UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Any ideas on what a good name might be for the MN Tournament?

I kind of like "North Star Cup" or "North Star Challenge Cup." Take us back to some old time hockey roots.

I'd be fine with something North Star, but why not get State of Hockey in there?

But whatever they do, keep the brain trusts that named the NCHC and "Legends and Leaders" away from this one

I can see it already. They'll be playing for the Western National Big Ten Gallon cup.

Beanpot West

It'll probably be named the Brooks Cup or something.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

It would be nice if the Wild could buy that name back from Dallas like Winnipeg bought the rights to the Jets and their jerseys from Phoenix.

I wanted to add that SCSU really made an adjustment to their forecheck that made a big difference against Bemidji State- so maybe they have ironed some of that out (trouble with trapping teams).

Actually thinking back on it, SCSU only had bad periods in Alaska, against NMU (played backup Reijola and Benik had that major penalty on a clean check) and hot goalies RPI (Kasdorf/Diebold) and NMU(Coreau). Otherwise they have been pretty consistent this year.

Minus a period or two against Denver away, New Hampshire away and North Dakota away we've been even or outshot opponents all year.
Whoa whoa whoa!!! Actual hockey talk from the krazy guy?!?!

According to Motzko on his radio show they trapped a lot against BSU instead of aggressively forechecking. You think that will be their approach against the Gophers? I don't see that happening.

I agree. There is no way either team can get away with that in this series. Olympic ice is a different animal, especially with both teams have mobile D-men that move the puck well. If there is not a passing lane they will carry the puck until they open one.

We didn't trap, we sat back and took away the homerun passes Bemidji likes to do, so in essence we didn't forecheck hard.
We will not be playing that way this weekend.
We should be continuing our strong positional defensive play like we have for most of this year.
This will be test for sure, for both teams.

I don't think so either. They will play their style as hard as they can. They are not about to be cute or clever.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Where di he use the word "trap?"

You are right. Motzko refused to say that he used the dirty word "trap." But they did implement a defensive scheme that many might consider a hybrid. Trapping teams do not typically put 30 shots on goal in a game.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Trapping involves a guy up front angling and enticing the offensive player to a line or along the boards where another player(s) is waiting to pick them or check them off the puck. Playing back is more of a man to man scheme which isn't recommended too much in hockey. The BSU d made some long stretch passes that our guys easily anticipated and picked off for odd man chances going the other way. If you want to call that a trap, I guess it is trapping in the sense that the guy passing the puck is blind to the fact that the guy he is passing to is covered.
The Bemidji broadcasters (at least one is a former player) thought it looked like a 1-2-2 but that usually implies the 1 is aggressive but he wasn't, it was a lazy forecheck (probably because a line change was just made and there wasn't any reason to over pursue). The rest just looked that way because that was the offensive formation BSU took.

When talking about THE "trap" it is usually about the 1-3-1 the Wild (under Lemaire), New Jersey and Tampa use(d).

I watched the Friday game and to say that those passes were "easily anticipated" is a gross understatement.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

The Gophers are going to have to try and trap the Hukskies, but wont have much luck. Too much fire power for the Hukskies to be stopped.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

There is such a thing as a passive 1-2-2. Which used to be called a neutral zone trap.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

If you ask Dowd and or Prow I think they would disagree, even I saw them way before they happened- you could see Dowd's licking his chops. And yes you are right it ending up looking like a passive 1-2-2 like the announcer said but was never intended that way and Motzko even said he would retire before he actually intentionally used a trapping system.

I think Dowd did a positionally correct angling to take away the middle, something he did on his own and most good centers learn early gets them a lot of chances up the middle.
Prow is just good at anticipating and jumping up into the play, something I've seen him do since he played HS at Sauk Rapids.
