University of Maine athletic department receives an additional gift of $80 million from the Alfond Foundation. They must think the department is heading in the right direction.

LOL...you think? This will put athletic facility improvements over the $200 million mark. Brand new pics of Alfond addition and renovations if you follow "more details" link in release....it's gonna be sweet!

I believe that money can only be used for facility improvements. Not salary.

Good catch. That's still a heckuva lot less money the university would need to contribute to any of these big projects, so maybe it frees up some funds they might have had earmarked for them.

Question of the day for you old timers. As much fun to watch Breen, Nadeau and Nadeau as it was to watch Kariya, Montgomery and Ingraham ?

Not even close. While I like this team, 92-93 was a different level. First the talent on that team was off the charts but top that off with winning every tourney they played in was so special. It was a different time. Maine hockey was “it” all over the state. Heck the Boston Globe had more coverage for Maine Hockey than it did for bc and bu put together. It was the most fun you can have with your pants on. ; )

Wally, I'm shocked and speechless :-)

I don’t think the opex budget has included any money for facility improvements in recent times so not sure there is any impact there. Hopefully having nicer facilities improves game day revenue but I still think they have a problem without more money from donations.

So, what you're saying here (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that, if Barr (the proven winner), who has now proven he can turn around a nowhere program as a Head Coach and not just as an assistant, misses out via upset on either the HEA semis or qualifying for the NCAA's, that should be used against him, to "cool his jets" for a more significant raise, until he actually accomplishes these things he should be achieving this season, at some future date?!? And he should just sit there and accept it, even if he now knows the fair market value for his services in D-1 has probably already (at least) doubled since he signed his deal in Orono???

Loyalty is a two way street, and here we're talking about a guy who has not hesitated to move on from several prior stops, despite the rampant success that's always broken out in his wake. He came to UMaine because someone (no longer associated with the school) showed belief in him doing the big job, and he has delivered to exceed all expectations. If the current UMaine AD is thinking in any way along the lines you are, it will be a rude awakening when Barr finds more respect AND a bigger paycheck elsewhere, and takes his golden eggs with him.

You guys cannot sit idly by if/when UMaine decides to wrest defeat from the jaws of victory, all because of loopy half-baked logic that Barr needs to be "fair" to other USM employees, none of whom are drawing additional millions into the USM coffers due to their non-unique and easily replaceable talents in the classroom or elsewhere on campus ...

Half a season of beating up on Atlantic hockey and low end EZAC teams and you’re ready to back up the brinks truck? Regardless of what happens this season for me the real test is what Barr can do once the team is mostly his. Almost two thirds of the goals this year have come from Red’s players and most of the goaltending as well.

I think for continuity sake Maine should try to keep Barr but if he wants to leave only so much they can do. If Greg Moore were to replace Barr perhaps that wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world anyway.

What does this mean? Can you speak English please?

Lol, which bit are you confused by? All I’m saying is that in theory if Maine has nicer facilities more people should go and therefore make more money which can be put towards operating expenses. But I think whatever marginal amount of revenue they receive might not be able to offset loss of revenue the AD receives from the school/system and there will need to be revenue from some other source to bridge the gap.

Be honest, did Barr used to date your wife or something? You have this bizarre hate for the guy who has resurrected Maine hockey.

I understood the first part....thanks for clarifying the rest. Only you could poop on a day that UMaine Athletics receives an $80 million gift....congrats!

News Flash - regardless of recruiting cycles, the current UMaine team IS Barr's team, in his 3rd year as head coach. Exactly one (1) person is looking at this differently, as if Red (RIP) would have been able to coach the same level of success out of the same players - assuming they all decided to stay committed to Orono, which became a much easier commitment for them all to keep once they heard Barr was on his way, and had this D-1 winning pedigree on top of that. The idea that UMaine would be a #1 PWR team if Red were still in charge is laughable.

This goes back to my original point ... if you take what he's done for granted, someday you're liable to wake up to news that Barr has taken his talents elsewhere. This is a guy who was rejected for not being experienced enough by his own alma mater. So there's a decent chance that if he finishes the rebuild in Orono, and settles in with his young family in the Downeast, where he is treated like a prince by appreciative folks, this guy who has never so much as interviewed with an NHL organization, and has landed in your lap out of a fair amount of good fortune, he might actually stay long-term, and you all get to enjoy Walshy 2.0 - perhaps even longer if his health and pay are both good.

If your Plan B is Greg Moore ... what evidence do you have that he's going to be a successful D-1 head coach? Or that he even wants to be a D-1 head coach, as opposed to taking another NHL/AHL job??

I know you have contrarian tendencies, but this is a little bit crazytown, even by your standards Drew.
