UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

The Sudury Wolves (OHL) have made their pitch to Robert Visca. The Wolves are hoping he will join the team, their training camp begins on 9/1/10.

Robert Visca leaves UML and signs with the Sudbury Wolves (OHL). Someone missed the bus on this one.

Visca, a 5-11, 190 lbs forward, spent two seasons playing with the Orangeville Crushers Junior A team before accepting a full hockey scholarship at the University of Lowell-Mass in Massachusetts. This summer, the 19-year-old Everett, Ont. native opted to sign with the Wolves and continue his studies at Laurentian University.

If my math is correct, that would put the the roster at 27, which includes Badger and McCoy.

Wasn't he redshirting?

I'm not sure. I believe Blaise said he wasn't redshirting during one of his radio shows last season. He wasn't playing because he couldn't crack the lineup. Either way, it doesn't matter now.

I was actually talking to Gary about this one last night, without knowing he'd left. I really question why Coach brought in Visca last year if he wasn't ready (and I'm assuming a coach doesn't need to see him at practice to know he's not). Why not let him stay in juniors for another year (or two) and then come in, since the kid was young when he came in. Then not using a redshirt year on the kid ... I'm thoroughly NOT surprised that he chose to leave.

Funny as wasn't the intent to redshirt another player?

As to bringing him in early... it could just be that they got the wrong read on a player and they promised him to come in early as opposed to letting him get taken up by another school. I'm not sure what happens when you just tell a player to hold off for another year.

I still wonder about these players though... if you can't crack a line-up then what does that really say about your pro potential... seeing as you'll only have a single year of MJ left.

There's obviously something amiss here but the departure doesn't surprise me at all. To bring a kid into the mix and not play him is one thing. To not redshirt him is another and raises more questions than give answers. You're asking a kid during the prime of his amateur career to be a benchwarmer for one to two years or take a chance at major junior...that's a no brainer to me.

Seeing two recruits take off less than two months away from opening night in a rebuilding year is not what the doctor ordered, whether if it was controllable or not. You have to guess the rest of HE is going to use this to their advantage.

My worry is also on the recruiting side. The hockey world (especially D1 recruitable kids) is small. If Visca's unhappy with his tenure here, or his parents are, and they start talking, it could affect future recruits.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Scott Wilson has 2 assists in the 2 (of his team's 4) preseason games he's played for Georgetown. Can't believe these seasons are starting already.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Just spent some quality time wading through the cesspool that is the Hockey East thread. Figured I'd throw my point predictions out there and start it up:

BC 0-3-0
BU 1-2-0
ME 0-2-1
MC 1-1-1
NU 1-1-1
PC 1-2-0
UNH 1-1-1
UMA 2-0-1
UVM 1-1-1

8-13-6 = 21 pts

Overall HE

1. BC
2. Maine
3. BU
4. MC
5. UNH
6. NU
7. UVM
8. UML
9. PC
10. UMA

These predictions are based on nothing more than my acknowledgment of two key facts:

1. Lowell is going be...how to say this with tact...dreadful.
2. BC is going to murder anyone and everyone who has the audacity to skate on the same ice as them.

Everything else is merely a guess.

Nice math there genius. 16+6=22, not 21...

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Has anyone seen the new seating charts? It looks like they are using a numbering system now instead of letters. Section 101 is where section H is currently and moves clockwise around the arena from there. The new seating chart is not in the construction photo gallery but in the photo gallery with the proposed changes when they were first made public.

no, that's not confusing at all

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

apparenty a number system is easier for concert seating and stuff so they are using it overall...

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

Funny to see on Merrimack site, biggest discount ticket nights are for lowell games ($5 for local kids), last game of their season against Providence tickets for $1 in advance. ouch.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

BC 0-3-0 (BC's overall HE record 20-5-2)
BU 0-3-0
Maine 1-2-0
UMA 2-1-0
Merrimack 0-2-1
UNH 1-1-1
NU 1-1-1
PC 1-1-1
UVM 1-1-1

On paper, 7-15-5 (19 pts) :(

Hey, that's why they play the games.

As far as rankings..

BC, UNH, ME, BU, MC, NU, UVM, UML, PC, UMA

BC will be in first wire-to-wire
UNH second....reverse psychology....every time I put these saps lower, they win HE or finsih second, goalie is the key.
ME/BU battles for third/fourth
MC/NU/UVM battles for fifth to seventh.
UMA/PC/UML battles for the final playoff spot.

Re: UML offseason looking towards 2010/11 season

The UML athletic season officially opened yesterday with both soccer teams in action. The women's team played to a 0-0 draw with CW Post, the Men's team lost 1-0 to Dowling. The field hockey team hosts Mansfield today at 1:00 pm.

ive been reading this back and forth all summer long you guys look at it as a disappointing year but even with a young team we have the talent to be a good team this year. We were good against BC last year beating them twice so expect a win. Also expect a win against BU. No way were beating Maine this year they have such an offensive threat. MC is good team i feel we will fall short in both games we lose and take one. UNH always a good team we can snag a game there. I feel we can beat both PC and NU twice and tie at least once. We will take 2 in Vermont at the end of the year pushing for the playoffs they will be in 8th. UMA is a joke. Cant wait we are about a month away. I am excited for the new arena!

Other than the Big Four, there is no reason why this year's team can't be in the middle of the pack. Certainly, the upperclassmen as a whole have to step it up several notches from some of the play during the previous season. The big questions are the #5/6 D-paring and goaltending. With the recent departure of a freshman that was scheduled to fill a big void and unknowns in net, it's very hard to justify even a .500 season in a league where the margin of error is that small.

As I mentioned, let's give them the first month. In the end, this team will go as far as their young goaltending and defense will take them.
