UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Dowd did a feign or curl, he made like he was going back up ice and curled back up to cover the guy open (not really open, only looked that way to the passer until it was too late) on the far side.
Too me that is the definition of anticipation.

If the passee had anticipated what Dowd was doing and cut to the middle to shorten the pass or the passer would have been a little more patient (passee would have been behind him) Dowd would have been burned.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Looking at the lines if I were Motzko I would try to match up Murray-Dowd-Brodzinski with Rau-Bjugstad-Condon anytime possible. I don't think Hano or Kossila can match speed or tenacity. Murray would cancel Condons speed and Brodz can easily handle Rau. Dowd and Bjugs would be even. That would leave Hano-Leblanc-Kosilla against Warning -Haula- Budish and would be great to watch. The unanswered would be if Oliver is back or how we match the 3rd and 4th lines.

Piece of cake.
Nothings a piece of cake, I was just looking at obvious matchup issues. I think someone mentioned moving Morley back to center for faceoffs. I have a feeling Motz and tDon are going to be doing a lot of tinkering or not releasing lineups till really late.
According to Mick Hatten's online chat both Oliver and Rabey will be out again this week.

You are right. Motzko refused to say that he used the dirty word "trap." But they did implement a defensive scheme that many might consider a hybrid. Trapping teams do not typically put 30 shots on goal in a game.

Agreed. Forgot how sensitive some people get over the "T" word. :)

Maybe it would be better to describe it as playing conservative offensively. Either way, it worked, and worked well. I just don't think SCSU will play the same way this weekend.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

According to Motzko on his radio show they trapped a lot against BSU instead of aggressively forechecking. You think that will be their approach against the Gophers? I don't see that happening.

Is it a record to score 8 goals playing a trap? Playing good defense isn't playing a trap.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

1. The channel is hard to find
2. It is not in HD

SCSU doesn't have their games in HD either, but that is a student-run broadcast. I was looking forward to being able to watch my team in HD.

I admit that I had problems finding it the first time, but since then, it's been the same channel every time.... and in HD. I don't know what you get for cable service, but I know in the cities, any system that you can get FSN in HD will have an alternate channel available for FSN+ HD

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Since the Wild are getting stomped 4-0 and they did a nice promo for the MN/SCSU game I went and checked out the BSU Fri game again - DVR. In both cases the BSU player just made a really bad decision to make a complete cross ice (80 foot) pass right to our players. In both cases the BSU receiver was doing a regroup and had their back partially to the D so they went wide and didn't support the middle, if either would have cut to the middle to shorten the pass or come to the puck they might have broken the plays up.
There was an aggressive forecheck by both teams and we had actually overpursued on both plays- the guys on the puck. Both forechecks had generated 3-4 quality chances for each team. Everyone back had taken a man - I didn't see any type of formation unless you say a 1-1-2-1 that went to a 2-3 and a 4-1 on the attack is some kind of trapping system.

Motzko's words:

"Bemidji likes to throw bomb passes"...."So we kept players back behind the play. ... We wanted to play a patient series.""

Call it whatever you want. It's a stupid thing to argue about and you're being FAR too sensitive. They didn't forecheck as aggressively as they usually do. They played conservatively offensively. They held guys back. Call it a passive trap, or just conservative play. I don't care either way.

And by the way, the Pittsburgh Penguins trap quite a bit. Would you call them a low scoring team? Every team traps from time to time. Number of goals scored doesn't mean squat. If you have an effective transition game, and the other team makes mistakes, you can score plenty while playing a trap game.

Never did I say SCSU is a trap team. It was a compliment to Matzko for recognizing a change in style against BSU would be more effective and it paid off.

All that said, my point was that I don't think SCSU plays that conservatively against Minnesota in response to a comment that SCSU has "figured out it's forecheck" playing BSU.

For most of the games I have watched on FSN+ the channel is not in HD (Comcast in Twin Cities). That is probably the knock most people have on it.

Other than Kevin Gorg's painted eyebrows...they do a decent job.

Be easy on Gorg. A few years ago he actually predicted during a broadcast that SCSU would win the National Championship! Guy can't be all bad.

Speaking of FSN, I thought I heard Nicklas Backstrom say during his "Becoming Wild" bio video that he almost came to St. Cloud in 1998 and, if so, would have played with Matt Cullen in college.

Gorg has a bet with my roommate on who wins the WCHA RotY. Gorg of course has Wilcox. Roomie has Kossila.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Looking forward to the weekend match-up. First time in a while that both of these teams are having a series with lots of implications. I certainly hope the students arrive in full force and have the NHeC rocking tomorrow from the start of warm-ups through the final whistle on Saturday night.

It'll be interesting to know how many students show up. I am hopeful that all tickets that were allocated were used. SCSU went to an online system now where students don't have to get up early to go wait in line for a couple hours to ensure tickets. I hope that hasn't caused any apathy, but campus seems to be really buzzing right now with a lot of home sports events this weekend.

Should be a great time to watch on TV or in person.

From what I heard, all the student tickets were gone by noon the day they became available.

I don't like the online thing. You should have to get your tail out of bed at 7am and trudge down to the Hockey Center and get your tickets like your forefathers did. That way you weed out the fair-weather fans who only go to the Gopher series. Darn kids these days with their social networks and Hot Pockets and Moby Grape.

This. I want to be the fan that has to pay $20/ticket for a free student ticket whilst scalping. I want blood and guts and ridicule. This is war! And get off my lawn!

Edit: actually being serious in the above statement.

I wonder how many of these students are Gopher fans who are just at St. Cloud for school.
I am of the opinion that you should support your school over anyone, even if you have been a fan of the opponent before you came here.
You're here now, show the support, or IMO, don't sit with the students if you aren't cheering for your school.
You're only asking for trouble supporting the Gophers from the SCSU student section.

I remember walking around campus back in the day and saw a guy in a Gopher jersey. I had to resist the urge to sock him in the neck.

Why do you think I had trouble trying to scalp a ticket? Honest to God, swear on my mother, the line that worked to get a ticket? "20 bucks. That's beer for the whole night. Cut a guy a break." And they STILL had to think about selling their free tickets.

I have no issue selling a ticket to a Gopher fan. I did have an issue with a fellow St. Cloud student on MY campus wearing someone else's colors. Doesn't matter whose colors...it's uncalled for.
