberto Parreira is probably the biggest available name coach out there. Weren't there rumors that he was interested in the US job when Steve Sampson was hired? I don't think Parreira would be a great fit, but his name will certainly come up.

7. I know it's not time yet, but I suspect Bruce Arena will coach the national team again at some point in the future. He's still the best American born soccer mind we have and he knows the personal. I think his biggest weakness for both club and country is that he is too loyal to aging players and doesn't give new guys the chance to prove themselves.

Ok, I'm all for having new blood at USSF and everything but I'm just apprehensive about having a foreign coach during Qualifying. I see a similar thing as to what happened to Mexico under Ericksson. As coach that just has no idea what CONCACAF is really about. Granted, that situation might have been more about Mexico being Mexico than Ericksson but it worries me that a similar situation could happen. CONCACAF is just whole different ball of wax compared to the European game and a foreign coach would just have trouble to adapt to that in my mind.

Think about it, you have to take players arriving from across the country and Europe on a Monday, practice for a day, travel to El Salvador for a game on Wednesday, play that game and try to get a point, travel to Nashville and play Trinidad & Tobago on a Saturday in a must win. It's tough for any coach, let alone a foreign who has idea about playing Central American or Carribean sides.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

And the Premiership is underway with a 0-0 draw between 'Arry's Crew and Al-Citeh, mostly thanks to Joe Hart.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

That was as entertaining a 0-0 draw as you are going to see.... especially in the first half. Joe Hart was sensational with three highlight-reel saves. I think Shay Given better pack his bags... Hart is the #1 at City no question now.

The prediction here is that Given ends up at Arsenal before the transfer window closes.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Nice to see that DirecTv finally has FSC EPL games (and the whole channel, apparently) in HD. What a massive difference it makes.

But, why does Fox Soccer Plus (channel 621 on DirecTV), still not broadcast in HD even though the picture says it is (similar to last season)?

Stuart Downing of Villa scores the first goal of the EPL season... Villa 1, W Ham 0.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Unfortunately, sounds as if a Howard howler has put Everton behind 1-0 to Blackburn.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

PETROV!

Villa 2-0 Wet Spam (and they're playing like it, too)

Furthermore, Friedel makes a nice save on the other end to keep it 2-0.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

No way Given ends up at Arsenal. City aren't going to give one of their top 5 rivals help at the position in which they most need it.
