Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Great start to the weekend. Would love to hear an assessment of the D from someone who was there. Finally clamping down and changing styles for the better?

Have to hand it to Whitehead for timing the timeout on the late 5x3 the way he did.

Great win. It's time for some of the nay-sayers man up and give Maine some credit. I know it hasn't happened often, but at least on this night, we beat a top 5 team, something that many said we simply couldn't do. I have to also say this: Isn't it great to see the mighty BC program and their seemingly endless gravy train of goaltenders, Clemmensen-Schneider-Muse, finally struggle!

Clamping down? I hardly think so, BC toyed with them at times. This has to be the worst group of Dmen with the puck in their own end I've ever seen, they don't know which way is north south, they only know east west. Watching them play hot potato with the puck and coughing it up time after time is very frustrating.

I thought the game was over when BC got the 2 goal lead early but Gravel giveth and Gravel taketh away. Maine started to play when that goal got waved off. Beatties goal was a thing of beauty, you could see it in his eyes, he had it all the way. Mangene carried the puck all night, nice spin orama. Joey missed an open top shelf but it was a tough shot, he was POed though. Shemansky almost won it in regulation, but Venti got there a nano second before Adam did.

Not a great game like we used to see between BC and Maine but it was a great win for Maine. BC has way more talent than Maine, its easy to see but I don't think this is a great BC team unless a goalie steps up?

Nice to See Murray and to finally meet the infamous 5Hole:)

Dmen did have their problems but the 2-man forecheck by BC was awesome, so let's give them some credit. Once they got the lead they dropped the forecheck and it cost them. May have been the turning point of the game and a mistake by Jerry.

do it twice AND take one from BU or it was just a case of facing Venti...

If Maine wins tonight, or loses by only one goal, AND if Maine wins ONE next week, then I think there some of us who have to rethink our positions. (of course, if BC finishes the season at 15, then Maine will not have really beaten a top 5 team... just a .500ish team that was ranked high in the polls based on history)...look at how UMass has fared against them this year

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

You are right for the most part of the 1st period Maine played awful in their own end and especially behind there net,BC played tenacious checking in Maine's end and had many chances to turn the game into a rout...big no goal call on the 2nd BC goal...if that one stays on the board then Maine's a goner...like 6-0....Pryor/Hegarty had tough times all night....Rutt looks to be a player, like his style and he's not afraid to mix it up....nothing fancy/gets the job done....nice to see the Building erupt on the Maine goals...and better yet sending BC down with a Sudden Death Marker(Mangene Blast...!!)...good 2 points to start the weekend off...now to get ready for Saturday. Go Maine...!

I Like Rutt's passing, very crisp, catches and passes in one motion and puts it on the tape.
Anyone else notice Abbott's stellar passing last night?
and the Mangene goal was set up by a

DROP PASS/screen.

gosh, I remember the time Jankus scored on one of those in what... 2005?
it works guys, use it... and drop it to the forehand side when you do use it

I don't remember anyone saying that couldn't beat a top 5 team at HOME, its the road where they had real struggles over the past 5 years or so. Its was a good win, no doubt, lot of fun to finally leave Alfond happy against a good BC team. Tonight will tell us alot and next weekend is crucial

As far as the 2 man forecheck goes, agreed it was good, but they had time to chip it up and out but instead fiddled and diddled until it was too late. When Kreider is in your zone, you best get it out of the zone or your going to give up some shots on Sully at the very least.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I thought BC looked very fast and very big, beating Maine to most loose pucks and creating one turnover after another with their forecheck. Obviously they'd been briefed on our d's inability to cleanly break out the puck. Sully was on his game and even after BC forecheck stole the puck, our forwards quickly got back and helped keep BC's scoring opportunities from getting too out of hand, so it didn't hurt us as much as it might have. I also thought that Maine competed hard all night and it was GREAT to see that for a change! Venti didn't look bad but he isn't a Clemmenson yet either. I don't have tix for this afternoons game but hope that the Bears can continue last nights intensity and weather the early storm, discourage and dishearten BC, and pull out another one. Really nice to hear the noise level at the Alfond back where it belongs! Our players deserve to be proud of what they did last night, they deserved the win. This afternoon is their chance to make a real statement!

I've long been of the opinion that this team, and for the last couple years, is good enough to play with the big boys, but so far, hasn't. So a win like last night begs the question: why don't they perfoirm like that more often?

Maybe it was just a case of playing a third string goalie. We'll see. Still doesn't make TIMMAY anythig more than a mediocre coach.

And wish he'd put Rutt and O'Connor in the lineup together, intead of either one or the other. Sit one of the other underperfoirming d-men, like Hegarty or Pryor. Give them the wake-up that ap[parently Shemansky and Beattie have gotten.

This! So far so good tonight. Let's hope its not a peak like the Merrimack sweep last year....the key is finding a way to keep it going.

First sweep over BC since 2006....only the third sweep of a fellow "Big 4" team in 8 seasons.

Wow......a Timmay coached team sweeping a York team....How bad must BC suck this year? :D

I expect to see Manges up for player of the week, what a great weekend for him.

Its Mangene.....and he's been on the cusp of greatness for his entire career. Maybe it sticks, who knows.

whata you say we even this out? 4pts this weekend, 0pts next? ;) :D

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

WOW - Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would pull off the sweep, even going into the 3rd with a one goal lead. What makes college hockey so great, is that a team like BC, with superior size, speed, and overall skill, can still go down based on a fearsome Maine power play, and sketchy BC goaltending. You know you're in trouble in the net when you start a kid from Brunswick, Maine. One other observation - why on earth would Jewy pull a goaltender with over 2 mins left, and down by only a goal? Huge mistake and it cost him.

Certainly didn't look much like the BC teams of the past I've come to know and hate.
