UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Lowell Sun article on Melchiori.

"That happens," said UML coach Blaise MacDonald from Buffalo, N.Y., where he was waiting to catch a flight home yesterday after making a last-ditch attempt to convince Melchiori to play for the River Hawks. "You're never sure with the Canadian kids. Major Junior kills us because of all the NCAA rules. Michigan just lost three kids.

The River Hawks still have 10 incoming freshmen, and MacDonald said he will not try to fill Melchiori's vacant scholarship slot with another recruit this summer.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I am wondering if anyone knows where I could find year by year stats for all UML players. I have been able to find stats for some players but not entire rosters for each year. Thanks if anyone can help.

On Coach MacDonald not wanting to fill the spot, I think that makes sense. It's really late, I don't know the caliber of player that would be available. It does give him a chance to recruit a solid D next season.

He did bring Robo in around this time when Wally split for the NHL... but I assume they were in constant communication with Robo just in case.

But Robo was already committed for the following year so it was a matter of bringing him in ahead of schedule.

In this case, its better to keep it in hand than to rush out and get a player... if Melchiori was looking at a full ride then it just might be better to hold on to it to use as part of next year's cycle. Besides, I'm going to guess there's already a fair bit tied into this class. It may help in the class smoothing anyhow.

Exactly.

Agreed on all accounts.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Not sure if anyone caught this today, but it looks like the OHL is going to make a big push for River Hawk Robert Visca:

Was/Is he expected to make any impact after redshirting all last year?
The Sudury Wolves (OHL) have made their pitch to Robert Visca. The Wolves are hoping he will join the team, their training camp begins on 9/1/10.

Smith said the Wolves have been speaking with Barrie native Robert Visca, a 19-year-old forward obtained from Saginaw, in return for the rights to Brandon Pirri. Visca scored 45 goals in two seasons of provincial Junior Hockey with Orangeville, but did not see any game action during the 2009-10 season. Visca accepted a scholarship from the University of Massachusetts Lowell last summer.

"We've made our pitch and presentation to the player, his parents and agent," Smith said. "At this point, there is still hope that he will come." Smith noted a final decision from Visca might not come until just days before the team opens training camp.

I forgot the rules from my literature class at UML; does the season have to start to declare it it a Greek tragedy and Coach as an Aristotlic hero? This is getting to the point that it's so sad it's actually funny if you know what I mean.

There's really one answer to this. Beer. Lots of it.

On this one, I can't blame Visca. He didn't get the chance to play last year even though the team couldn't score. Just doesn't seem to be a part of Coach's plans.

I agree. It will be interesting to see if Visca comes back.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

I would give Scott a call. Based on the 3 payment options on the season ticket application, you should have received an invoice by now.

Traded emails with Scott on the weekend and I'm all set.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new and improved Tsongas. I know Lowell is going to be fighting for 7th/8th place this season so any improvement is good with me!
