Travel 4: All Around the World Same Song

I went on land for about an hour, taking pictures of your pretty buildings. I didn't go downtown and I didn't personally contribute anything to the Maine economy. Then I went back on board, got drunk, and watched Back to the Future in a hot tub. It still holds up. Lorraine was hot; Marty should have hit it and never looked back.

Good afternoon from Greenland.

edit it’s really interesting to go from some of the newest rocks to some of the oldest so quickly.

How is it out there? Greenland has been on my wish list for quite a while now, and I'm really curious about what it’s like to explore such a unique destination. I’ve been looking into travel options and even checked bc ferries reservations, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like they offer trips to Greenland. It’s a bit disappointing, but I’m determined to find another way to get there. I’ve heard the landscapes are breathtaking, with stunning glaciers and incredible wildlife.

Some help needed please!

despite living in Europe multiple times, I’ve only been back once in the last decade

I’m going to Strasbourg, France next month to meet up with family. Gonna be quick- like a 5-6 day trip. I have like 300k points on chase to use for travel so I will likely do that since I’m unemployed and well, those points won’t increase in value.

I have a lot of options. Want a big airport not direct into strasbourg. I could fly into Frankfurt (leading candidate) or Munich, Zurich, or Paris I guess.

I can book united, American, British air, aer lingus, Iceland, Lufthansa.

I still have a family member very high up at delta so I was gonna ask him his thoughts…but given the trip is so short I want to minimize getting stuck in connections as much as I can.

Lufthansa now offers direct from MSP to FRA although Lufthansa customer service has been abysmal the past few years.

Id recommend that and then a train down to Strasbourg. You can also book the train at the same time as your flight via LH.

The benefit to flying an EU based airline is that you're eligible for compensation on both legs of the journey in case of delays, whereas it's only on the return for non-eu.

A short visit with family in DC, and we took a few hours to hike a little at Great Falls. Nice and very interesting walk.

Ive settled on my route after my delta fam member advised me. Which I’m grateful for- I was debating delta via dtw or klm via ams. His first question on Detroit was “is it a330 or 767-400? Because Detroit only has one 767 and if it has an issue, you’re kaput. If it was the airbus they have backups.

so I’m flying Amsterdam to Munich. Worst case things go south in Amsterdam I just hop on a train to strasbourg. I’ve never explored Munich so here we go

if you want a great meal, go to the end of the S Bahn to seefeld and find the Gasthof Hotel Zur Post. God they had good food.

It’s gonna be a tight trip. Land Saturday am Munich, have the day. Sunday morning take train to Strasberg, hang there with family Sunday night and Monday, Tuesday am either to Freiburg, Baden Baden or more likely, back to Munich. Then I leave Thursday am.

I’d love ti stay longer, but my parents are watching my dog, I’ve barely left her since Covid and with her brother recently passing I didn’t want my first trip to be over a week.

us childless pet ladies care about those pets!

my family is from southwest Germany, my cousins have always spent time in southern Germany in all the cute little Bavarian towns, where as I lived in the cold, hard, not cute north of Berlin with its Soviet remnants . It’s gonna be a new experience for me

Here’s the best part: one of my cousins is a chef who was Eric Riperts sous for over a decade at le bernadin before breaking out on his own. He now lives and cooks in Lyon. So I’m going to have a Michelin chef picking out our restaurants

I had to make a last-minute trip to the Pittsburgh area. Two of my brothers and I made the trip by driving because flights were stupid expensive, and I kind of think my brothers aren’t big fans of flying. Regardless, 14.5 hours there (“we should avoid the tolls!”), and then 13 hours back (F your toll avoidance arse!). We left 7:30PM Saturday, arriving in the Pitt area at 11:00 am ET Sunday. We then left at 3:00pm ET on Monday and arrived back home at 3:00am CT Tuesday.

A few takeaways from the roadtrip - Ohio’s turnpikes are pretty nice. The roads are really well maintained, and the rest stops are great. Indiana simply sucks. Illinois’s road construction speed limit changes are confusing, and driving through Chicago is a forking nightmare, and that was before we came up on a stalled vehicle in the far left lane. Given how many FIBs were on the road at the time (around 9:00pm), I was fully expecting some jackwagon to come flying up at 90mph to cause a huge chain reaction crash. Still, Indiana’s highways are worse.

Also, I think our time actually in the Pittsburgh area was split about 1/3 sleeping, 1/3 with family, and the other third watching my one brother trying to to hunt down some Reymer’s Lemon Blennd.

That sounds like quite the adventure! I can relate to long road trips, especially with avoiding tolls—sometimes it's just not worth the extra miles and time. I had a similar experience on a trip where we tried to bypass tolls and ended up in endless roadwork, which definitely made things worse! I haven't been through Ohio's turnpikes, but it's good to know they’re well-maintained. On my last drive through Pennsylvania, I had to battle some intense fog in the mountains, which was a nightmare. As for Chicago, I completely agree—it’s chaotic. And Indiana... well, let’s just say I’ll avoid that drive if I can! By the way, if you're planning another trip, you might want to check out travelup for booking. They offer good deals on hotels, flights, and car rentals, which can save you some hassle on long trips like that. Just be sure to read through reviews to know what to expect!

I highly, highly recommend traveling with a professional chef who spent more than a decade cooking in a Michelin restaurant. He’s found us the best places to eat in France, despite my inability to eat much.

cheaper than a night out in the US and ten times the quality in every meal, just a delight.

Shout out to deutsche bahn today stranding 75+ in stuttgart today, our train was 20 mins late and our connecting train literally pulled away as we all ran up, and had to wait 40 mins for another one

on a sad note, the border police are about to start checking passports at borders again- I don’t believe this has been done in years but given what is going on right now, I’m surprised they haven’t done it already

They're ramping it up since early this summer. I haven't been checked on my trains back from Amsterdam or Innsbruck, but they've put out a few press releases on how many people they've caught.

Generally, it's trains coming from Czechia and Poland, but they've normally checked those the past few years.

When I lived in SW Germany, I'd get checked every time I came back from Strasbourg, but that was always an 11pm train.

On our private balcony in Viejo San Juan. Puffing on a Macanudo. It's 85 degrees. Life does not suck.

I’m genuinely jealous. I’d like to return there sometime when I’m not hampered by a 4yo and two septuagenarians who simply cannot handle walking the hills.
