Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I'd be happier with Schmid, Kinnear, or Nicol. I'm not convinced there's interest from non-MLS foreigners at a price range USSF can afford, but I'm also a lot less hung up on the OMG foreign coach! thing than the inferiority complex crowd.

What do Schmid, Kinnear, or Nicol bring that Bradley didn't? To me it just seems like a lot more of the same.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

They have similar profiles (suggesting similar success) while keeping things fresh so that the team doesn't get stale, as it did under Arena toward the WC in '06.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Ok, I'll bite. Who do you suggest we go after that is a better candidate than Klinsmann?

Klinsmann doesn't have some sort of spectacular track record. His job with Germany was to be the rah-rah type while the current German coach Joachim Low was the tactics maestro.

I want the Low type, not the Klinsmann type. Do I want Klinsmann to take over the youth development in this country? Absolutely.

Do I want him to be the USA coach? No. Germany's ride in 2006 was decent, but what has he done since?

Maybe not a bad thing, but certainly not a great thing. More of a "meh" thing.

Klinsmann doesn't have some sort of spectacular track record. His job with Germany was to be the rah-rah type while the current German coach Joachim Low was the tactics maestro.

Do I want him to be the USA coach? No. Germany's ride in 2006 was decent, but what has he done since?

I'm not so sure the opinion of an England fan matters here.

I'm saying if I was a USA fan, I wouldn't want Klinsmann. I'd want a tactical guy, which Bradley wasn't. And neither is Klinsmann.

Just because I don't root for the USA first doesn't mean I don't know who is or isn't over-rated and isn't right for the USA job.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

To echo Red Cloud, do we care what some English hooligan thinks about Team USA? No.

No, it just means your opinion means jack-**** since you have 1)no vested interest and 2)a conflict of interest.

Hahahaha.

I'm sorry, since I probably follow world soccer more than most, and I have a differing opinion on Klinsy. My bad. I didn't know people who didn't root for the USA first and foremost didn't get opinions! :)

Also why do I have no vested interest? I root for the USA second, and how arrogant are you to believe that one coach is the difference between the USA and England on a regular basis? He's not going to be the difference, youth development will be (and favors the USA in the long run.)

Conflict of interest is kind of a red herring, isn't it? I mean, it's not like his opinion actually has impact on anything such that he would have something to gain by being dishonest here.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I actually agree with TBA here. Did you guys see Klinsman in his final season at Bayern? He was a mess.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

What do Schmid, Kinnear, or Nicol bring that Bradley didn't? To me it just seems like a lot more of the same.

Scmid has better track record of success in MLS compared to Bradley and is well respected in US Soccer. He seems to better able to get more out of players and is the fiery individual that US Soccer needs IMO. Although personally I'd hate to see him leave Seattle.

Kinnear is the same as Schmid, better track record, respected etc. More of a defensive coach which is something that the team needs.

Nicol brings experience as both a player and a manager. No much of a success track record compared to the others. Respected and has shown to get ability out of young players and a great judge talent. Defensive minded which, again, is something the team needs.

If I had to pick I'd go with Schmid but I'm a bit biased as I see his team every week.

I don't think the problems with Bradley had to do with getting the most out of players though. One of his biggest assets is that many of them seemed willing to play their hearts out for the shirt.

More of a defensive coach? How so? Also, it's not like we were bombing forward all the time under Bob. I don't think our defensive problems came down to the coach's mindset.

Nicol is an experienced player and manager. Fine. Bob had experience as well. Nicol as a great judge of talent? How have the players he's brought in from Africa panned out? I'd say he's at less than 50% success there.

All 3 of these managers are fine coaches, I really don't dispute that. I fervently disagree with the notion that they would be able to take us any higher than Bradley has though.

The reason Low is the Head Coach of Germany right now is because Klinsmann brought him in to be his assistant and be the tactical guy. You don't think Klinsmann can find another tactical sidekick?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Some of my thoughts.

1. It's time to replace Bradley. Even if someone better isn't available, keeping coaches longer than four years is unusual, even in major soccer nations. The reason is that it doesn't work out that well. Think Marcello Lippi and Bruce Arena.

2. I thought Bob Bradley did a great job. As some of you may remember, four years ago I wasn't pleased with Bradley's selection. I was looking for a better tactical coach. However, the general improvement we made over the four years, the Confederation's Cup run, the wins over Mexico and winning the World Cup group makes Bradley's tenure a success.

3. Klinsmann would be my first choice. I see him as a gift to the US soccer community. How often does a nation just developing as a soccer power have an experienced World Cup coach come to their country to live and contribute? Let's use him. Klinsmann did great with Germany in '06. He struggled at Bayern, but so have a lot of great coaches. It's a tough place to coach, especially for a consensus builder like Klinsmann. Only "My way or the highway" guys succeed at Bayern and we don't need that kind of personality for Team USA. I say give Klinsmann a shot. If things are a mess in two years, we can try someone else, but not giving Klinsmann a shot is like giving back a gift unopened, in my opinion.

4. I would be okay with any of the Schmidt, Yallop, Kinnear crowd. MLS is the big thing in US soccer and any coach that has been successful in the league would probably do fine with the national team. I think Yallop's tenure with the Canadian team would be helpful for him. Schmid would be well respected by the players. Kinnear impressed me at Houston. I think he's had them consistently over perform.

5. I wonder if Roberto Martinez's name will come up in rumors. He presented himself very well and came across as very knowledgeable about the international game in his broadcast role with ESPN this past summer.

6. Carlos Alberto Parreira is probably the biggest available name coach out there. Weren't there rumors that he was interested in the US job when Steve Sampson was hired? I don't think Parreira would be a great fit, but his name will certainly come up.

7. I know it's not time yet, but I suspect Bruce Arena will coach the national team again at some point in the future. He's still the best American born soccer mind we have and he knows the personal. I think his biggest weakness for both club and country is that he is too loyal to aging players and doesn't give new guys the chance to prove themselves.

I don't know that this is necessarily logically sound, saying that we shouldn't keep a coach for longer than a four-year cycle because other countries don't keep a coach for a longer than a four-year cycle. Something your mother once said about all your friends jumping off bridges would seem to apply here.

I think an advantage we have over major soccer nations is that our media won't demand a coach's head after a couple of underwhelming friendlies. (I mean, in Brazil they wanted Dunga out before the World Cup because he wasn't winning their qualifiers and other matches with enough flair - this after they finished at the top of CONMEBOL WCQ and won the Copa America!) And because there isn't that pressure, the USSF can do what it deems best without having to worry too much about media pressure.

By the nature of the sport, coaches kept for a second cycle won't win, sure. But not all that many teams win a tournament. The vast majority of coaches who are new in a given cycle aren't successful either, because only one team wins the World Cup, and one team wins the Euro, and one team wins the Copa America. Winning any competition like that twice in a row is exceedingly rare. (Less rare in the Gold Cup because the pool is awfully shallow except for the USA and Mexico.) I mean... did Marcelo Lippi fail to retain the World Cup this summer because keeping the same coach for a second cycle is categorically a bad idea? Or was it because a group of players that was good enough to win a difficult tournament four years ago was four years older and largely past its prime? Brazil had a different coach in 2006 than they did in 2002, and they didn't repeat either. Did the USA fail to get out of the group in 2006 because Arena had gotten stale? Or was it because of an extremely difficult group and some questionable officiating?

None of this is to say that retaining Bradley is necessarily the best choice going forward, though. I just don't see there being any conclusive evidence that retaining a coach for a second cycle is categorically a bad idea, and especially where you're not necessarily changing because you have a better coach in mind (Alf Ramsey is not walking through that door), but rather where you're just changing for the sake of changing.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Thank you. I would have missed that. ESPN at 1:55 Central time.

I miss a fair amount of decent soccer on ESPN's networks because I don't know about them.

We may pick on ESPN for excessive Favre coverage, but they are doing good at showing soccer lately.

Nicol hasn't won any major titles (though he does have an Open Cup and a couple of Superligas to his credit), but he got the Revolution to I think three finals (losing to LA and twice to Houston), and that with relatively poor front office support in New England.

The biggest question with Nicol is his talent evaluation, i.e. how much do you blame the blah NER roster on him and how much do you blame on other parts of the front office.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

More reports today that Bradley has quit. A paper in Birmingham saying that he's due to take over at Aston Villa next week.
