UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

Sloppy game and I'm sure Colgate is a decent team but they had the puck luck tonight and maine needs to pull their heads out of their ass especially the first line

I thought the Scott line was the only one going tonight. I think Maine misses Renwick more than people realise. Add to that Arnott and Lesakowski out too, and Maine are down to 6D. If I were the coaches, I would be worried about depth.

I thought Maine actually came out as the better team. Ostman just didn’t have it tonight and I thought after getting the lead, Colgate played a good game clogging up passing lanes and being opportunistic with their scoring chances.

Real gutsy tie tonight from Maine. Clutch goal by Scholle and very timely goals by Freel at the end of the second. Boija played great.

One observation is that Maine’s top line has seemed a bit stale recently. Maine is really getting a lot of production from the secondary sources and all lines can really apply good pressure.

I know that the NB line has been great for much of the year but Breen seemed to have been more of a goal scoring threat last year and I’m wondering if he would be more effective on a line with Houle and Freel? I would put Scott centering the Nadeaus. You might find some more chemistry and keep other teams from matching lines as much, especially on the road. What do people think?

Final observation: power play needs more movement (and scoring). Too much stationary passing. I’m glad they seem to have gotten rid of the back pass breakout. It is effective for a lot of teams but Maine could never really get the timing down and I think they have better entries now.

Will be a very tough road test next weekend at UConn.

Go Blue

Yeh, like the idea Pudge of putting Scott up front with the Nads. There is enough speed on that line without Breen being on it and Scott seems to have found a scoring touch . Breen centering the second line would make it even more dynamic.

Colgate did what they had to do to make it close...trap and trap and trap. Fugly hockey but ....was amazed Maine came back from 3-1 deficit and 4-3 deficit to get the tie out of it. And then Brad and Josh making the shootout look like childs play. Ultimately a little slap in the face from Colgate will be good for these guys. You cant win them all because of that target on your back.

And ahhh, yeah, Boooyaaah !!

I got to say being in Alfond again was a lot of fun. Need to get some more tickets for some HE games. Place reminded me of the old
days instead of the morgue it’s been for many seasons.

So after witnessing 3 on 3 OT....and the shootout......hated it. I say 5 on 5 OT and it ends in a tie....period. What is the point of the shootout? It did showcase the Nadeau Bros. stick handling and shooting skills.....I guess it is for the fans because I find it absolutely pointless....literally and figuratively.

And yeah....Breen and the Nadeaus need to be broken up. Breen in particular has been frustrated for numerous games now.....you can see it in his body language.

To come back and not lose, with the not Nadeau lines doing the damage, thats what good teams do. Love to see it.

Dont think the 2nd and 3rd lines should change, their doing great. 4th line needs help. Renwick is missed, not sure where he fits in best now.
Problem right now with the NB line is teams are onto the bros methods and their getting pushed around pretty easy. Breen is the work horse of that line and makes gritty plays to get things going. Not sure what line Breen would go to anyway, he is the best player on the team. Instead of moving breen, that line needs to adapt, if they cant then their skill set is currently a bit limited. The bros are freshmen, they still have some stuff to learn and to get stronger, it will come, expectations are too high maybe.
The season 2nd half will be interesting as good teams solidify their standing.
Easy for me to say cause I dont really know much anyway.

Colgate knocked the crap out of josh both nights. He got a hit from behind on friday that could have been 5 and got no whistle from the refs. Its a wonder he didnt get a concussion out of it. Hopefully barr sends that video to league

I didn’t see either game this weekend and the one question I have is why didn’t Maine blow Colgate away in the third after tying the game at the end of the second period? I figured it would end 6-3 or 6-4 after those two goals.

I see the last six games as a major warning sign. The good Maine teams of the past might have had trouble in maybe one or two of them but would have comfortably won the rest. Hopefully they can fix whatever is wrong because the next 16 games are going to be much more difficult than the last six.

Colgate got a goal instantly to start the third period and momentum shifted.

Colgate is a big team and I hesitate to use the word dirty but there was some questionable hits going on all weekend. Rouillard the ref seemed to only call ticky tack stuff and let some of the bigger ones go.

Big issue Saturday night was the NB line was too busy chasing the puck. Breen only won 6 of his 29 faceoffs, which is abysmal. That line doesn't really have the size to muscle teams off the puck, so getting possession early in their shifts is important. Definitely wouldn't make a panic move to split that trio but maybe there need to be situations where Scott gets shifts with the bros to ensure Maine is getting possession (powerplays would make sense because you can utilize 4 forwards).

You can always experiment a little with line shuffling...no harm done. Lines can always be reunited. Shuffling some lines sometimes energizes the players. I believe that top line needs a little physical presence with size but of course will always defer to the Barr meister.

I just don't think I've seen enough from that line to be worried yet.

Maybe if they were all mired in some deep scoring slump but Breen still has more multi-point games than games where he's been held off the scoresheet.

It was pretty clear from the jump on Friday that Colgate's plan was to neutralize them as much as possible and that trio still generated 16 SOG over the weekend.

Keep it status quo...except again go with Bojia on Friday and if he plays good to great then put him back in net Saturday afternoon...but looks like a tandem situation till the end of the season OR...until either takes hold of the #1 stopper...need a healthy Renwick back...

Bojia could be the difference maker down at UConn. Anyone know why they are playing these games at the Hartford Civic Center?
