Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I doubt Milner going was the last straw. Like you say jmh, I almost think he got the better of the Milner deal, if he really was getting cash and Ireland in exchange.

The two likelier possibilities in my mind are either that he was told by Lerner that he wouldn't be allowed to spend the Milner money how he wanted to, or more likely I think, he was told that Ashley Young was going to be sold as well. The latest rumors have Young going to Spurs for basically the pu pu platter of Jenas, Bentley, and more Spurs failures. I'd quit too if that was the case.

Yah, having to take on a boatload of Spurs failures could cause anyone to seriously consider quitting.

wow, last few years Villa got out ok and faltered in the latter months...this year they decide to just come out faltering. I checked with one person who said it was the lack of reinvestment but I still can't believe he would quit 5 days before the season starts.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I read through the VillaTalk forum to see what they are saying, and one of these guys who claims to be in the know on everything says that there were two deals on the table for Milner. One was 30m pounds in exchange for Milner - straight swap. The other was 15m pounds, plus Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onouha, and Michael Johnson. I guess Lerner was a fan of the first one, O'Neill wanted the 2nd, and they couldn't make any sort of agreement.

Edit: In related news, Bob Bradley is 2nd favorite to take over at 3-1 odds, with Jol at 5-2.

Here's hoping Bradley takes the job so we can get someone else for US Soccer?

I would say here's hoping Bradley gets the job to show that Americans can manage at that level while allowing the US to get some new blood in the program. I like Bradley and think he was good for US Soccer but I also don't think its the greatest idea for any coach to be in charge for more than one cycle.

As a Villa fan I think Bradley would send the wrong message to the existing players and anyone looking to join in the near future...not a knock on him per se, I just don't think this is a good time to bring in an inexperienced guy in this mess...the risk is too high

If it really is true that Lerner was trying to make moves over MON's head, then I can see why Bradley would be an attractive candidate.
I don't think calling him a "Yes man" is exactly the right words, but Bob certainly hasn't been one to air whatever disagreements he's had with Gulati in public.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

It is a consideration, but not that big of a deal. They do it here in Phoenix all summer in the D-backs stadium. I know people who, part of the reason they'll go to a D-backs game, is to be in the air-conditioned stadium. With a little marketing, it could be a solid plus in selling people on soccer in the summer.

I'm not worried about weather too much - Houston is plenty hot and humid, and they still draw pretty good crowds. A good outdoor stadium design with some roofs over the stands strategically placed to provide shade can help a great deal.

If a team can get and finance an air conditioned stadium, more power to them - I don't see that happening, however. Having a revenue-controlled stadium is a crucial element to any expansion bid now.

Yeah, more I think about it, probably to get the capital to fund a 30,000 seat enclosed stadium, they would likely need to partner with an university perhaps. Florida Atlantic or Florida International both come to mind for the Miami Area. Build it up to take on a category 5 Hurricane, and make it part of the Hurricane Evacuation plan, along with joint use with the university. Ideally, on land just adjacent to the school, and have the MLS group own it, so then they can sell 6 dollar bud lites to the crowd at both games.

Don't forget that the US plays tonight. On ESPN2 in a half hour.

Starters: Howard; Spector, Gonzalez, Bocanegra (c), Bornstein; Bedoya, Bradley, Edu, Feilhaber; Donovan, Buddle

Maybe a 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I see Brad Guzan is continuing the proud tradition of USA goalkeepers going bald at an early age. :D

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Glad the defense is in top for as usual

Was the first Brazilian goal within 15 minutes?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Landon Donovan should have had a penalty in the first 5 minutes. To me, that's why it's going to be very very tough to eradicate diving from the game. Landon gets fouled, stays on his feet, no penalty.

Man, Brazil's kids are good.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Hey, awesome, just what US Soccer needs, losing players to foreign countries because our immigration system is Byzantine and unnavigable:

That's stupid.

Not the Movsisyan/Soumare issue. The "let's blame this on immigration laws" BS. What a bunch of horse****. Yeah, let's just start letting in anyone and everyone just so we can have access to a half dozen more soccer players.

Is Ives retarded?
