Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Benedetto need to be raked over the coals, a goal mouth scrum and hes off to the side?? He needs to watch those NHL refs who are behind the net with their hands on the back bar watching everything. I believe that is Maines third goal disallowed and they are all against Abbott lol he has to be fuming.

Diamond I thought had a tough game, 3 times tn twice with Abbott and once with Flynny, they are wide open banging their stick for a pass and his head is down just charging for the net.

I don't understand how this late in the season it is and they are horrible at bringing the puck out of the zone, always fumbling the puck and turning back into the zone.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

Thought Matt Mangene had an excellent game.

Really? Besides flying around the ice and a couple spin-o-ramas, which gets the crowd excited, I don't think he's done much. I throw him right behind Beattie as 2 of the most disappointing players this year. 2 juniors who need to be counted on for secondary scoring and neither has done much.

Yes, I saw his nice work on one PK tonight and realize he can lug the puck from end to end but this guy needs to produce points for Maine to win.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

I can't hope for them to lose, just can't do it.

I can't either.

I still want the current crop of kids to feel relevant, and for them to hear the Alfond going crazy, if that even happens anymore.

At the same time, every loss that Maine suffers would seem to move the program closer to getting rid of the very stale TW regime... That's a good thing at this point. ("Loss/win".)

It's pretty clear that Tim is not going to mastermind a way to get the Bears out of the hole he's dug for them. If anything, he's just making it a steeper climb to respectability with every futile, passing year during which he hangs around, spinning his wheels.

I used to say to all my sports-nuts friends that I'd rather watch a regular season Maine hockey game than to have a 50-yard seat at the Super Bowl, and I meant it... These days, I just check in once in a while online on game night, or even long afterwards, because I'd rather go somewhere and watch a local D-3 or HS team compete hard, than to see whatever Tim puts on the ice, dressed-up as Maine hockey.

This situation has shot a big hole in my Winter travels, but at least it's freed me up to get to the gym more. Not a bad deal, in the net.

I agree, he needs to ditch the spin-o-rama 3 times tn and once or twice yesterday. Hes skates from end to end but then can't find the tape of a team mate. Once he gets it in the zone which he does beautifully, he needs to slow it down and wait for a guy to hit, not just go wide on the d, cut in and throw a backhand everytime.

Will seemed to be fighting it again tn too, I hope he gets his confidence back, because when hes playing his best hes a good offensive threat!

I said excellent game not excellent season. He logged a ton of minutes, played in every situation and skated hard. Tons of effort plays, clearing pucks by sticking with them, really good on the forecheck. Maine needs more of that.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

This was the first time in a number of years I did not make the trip to Merrimack. I did not realize it was on tv (WBIN) until half way through the 1st period. I flipped back and forth between the Maine game and the NFL game. In the past, the NFL would have been an after thought if Maine was on tv.

When I did watch the game, I saw Mangene carry the puck from end to end a lot but with little offensive result. I will take someone being able to do that over passes which could be intercepted and go the other way. Further, I was just happy he was not on defense. The last time I went to a game at Merrimack, Timmay had him on D and Cornell at F. It was brutal (7 or 8 to 1) and was the only Maine game I ever left early.

I could not tell if the whistle was blown before the puck went in the net. Unfortunately, it was blown at all because the replay showed the puck was still lose. Those are the breaks and it sucks as a Maine fan. That being said, I think what has bothered me since things have gone wrong at Maine over the past 5 years is the apparent lack of passion from Timmay behind the bench. The coverage of the game showed Bennedetto go over to Tim to explain the goal being disallowed after the replay review. Tim looked like an employee taking instruction from a supervisor rather than a leader advocating for his team. I realize Bennedetto already made the call but why not make a scene and get the gate? Show your players and fans who question you that you care. I thought the same think when Flynn got tossed against BU. If your captain gets the gate for a BS call, get tossed with him.

I realize that Timmay will never display that type of emotion. I hope the next coach will.

Dear Coach Whitehead,
I think the time has come to remove your skirt and show some fu#$%^ ball$. The loyal fans of Maine Hockey (and I'm sure your team) are sick and tired of you not having the guts to stand up to the refs. Over the passed couple of years your team has been hosed by more bad calls than any other team in the HE. The Hockey East ref own you. Its embarassing. Its called gamesmanship. Whether you agree with the call or not youre supposed to let the refs "hear it" so next time they think twice about the call they're making. Not to mention, I'm sure your players would like to see you stand up for them from time to time. For Christ's sake, show that you have a pulse. You seem like a very nice guy with not one bad bone in his body; Which is fine. But unfortunately those qualities alone dont seem to be winning hockey games. This is fu@#$% hockey. This is Maine fu#$%^ hockey. Start acting like it.

Timmay doesn't care he is just collecting a paycheck.

Re: UMaine, 2011-2012 season thread, does anyone care anymore?

FWIW O'Neill tweeted that he thought the puck hit the bar and came out, so that's why he fired it down. Which even though the red light came on does make sense since the refs opted to review the goal. Also said he linesman knew it and told the ref to no avail.

I was behind the Maine bench and Benedetto looked like he was going to cry when he came over. I think he realized he completely bottled it. I thought Maine played great last night and was bitterly unlucky not to get the win. The call on diamond that lead to Merrimack's leveler was completely ridiculous, he was fighting to stay onside and they call a penalty on him. One thing I did notice the whole night was the all the coaches and players were talking a lot on the bench and seemed pretty fired up. Hopefully we see more of the same the rest of the way and if we do there is no doubt good things will come from it.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I thought that is why the review took so long...it looked to me like Benedetto knew as soon as he saw the inital replay that he screwed up and was trying to find some view that he could hang his hat on and call it a goal.

You should know the answer to that question.

No I really don't get your point.

Are you saying because he's a cop he's immune to criticism as a ref? I didn't realize that. Is Hache an EMT? Bunyon an Army vet? I honestly had no idea what he does/did for a living outside Hockey East and it doesn't alter my opinion of his buffoonery yesterday one iota.

There probably should be a bit more leeway in the rule. I haven't seen a replay but I'm pretty positive that if/when the whistle was blown it didn't affect the outcome of the play.

In any case, it doesn't change the fact that Maine played great last night. I think ditching Andersson and Leidermark made a really positive difference. The freshmen all looked good. We haven't quite seen the end product that we would like from them yet but it is going to come. I thought Rutt looked good last night too and would like to see a rotation of him and O'Conner.

Thats why Timmay should have thrown a hissy fit, he might get a call his way next time.Obviously a replay is a replay and Bendetto has to call it from the tape but other calls not so.

I like Rutt also, he actually hits people, probably why he doesn't play

Do you ever post without making an excuse for why Maine loss?

He shouldn't have to. The fact that the fans are constantly having to justify losses means something is seriously wrong.

Whitehead will never show emotion on the bench and as a result the players won't on the ice.

Maine has become an also-ran who only beats sub-.500 teams and every fan should be outraged.
