UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I think everyone needs to take a step back for a minute. Benedetto's mother passed away yesterday morning. Wouldn't surprise me if Whitehead knew that and decided it wasn't a great time to rip on the call.

honestly, then he really should not have been reffing the game.

there are plenty of other Hockey East refs who could have done this game, and there are plenty of linesmen who could have put on the orange stripes and had a junior's official work lines.... frankly Beneddo could have given his stripes to one of the linesmen to take some of the burden off his shoulders.... he made his $275...

if he IS going to do the game, then he needs to be treated the same.
Benedetto was also one of the 2 who blew the call at the garden when Lowell scored against BU in the finals... and you know what... Blais, the former head coach at Lowell McDonald told me right after it happened that Bunyan was a good guy too... who cares?

I know a million people who all say that Hache is the best guy you are ever gonna meet.... luckily he was shown the door by the NHL, the AHL AND hockey east.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

While watching college hockey recently I witnessed the "intent to blow the whistle" on two difference occasions in the same weekend where goals were disallowed. In one game it made no difference but the other was a different story. The announcers question what had happened and the chief of officials called in saying that was the on ice ruling.

ref a game and you will understand what it means... that is all i can tell ya...
once a ref loses sight of the puck, the play is dead...

what are you gonna call if a goalies is lieing on the puck, face down.
your hand is going up to your mouth to blow the whistle while Joey Diamond is jabbing at the goalie's belly, and he knocks the puck into the net JUST before you blow the whistle, but in that 1/3 of a second that you were bringing your hand up, joey gets his stick on it and it goes in... is it really stupid that it is no goal? I mean the goalie clearly had it covered up for 1/3 of a second, but the whistle failed to be blown...

stupid? really?
I say no goal... and I have reffed for 20 years and I have seen that happen at least once a month.

Amazingly quick whistle was in the Ref's head......the goalie was still scrambling for the puck and not in any danger of being run over or someone in his crease.

Nice quick whistles on those icing calls as well. I guess non of those refs are being considered for the next level. Time for a change........bring in some youth that can keep up with the play and be in the right position. The game has changed ............

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Abbott says in todays paper that he heard the whistle before he shot the puck, no goal. He says the whistle shouldn't have blown and that he thinks Benedetto was out of position but thats beside the point, whistle blew, no goal

It's very simple why those calls go against Maine far more than they go for them. Ref's go with quick whistles around Cannata because they know Dennehey has coached his D to take out any opposing player that even looks at him..they want to prevent a scrum -- or worse.. But when a Maine goalie ties it up, the refs can wait as long as they want because Timmay has coached the D to be pacifists, to never be impolite to the opposing players coming near your goalie, and get to the bench as quickly as possible when the whistle is blown. You know.....buzzer hockey.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Not trying to be an AH here, but does anyone seriously think that Maine's season would wind up differently if that goal was called good..?

Last I checked, Maine was buried deep in the PW, and has a brutal schedule ahead.

I'm planning to go to Miami (FL) for the Regionals. :p

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

In todays BDNews, they talk about shaking up the lines on Saturday...AND TW even had the thought of moving a D-man to Forward(Rutt)...I mean come on again...Rutt is a D-man plain and simple and can be a top one at that in time...but there's TW going with a move that has NOT worked before...I can see changing lines but imo Rutt is suited best as a defenseman.

I wonder if Cindy Blodgett has any NCAA elligibility left, maybe Tim can bring her back and try her out at forward.

or maybe he needs Madame Zarushka to do another reading on the tea leaves

If, and this is a big if, but if Maine had started the "brutal" 6-game schedule 1-1 as opposed to 0-1-1...yeah it makes a difference. If Maine finishes 5th by a point? Team needs home ice to get to the Garden, I think we can all agree on that. So yeah that could definitely change the outcome of the season from blown out on the road to maybe getting to Boston.

For the can't root for the team to lose camp....that matters. And yeah logically I'd agree that getting to the Garden A) doesn't constitute a successful season and B) is no lock. Having said that, as a fan, I'd like to have a reason to go and cheer on the laundry that Friday in March.

I guess it matters to Pairwise but at this point not sure how much(the rest of this month will tell us that) but it definitely matters in HE standings. Win 2 out the next 4 then that game matters other wise, .....................

Elligibility no...but maybe we can try her out as the hockey coach! Couldn't be any worse!

I don't see this team (under Tim) getting out of the HEA tournament, home-ice or not... And the only hope they have for a NCAA berth is to win-out in Boston, which is simply unrealistic, IMO.

(Where did all the talk about an after-the-New-Year-buyout go?)

I think the "BUY-OUT" part was meant for after this season is finished...they the University and AD Abbott would never go through with that during a season(imo)...I think that and again(imo)that this gets a look see after the season is done...one way or another. I see a outside chance that they host in the QF's,but they'll need a hot streak,Hockey East #4 thru #8 can change each weekend...but getting in the NC$$'s is more or less they have to win it outright in Boston in mid-March and get a Auto-Bid...I don't see any of that happening. Tough weekend of games @ Home vs BC...I can't see a Jerry York team NOT ready this weekend.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

You mean a rumor started by an internet crazy?, where do you think it went?

It's not a rumor and I'm not an Internet Crazy. The post below is correct: the buyout clause is for the end of the season. I realize many of you want blood, but do you think a coach or AD is going to put a buyout clause in a contract for the middle of the season?

Which reminds me: how many of you have actually contacted AD Abbott or President Ferguson?

As for the goal against Merrihack and what it means for the team's NCAA chances...Maine is now T23 in the PWR. They would be sitting at #18 in the PWR if the goal has stood. These games can mean quite a bit in the rankings. In 2010, if Gustav Nyquist hits the empty net at UHN the Black Bears would have been in the playoffs.

UMaine can still get rid of him and pay him money.
no clause is necessary, every contract has an implicit buy out clause.

Except implicit buyout clauses, with the negotiations of a buyout amount and the possible litigation, are prohibitively more expensive. It's good to have a dollar sign on what it would cost to get rid of Whitehead, as opposed to the protracted drama of trying to figure one out with him or winding up in court.

I guess, but there is no litigation if the state just pays him the full amount. he has no damages if he is paid in full... the buyout clause MIGHT be... if we decide to smarten up and tell you to take a hike, we pay you 50% of your contract, UNTIL you get paid by another team... or something like that ....

worse yet, the buy out might be a golden parachute, stating that he gets a million dollars if they show him the door prior to 2012

anyway... so how about them bears?
